:D That's awesome that it connected with you so much! I'm really glad for you! What did you think of the Freddie live versions from Montreal and On Fire? So much energy overall! That is one thing I will definitely give Adam's version...it was damn energetic as well! I got carried away with Adam's version there I forgot to mention FM's performances. LOVE, LOVE and addicted to the intro's in both versions and wished it was done in one of the QAL's but as you said Queen hardly break away from their routines. I LOVE the '81 Montreal performance! It is in my DVR and after that QAL I went back to replay it. I used to have the whole concert on before and really just took STL for granted until AL visually introduced what this song is all about. IMO NOBODY can compare to FM's delivery. He owned this song and so much in control of what he can so vocally, artistically and performance-wise. Yes, the energy was second to none!

I've always loved how prominent the bass section of the Queen choir is on this song 8-)

STL; I think Freddie's performances at The Bowl and Montreal were phenomenal.
This was the song that never quite reached the mark for me with QAL. I think it was the only song that he consistently had pitch problems with and I would get ready to cringe each time Adam would get near the high wails at 1.40 and 3.18 on the 7/14 video you posted. The one at 1.40 sounded okay to me but 3.18 hurt. Talon, has any other singer attempted those wails live? It must be very hard to hit the correct note spot on.
I loved the first part of the song up to 1.40.

When you talk Queen vocals it is usually about the high notes that Roger and Freddie are fighting for but Freddie's low register adds such a richness to it! I loved the first part of the song up to 1.40. Glad to see I'm not alone. Yeah that's what I meant basically. I was so looking forward to Adam singing it so it was a bit disappointing overall. Not that it wasn't enjoyable, it just wasn't quite as mindblowing as I had been hoping for! Movies about Freddie/Queen on TV this week: Freddie Mercury: The Great Pretender ( New) - Biography channel 9/30/2012 I just got this on blu-ray. This is PHENOMENAL. Especially for hard core Queen fans. Rhys Thomas found so much unseen footage. About 85% of the footage Queen fans hadn't seen. It concentrates mainly on Freddie's solo era and has some interesting discussion points. All in all it is a very nice endeavor. For the record this is my favorite bio of the band. EXTREMELY well done . I believe the TV one is shortened. The Blu-Ray/DVD is phenomenal and well worth the purchase. These are decent, but not quite as good as the first two but thanks for the heads up..I will have to get the DVR going...

White Man
Written by: Brian May
Musicians: Freddie Mercury - lead and backing vocals Brian May - guitars, backing vocals John Deacon - bass guitar Roger Taylor - drums, backing vocals
- Originally titled Simple Man - A very politically charged song, something Queen really hadn't done up to that point. They would start writing more in that direction (Roger especially) although Freddie never really did. He was always about love and relationships. -Played live usually in a medley with The Prophets Song through 1978 and then dropped. - THe B-Side to Somebody To Love
QUOTES:
- "White Man is the B-side. It’s Brian’s song, a very bluesy track. Gave me the opportunity to do some raucous vocals. I think it’ll be a great stage number.” – Freddie Mercury – Circus - 1977
- Kenny Everett: "Cor! How did you manage to get such a loud noise on one record?" Freddie Mercury: "I don't know, it's down to Mike Stone, our engineer. We're very bad in the studio for that actually, the poor engineer has to really suffer because we really want as much level as possible. We keep pushing the phasers up and he keeps looking at the meters and going, 'Oh it'll never cut.' Then we give him the added task of going over to New York or wherever and saying, 'Make sure that cuts as loud as possible.'"
UNRELEASED LIVE PERFORMANCE
LIVE IN HOUSTON
- It cuts off a little abruptly as it's about to go into The Prophets Song
PERSONAL NOTES: - I love the heaviness of this track. Queen could rock as hard as any of the heavy metal bands when they wanted to. The fact that they did it less to me made those heavier songs just pound. I also love that last line. Just an amazing sentiment. A man who learned how to teach, then forgot how to learn...
Next up is Good Old-Fashioned Loverboy which is a nice whimsical song with Freddie doing some ragtime on the piano.

What a cool song, kind of out of place since it's so angry and heavy and the rest of the album is just lovely. Wonder if it inspired Iron Maiden's Run to the Hills.
Good Old-Fashioned Lover Boy is like my favourite Queen song :D

That's an interesting suggestion...NG I love that you keep making these references that I haven't thought of that are so spot on with regards to other artists in comparison! It wouldn't surprise me at all given that Bruce Dickinson was a big Queen fan. In fact Bruce has sang a few Queen songs and even recorded a cover of Bohemian Rhapsody with Spanish Opera Diva Montserrat Caballe (who Freddie did his Barcelona album with) And I agree about it being a bit out of place in terms...especially as it segues into Good Old Fashioned! What a contrast!

I just finished watching Freddie Mercury: The Great Pretender. That was quite overwhelming especially the 2nd half. "My life is in my songs" quote from Freddie did me in. My heart goes out to him when he said that the rest of the band did not share the same interest he had outside of their creating music together. They did feature STL and again I was crying watching this performance because I fully understood what he is singing about (again, I thank Adam for this because STL used to be one Queen song I used to skip or FF until QAL, esp. Kiev). I know you will discuss this later but it was new to me that he did another solo project after they got together. Powerful performances from both him and Montserrat Caballe. I really thought Queen was involved with this project, including The Great Pretender (per FM, Queen does not record cover just Queen music) so he went on his own. Glad to see I'm not alone. Yeah that's what I meant basically. I was so looking forward to Adam singing it so it was a bit disappointing overall. Not that it wasn't enjoyable, it just wasn't quite as mindblowing as I had been hoping for! Just for the record, just because I was rejoicing in AL's performance of STL especially in Kiev it doesn't mean I am blind to the flaws of that performance However I prefer to accentuate the impact of that performance to me as a new Queen fan. No expectation other than a un-Freddie-like performance. He opened my eyes to the brilliance of Queen's music by his own performance, flaws or not... And because of you, we even get deeper into Queen's music whether the song/album became a hit or not and know more about each individual in the process. We got lucky to have you and can't thank you enough, Talon. BTW, do you have a thread like this in the Queen Forum? Or... are all the members there know everything about Queen so there's no need to have it? I was wondering how the followers of Kerry, QE, WWRY, etc. get to know more about Queen because of their association with the group. Now I have to go back to sleep. Adam's journey in China kept me awake all night.
