I just finished watching Freddie Mercury: The Great Pretender. That was quite overwhelming especially the 2nd half. "My life is in my songs" quote from Freddie did me in. My heart goes out to him when he said that the rest of the band did not share the same interest he had outside of their creating music together. They did feature STL and again I was crying watching this performance because I fully understood what he is singing about (again, I thank Adam for this because STL used to be one Queen song I used to skip or FF until QAL, esp. Kiev). Absolutely. I loved the humor in the bio. It was quite uplifting for the most part. Of course there is the inevitable sadness but it is quite powerful. Yeah Queen really never did record covers. Queen + Paul Rodgers recorded one but it was only used as an iTunes bonus. Funny enough both Freddie and Brian had ideas to do a cover album and both changed their minds. Brian had his ideas about 10 years after Freddie did! Oh I didn't mean to say you didn't. And I'm glad he did it so you love the song now! I do not. For the most part the regulars there would know about 95% of the things I mention...and there are probably one or two over there who know more than I do even! As far as other groupings of fans...I have never really visited another fandom very often. QE and WWRY fans are on the Queen board generally and I don't think Kerry has a very active internet community. She does have a ton of fans but it's not a rabid online presence. Goodnight! :D See you tomorrow!

Thanks again for these priceless Queen lessons!!
I wonder if there would be some way to index the songs you've talked about. Maybe even just a list on the first page, even if it didn't reference which page to find songs, but we could find them chronologically. I have had to skip around and find myself thinking," I wonder if Talon covered__yet?" Or, "where was it he talked about__?"
I hate to ask you to do more work than you already have. If it is a pain then forget it.

I am the SECOND post in this thread...I could just modify that post now to be an index of sorts and continually modify it as I go. Let me see what I can do - it's a great idea! I got a seoulmate gif! ;D That makes all my work worth it

Good Old-Fashioned Lover Boy
Written by: Freddie Mercury
Freddie Mercury - lead and backing vocals, piano Brian May - guitars, backing vocals John Deacon - bass guitar Roger Taylor - drums, triangle, woodblocks, backing vocals Mike Stone - additional vocals
- Issued kind of as a single. It was the lead track on what was called Queen's First EP which collected a song from Queen II (White Queen), Sheer Heart Attack (Tenement Funster), A Night At The Opera (Death On Two Legs) and this song in the UK where it hit #17 on the charts.
- Mike Stone, who you may remember was the sound engineer who assisted Queen produce this album and the next one, is the one singing the line:
Before I found out, I thought it was Brian and then Roger from the video when Rog mimes it.
- This is really the last of the Freddie vaudeville type songs unfortunately. I wish he continued this tradition!
- Played live as part of the medley through 1978 or so. Hillariously Freddie could rarely remember all the lyrics so he would throw in a few ram pam pams in replacing lines here and there.
QUOTES:
- “[It’s] one of my vaudeville numbers. I always do a vaudeville track though Lover Boy’ is more straightforward than Seaside Rendezvous for instance. It’s quite simple, piano and vocals with a catchy beat; the album needs it to sort of ease off.” – Freddie Mercury
- Freddie Mercury: "It’s called Good Old-Fashioned Lover Boy, and it’s in my ‘ragtime’ mood that I get a chance to, [Laughs] to do on every album and this time, this is something I’ve come up with this time around." Kenny Everett: "Right, a little frilly number from the pen of Fred."
ALTERNATIVE RELEASED VERSION:
TOP OF THE POPS VERSION
- ESSENTIAL listening - The band rerecorded a version to mime on Top Of The Pops. This version is slightly more up tempo at times, more live sounding. The Mike Stone part is taken on by Roger.
UNRELEASED LIVE VERSION:
LIVE AT EARLS COURT - 1977
- I couldn't find a decent quality standalone so this is Killer Queen into Lover Boy. - And yes - it has a few ram pam pams in it :D
PERSONAL NOTES:
- This one took a little bit to grow on me but it did and now I love it. Dancy fun, and flirty with some great harmonies and background vocals.
Next up is Rog's contribution to the album, Drowse

Good afternoon, talon, the intrepid cornucopia of all things Queen. You really are a treasure on this forum. Just dropping a note to mention that the Guitar World Greatest Guitarist of All Time has Brian up against Jimmy Page today for a spot in the final 4. Brian's way behind (about 75% to 25%), and the Queen online forum doesn't have a link to the poll up today. If you have any insite there, maybe you could drop a word to the webmistress? www.guitarworld.com/poll-greatest-guitarist-all-time-round-5-jimmy-page-vs-brian-may

Any suggestions or incorrect links, let me know and I'll change it up :D OK, you're gonna kill me when you read this suggestion, but could you put in page numbers in the index so we can find things fast? Like Queen II p.9 Sheer Heart Attack p.15 This is a time-consuming bitch of a job, so maybe we could all help? ;D OK... adding a few page numbers!! White Queen p.10 Stone Cold Crazy p.20 Bring Back that Leroy Brown p.21 She Makes me p.21 A Night at the Opera p.25 I'm in Love with my Car p.26 You're my best friend p.26 '39 p.27 Sweet Lady p.27 The Prophet's Song p. 28 :2tears: Love of my Life p.28

Ohhh crazy! I checked out the alternate TOTP version since you put it as essential listening and this is my favourite Queen song... this is the version I've always known, my family have always played, I've always heard on the radio... Day at the Races version is new to me
