Today it's a TWO-FER. I figure it's a single with a B-Side so let's just take care of both in one as there are very few alternative versions...
SIDE A:
I Wanna Testify
Written by: George Clinton/Daron Taylor/Roger Taylor
Musicians:
Roger Taylor - all instruments and vocals
- Roger is the first band member to try his hand out on a solo effort and it is by the truest definition a solo project. Roger plays every instrument on the single and does all the vocals himself.
- This is actually a kind of cover but more of a reimagining. It is based on Parliament's song of the same name here:
which is why the writing credits are shared by George Clinton and Daron Taylor. But the song *is* VERY much rearranged by Roger who also added quite different lyrics.
PERSONAL NOTES:
- Issued as a single but it did not chart.
- It seems like something Roger probably wanted to do for awhile as the band never put something on the album that had outside writing credit. There are only four exceptions in the bands history. Also Freddie and Brian had the most songs per album while Roger only got one or two. He needed an outlet since he was so creative. It made sense that he would be the first to attempt something away from the band.
- This was never intended to be anything more than a sidebar. He never had any intention of leaving the band.
- Very different than most Queen sounds of the day but it is a funky stomper. I love singing along to it.
SIDE B:
Turn On The TV
Written by: Roger Taylor
Musicians:
Roger Taylor - all instruments and vocals
- The B-Side of I Wanna Testify this is even a truer Roger solo effort given it was solely written and performed by the man.
- A very Zeppelinish feel to the song especially the acoustic sections. Far different sounds than Queen
PERSONAL NOTES:
- It's a song I don't seek out often but I wouldn't skip it if it came up in my iPod either. Some nice harmony vocals and the acoustic breakdowns are quite nice sounding.
UNRELEASED FROM THIS SESSION:
Sheer Heart Attack (Demo)
Fight From The Inside (Demo)
- Both ended up on the next Queen album, News Of The World
Next up? A new album - News Of The World followed up by what I guarantee will be the longest post of the thread with a TON of alternative versions. The song probably most associated with the band...We Will Rock You...
SIDE A:
I Wanna Testify

We met each other introduced by her brother
A cat I'd known all my life
Parties and dancing,moonlight and romancing
Soon to be husband and wife
My friends call me crazy, her folks call her lazy
But our love counts for life
If we stuck together the pressures we would weather
Not knowing we were in for a fall
Women and drinking Loving and thinking
They do it to you every time
Women and drinking Loving and thinking
They do it to you every time
Find yourself going down down down down
I'm going down down
I'm going down down down down down down down
Ow, I just wanna testify
What the women don't owe to me
I just wanna testify
What the women don't owe to me
We had a boy
My pride and joy
I took a job day and night
Tired and wired
One day I got fired
That's when we started to fight
With time on his hands
A man ain't a man
And all he loves he starts to neglect
I didn't go far
Straight to the bar
And drank up all my self respect
Women and drinking Loving and thinking
They do it to you every time
Women and drinking Loving and thinking
They do it to you every time
Find yourself going down down down down
I'm going down down
I'm going down down down down down down down
Ow, I just wanna testify
What the women don't owe to me
I just wanna testify
What the women don't owe to me
Yeah, let me get on back to my story now
Yeah, about no-one
But my wife and my son
That's when I started to roam
Bar room to them
It happened so soon
I found myself on my own
She went back to her mother
I fought with her brother, yeah
And in my heart I know I was wrong
Please pay attention to the words that I mention, yeah
And listen to the moral of the song
I just I just wanna testify
A cat I'd known all my life
Parties and dancing,moonlight and romancing
Soon to be husband and wife
My friends call me crazy, her folks call her lazy

Ahhh
Oh
Collect your senses and your wits
And what you've left on your mind
All the so called modern caring virtues
Are likely to change, you'll find
So let's turn on the TV, wake up
You know what - that sounds better it's all for free
Turn on the TV as it takes a horizontal hold
On your energy
Just gotta get, gotta get, gotta go, gotta get up out of here
Gotta get, gotta get, gotta go, gotta get up out of here
Go to the place over the hill
Where the grass is greener
Where the life is sweeter
And all the time we know
That it never is, that it never is
That it never is, that it never is
And it's very likely that we never will
Turn on the TV - find myself a-talking to
One of those quadraphonic pioneers
Turn on the TV - he said give up that stereo
Boy I said I've only got two ears
Turn on the TV - things ain't so black and white
When grey is the color of my best friend's sweater
Turn on the TV - and relay some greatest circulated idea, yeah
Just gotta get, gotta get, gotta go, gotta get up out of here
Gotta get, gotta get, gotta go, gotta get up out of here
Go to the place over the hill
Where the grass is greener
Where the life is sweeter
