All Dead, All Dead
Pleasantly surprised. This is such a beautiful song....and Brian playing the piano. Yes, this song perfectly fits BM's voice.

I love how Freddie and Brian's voices blend so well on the duet portion...

Spread Your Wings
Written by: John Deacon
Musicians:
Freddie Mercury - lead vocals, piano Brian May - guitars John Deacon - bass guitar, acoustic guitar Roger Taylor - drums
- Issued as a single in the UK (where it hit #34), Belgium, France, Germany, The Netherlands (where it hit #20), and Spain.
- Played live through 1979 and then surprisingly and unfortunately dropped - Freddie would often throw some innuendo out to the crowd introducing the song as Spread Your Legs.
- It was around the shooting of this video (and We Will Rock You) that the band parted ways with John Reid and went on to managing themselves (with help from Jim Beach). There was no acrimony and the band are still friends with Reid, they just felt that Elton John took too much time from John and that they could manage themselves at this point.
- Axl Rose has cited this as a song that meant a lot to him while growing up and helped inspire him to become a musician.
ALTERNATIVE RELEASED VESRIONS:
BBC SESSION #6 VERSION
- ESSENTIAL listening. - This version is similar to the original except it has an awesome rocking out upbeat ending where Roger goes into to double time and it is pure energy. I wish this was the released version and that they played it live like this all the time.
SINGLE EDIT
- NOT essential listening, just a different fade point.
DVD EDIT
- NOT essential listening, just a different fade point. - This IS the video though so that is interesting - yes it's from the same shoot as We Will Rock You which was a single in the US but not the UK while Spread Your Wings was the opposite - probably why they though they could get away with it...
UNRELEASED AND UNHEARD
TRENT REZNOR REMIX - Considering how interesting his other two mixes are, I'd be very interested to hear this one...
OFFICIALLY RELEASED LIVE VERSIONS:
LIVE KILLERS VERSIONS
- AUDIO only.
UNRELEASED LIVE VERSION
LIVE IN PARIS 1979
- I love this version - well done and one of the only videos of the song in existence.
PERSONAL NOTES: - A hard song to sing, as it stays up in the range, but fun. If I had to pick one this would be my favorite John Deacon tune. LOVE the uptempo bit. This is one of those potential songs for QAL if they continue.
Next up is a very unique song in Queen history and one that is relevant today...(I love trying to leave little intriguing notions here)...Fight From The Inside

Spread Your Wings
Wow! Never heard this song before but this is just awesome ... so inspirational... and Freddie's vocals... what can I say? I love the BBC version. IMO, John's best composition (for now, since we haven'e explored all JD's songs yet). I would love to hear Adam's version of this.

This is a great song. Heard it a few years back and wondered why I never heard it on the radio alongside all the other big hits. I feel the same about It's A Hard Life.

Oh me too....in the US especially on Hard Life. Spread Your Wings has all the makings of a big hit but for whatever reason it never quite made it...It was never even a single here!

Fight From The Inside
Written by: Roger Taylor
Musicians:
Roger Taylor - lead and backing vocals, drums, rhythm guitar, bass guitar Brian May - guitars
- Intriguing? Well yeah because it is the first Queen song...that is just Brian and Roger. Practically a Roger solo song as he does every instrument - Brian just adds some lead guitar.
- In a funny case of irony, Slash from Guns 'N Roses was praising Brian May and then cited this song as one of his favorite guitar riffs of all time...Only it's Roger's riff and performance on the guitar!
ALTERNATIVE RELEASED VERSIONS:
THE EYE INSTRUMENTAL MIX
- NOT essential but interesting none the less. - In the late 90s Queen developed a computer video game based on their music called The Eye. I never really did get a chance to play it but it was not that great a game supposedly BUT the soundtrack was QUITE unique. It was chuck full (5 discs) of instrumental remixes. Considering I was reaching for any alternative I could find for this song, I figured it was worth a shot.
PERSONAL NOTES: - Very gruff, and I find it more interesting today - The band COULD do an album with just Roger and Brian and it has precedence! Up next is Freddie's sensual funk rocker - Get Down, Make Love

Fight From The Inside
All right! Roger and Brian rocking it all out :D Agree that they should had a rock album together.
ETA: So let's say years later RT and BM did a Queen album together (after FM passed away) without John, would the Queen fans be OK if they still call it Queen (production)?
Another topic... I remember in that Freddie's GP documentary JB said that when he had one of Freddie's song remixed into a dance song (?) he received over 100 angry letters from FM's fans "How dare he" touch FM's song? Since he didn't mention anymore attempt to do more than one, was that just one song? Sorry, I can't remember which song it was.

ETA: So let's say years later RT and BM did a Queen album together (after FM passed away) without John, would the Queen fans be OK if they still call it Queen (production)? That's a great question. I can't be certain but if I read the fanbase right, they'd certainly be far MORE ok with it than with any other singer. To try and attribute some non-descript percentage of fans who would accept it, in my mind it is something like this. Queen album with Freddie/Brian/Roger/John - 100% fanbase acceptance Queen album with Brian/Roger/John - 75- 85% fanbase acceptance Queen album with Brian/Roger - 50-65% fanbase acceptance Queen album with Brian/Roger + PR type - 40-50% fanbase acceptance Queen album with Brian/Roger + AL - 25-35% fanbase acceptance Queen album with Brian/Roger + Marc Martel - 25 - 35 % fanbase accpetance (but different than AL grouping ) I know a followup question would be why would PR be 40-50% while AL down lower? Legacy is the answer. The fanbase as a whole consider Paul Rodgers to be more on Queen's level with a history of his own (Free, Bad Company, The Firm), and his own songwriting/hits, and closer to the same genre than Adam who is doing far more dance/pop type stuff. I personally am a little more forgiving. While I still believe that in truth only a Freddie/Brian/Roger/John album can be a Queen album, I would certainly be accepting of a Brian/Roger album as the next best thing. After that it's not really Queen but I don't worry about titles. I just know it's 2 of my favorite musicians and whomever they choose to work with is really irrelevant to me - yes some are better than others. And honestly I enjoy the PR tours/album and the AL tour equally for different reasons. To me it's difficult to compare the two as they brought different things out of the Brian/Roger Queen mix. If I had to choose at this moment, I'd choose AL as I think we could get more of the old catalogue out with AL...and PR had a good run of 2 major tours/albums so AL is a newer and fresher approach. I love Marc Martel - but I don't think they should do anything with him in general as it would be too much trying to replace Freddie no matter what they would say...Perhaps for a Freddie For A Day function where the goal was to dress like Freddie, etc...it might work. With that being said, I'm a bit of a stepford and would absolutely go see Queen + Marc Martel. BUT I wouldn't be as thrilled about the collaboration. After Freddie died, Jim had Living On My Own remixed for radio and it was a huge hit. But it was not the only one. There was an album in the UK called The Freddie Mercury Album and it's related (not exactly the same) counterpart in the US The Great Pretender that was chock full of remixes of Freddie's solo songs. I actually remember that wheN I was getting into Queen that was one of the first solo efforts I got and I was unaware that they were remixes. So when I delved back further and heard the originals I was confused. Looking back now as the legacy, it is easy to see that it was a cash-in BUT and maybe this is blasphemy and maybe because it was how I was introduced to the songs, I enjoy some of the remixes at least as much as the originals. But Freddie's solo life is certainly an interesting journey. Which leads me to an interesting point, I'm actually getting closer to the point in our little educational journey to decide how I want to handle the compilations and live albums. I mean I've already been detailing the official live albums and any remixes/different versions from compilations with the original songs...but I don't know if I feel right skipping them entirely. Perhaps, I shall just notate when a compilation was released so you have an idea of what is/was out there and why it was released, etc.
