Touching again on the interview with Justin Tranter posted earlier. www.newnownext.com/singer-songwriter-justin-tranter-talks-about-the-queer-meaning-behind-selena-gomezs-good-for-you/12/2015/ It seems this might be a really good time for them to work together. He's a hot song-writer. But the thing that struck me from the interview is his worry for outliers in the gay community from the "too femme" and the black transgendered and the physical or emotional bullying they receive in and out of the LGBTQ community. I see this as an area that Adam agrees with and you can see it as part of his Instagram posting which I see as less of a defiant "this is who I am" and more of a "I take my soapbox seriously but I can have fun while doing it". And CrazzyforAdam brought up looking at musical genres and her link led me to this link called "Every Noise at Once". If you ever want to hear where a traditional dubstep lands compared to greekhouse or polishpunk this is the place. Can you imagine Adam visiting it and going - yah, that's the beat I want. You can look up Adam too and see what genres' his singles fall into. everynoise.com/engenremap.htmlHere's a description of the project - This is an ongoing attempt at an algorithmically-generated, readability-adjusted scatter-plot of the musical genre-space, based on data tracked and analyzed for 1498 genres by Spotify. The calibration is fuzzy, but in general down is more organic, up is more mechanical and electric; left is denser and more atmospheric, right is spikier and bouncier.

That plot makes my head hurt -- but does prove a couple things to me -- music is complex and "genre" has become pretty meaningless. 1,498 genres!! ETA: Adam Lambert on the everynoise chart = pop, idol, dance pop, post-teen pop, viral pop. Well that is a pretty ridic list of genres for Adam.

Adam Lambert is a genre! Haha. Adam Lambert is basically one big song. Adam did say genres are passé. And it's now pop fusion . Guess it helps when you can pretty much do every genre.

From Nica
Every time during the "Adam's charting" discussion the idea of "he needs a great song" gets mentioned and every time I see it I think "but what does this mean?"... Are the top charting songs "great"? By what criteria? What makes them great aside from the fact they've charted high?
---------- Valid question. But I think good quality and very popular are two different dimensions. Every once in a while a song comes along that unifies them both, and those are the really GREAT songs that you will hear for years to come, and not just when they are hits. But usually quality and popularity are somewhat different things. Adam had some songs of high quality, but I don't think he had many of mass appeal and no that is not all radio's fault. It is not easy to capture that special thing that will have mass appeal and staying power.
But I think it is wrong to say that anything that is popular is automatically primitive or cannot be of value. Queen, just to name them as example, has proven again and again that hits connect with something essentially human, and do not all have to be intellectual master works. Some work on a very instinctual level, WWRY being the prime example that comes to mind. That beat was brilliant and stands the test of time. The best rhythmic element that Adam has had so far imo is the base intro in Shady. But a) the brilliant base beat is unfortunately pulled back right after the intro and b), the song probably was a tad too shady lyrically to be mainstream. Is the situation more sensitive because Adam writes this as a gay man? Probably. But a song can have only so many strikes against it and still make it with Mr. Mass Public, no matter how great the tune. Other songs had other issues (being to quirky, being released at wrong time, etc).
Adam had many quality songs, the list of songs that could attract a mass audience were not quite so many, imo. Given that i doubt that Adam can succeed with a sub-par song, he will have to wait for lightening in a bottle and he just needs to keep working with top people, eventually things will come together just right. But I don't think that quality will have to be sacrificed in the process. In fact, I think that Adam will shine the most exactly with a high quality song, like a really good ballad, or funky dance track, not some simple pop tune that has a good hook, but nothing else.

I really don't think radio spends a lot of time deciding how good a song is before they play it. Their favorites will get everything they release played over and over again and it is not all good tho some is. Adam is not on that list. I don't think they have ever looked at Adam's music and decided it was not as good as the others so we will pass either. He gets 3x platinum and 2x platinum and platinum in the countries where the same song he put out here is played. They just play it more. When WWFM was being certified in the US and many other countries the UK passed so it did nothing there. That elusive great song requirement (for massive play) seems to be only an excuse when it comes to Adam. I don't know how those radio deals are made but Adam has never had one. Maybe it is money like 3ku1 said a day or so ago. Whatever it is I hope he will get it this time. Because his music is just as good or better than the other music that is played, imo. If you don't get a lot of play here you will not get award show nominations or performance slots here. Having said that, Adam has a wonderful career and he is a star. Not one of the biggest in the world but that is okay. He is successful and his achievements are many and diverse.

You forgot about Nick Jonas as another solo male artist making the charts. I can't believe this guy has more commercial success than Adam. I saw him singing live on Ellen and then again on the Frank Sinatra tribute, and shook my head in disbelief. And don't tell me it's because he's good-looking, because no one is better-looking than Adam. It makes no sense to me at all.
