Nobody knows who somebody else is inside, true for anybody, and especially true for somebody who is far removed from us and very different from us.
The extra wrinkle with an artist or any famous person, for that matter, is that there is the extra layer of that public image, whatever that is, because obviously, we each have our own perspective or perception about any public figure.
Besides figuring himself out, Adam has the task to shape this 'image' thing to the extent that he can influence it. The rest of that image is created by the media and by the public itself, and is therefore not that much under his control. That must be especially frustrating, in case he thinks that image is off, meaning very different than his wish what it should be. I don't know whether he feels that way, I am just saying, that it must be tough for a famous person to deal with that image, like constantly looking into a distorted mirror of sorts.
With every album or every major media cycle Adam gets a chance to influence this image, shape the discussion for the next round of interviews. He makes those choices, but what the result of his choices is going to be, that is again not very much in his control.
The whole male - female topic is not so much an issue because of Adam himself, he seems quite comfortable in his skin from what I can tell. The issue is more, that this male-female topic tends to have two inherent challenges.
a) it tends to take over. i.e. that is all people want to talk about, whether it is media or fans or whoever. Remember his tweet: 'gay, gay, yay, yay (about his interview with Bravo in Germany). He could not get a word in about his music, his ideas, what the album was about, anything...it was all about the gay topic, and often sensationalist and reduced to such visual elements like guy liner on top of it. That is the first issue with this topic.
and second...
b) It is divisive, as people tend to have strong feelings and not all are positive, even within his fanbase. His fans tend to be concerned, rather than antagonistic, of course. They may be concerned that he is pigeon-holed, or pushed into a corner far from mainstream, or less successful, or misunderstood, etc. They carry with them all their own experiences from their own lives, or from talking with others about Adam, or from what we read in the media. Because we all know that there is a cruel world out there. And it is going to show itself, if Madam Lambert is here to stay.
Adam is now on round 4 of this, 8 years in, he knows every bit of this. He needs to do what he thinks is the right next step in molding this 'image'. And we need to be ready to support him. That's our job. What behind all this the true Adam thinks, who knows. I have no idea what he thinks, whether he is afraid, or brave, or both, whether he feels driven to steer things a certain way, or wether it is just some idea, etc. But what I do anticipate is that he is clearly getting ready to do things a bit differently, and 'Madam Lambert' is going to be around for more than just one BBC interview, imo.
For those of you who were around during FYE, do you remember the Scarlet Letter 'A' on the back of his cape/coat?
'Madam Lambert" is imo the adamized version of exactly that, a symbol/name placed by others with the intent to shame, that is seen by society as something degrading or bad or sinful, and that is then owned and turned around by the person to become a sign of strength and pride instead.
We shall see what will happen, both with QAL and then with A4.
