It's interesting to me that Sam Smith ,from England ,has not faced the bigotry here in the states, that our own folks face. It hurts to think that so many talented American
LGBTQ performers cannot break into music or the movies.. It's so time to end this bias.I watch ITunes a lot to see how gay singers do.. They appear for a short while and
then seem to disappear pretty quickly..Don't see many if any at the TV music award shows .. Maybe because how many ever win.
This is talent that we don't really get to hear and to support IMHO, It's America's loss
ADA on AI ,the talk has a great deal to do with her persona, but of course She's a willing unicorn . and yes I sure hope she wins..A rare talent.
To add, I also blame the LGBTQ Community for not supporting their own artists.....their support is so needed..

With Sam, his label went all out for him in the beginning. He was on SNL and he got that coveted radio deal. He was already doing very well in the UK, as a featured artist and riding high on the US charts. All before he came out tho so that may have made some difference. When he did, the press nor his fans ever made a big deal about his sexuality. It was acknowledged and noted but no one expected him to talk about or explain being gay 24/7. It was more about his music and talent. And I agree, that coming from another country seems to make the path easier. Ada, Jurnee (my favorite) and Gabby (the county artist) are clear favorites of the judges. But they got this far as the judges and or producers picks. We don't know yet how the public vote will go for them. Unlike in the past with Adam and others, by the time you got to top 14, the audience was either in your corner and voting you thru or not. They will cut 4 and make it top 10 after the first public vote so I hope they survive. I think they will.

I just wanted to share a nice story. My boyfriend and I are baseball fans and sometimes at games we get to see a live proposal. Well, at the last game that we went to there was yet another live proposal but this one was different from all of the previous ones that I had seen because instead of Jack proposing to Jill, Susan proposed to Carol. It was just like all of the other proposals because Susan got down on one knee and offered an engagement ring in a box to Carol who accepted the ring and then it ended with them kissing while we all watched on the jumbotron enormous screen. I did my usual screaming, applauding and clapping and I was joined by other members of the crowd also cheering on the newly engaged couple. I did wonder, however, if two guys kissing would have been as totally accepted as two women were. I certainly hope so and look forward to more happy couples of any gender sharing their love at a baseball game.

msloyalfan my apologies for coming up with my favorite tv-show...I love your story, but Susan and Carol?!!! Y'all know that Carol was Ross Geller ex-wife, who turned out to be gay and married a Susan sorry...it's prob just me thinking this is funny that the two names turn up again in this context...

They will cut 4 and make it top 10 after the first public vote so I hope they survive. I think they will. Such a difference between Sam and Adam in how the media treated them from the beginning. Adam said that he grew weary of always being asked about "being gay." It must have been a real novelty for the media to have someone like Adam, who was open and somewhat willing to talk about it, because he is naturally polite and kind. Maybe he was TOO willing. Because he was so nice about it, he had to sit through interview after interview with people who wanted him to do make-up demonstrations or style their hair or talk about boyfriends or some other more sexually-related topics, things they would never ask a straight singer .He had to play along and laugh at some gay-related jokes and comments, even though they were not meant to be mean-spirited. He was a very good sport about it. Does anyone else remember when an interviewer gave him a condom packet to sign? He once said, "It's all anybody wants to talk about. But it shouldn't be any big deal." I wonder how often SS gets asked about "being gay." With him, it's more of a non-issue. Adam often had a hard time squeezing in much conversation about his music. People sometimes say that the gay singers who chose NOT to come out before they became famous were not courageous or honest. But in reality, they were just trying to protect themselves and get their careers going without the controversy or rejection. Adam was honest from the get-go and paid the price. Those who followed him don't know how lucky they are. But just to be fair, Adam does choose to live a very openly gay social life. Most other gay singers do not, at least that I can tell. As for Idol, I just hope someone very talented wins. And good luck to them. It ain't easy out there. As I've said many times, Idol viewers love to vote, but they don't often support their favorite after the show is over. At least not enough to make a contestant really successful. Viewers tend to walk away from the show and say, "Well, that was fun." and forget about it. That's what happened to the last number of years of the original Idol. Few fans stuck around to actually buy the music.

Sam is a safe gay. Adam is a sexy gay. Huge difference in the acceptability! Thank gawd for sexy Adam! I feel compelled to say Sam WAS a safe gay but he seems to have shed that safe personae and opted to be more open about his sexuality....he even posed and sent out a pic of himself in a dress. We have those few early pics of Adam in the pink dress but other than that, even he has not done this....so....time will tell if this derails Sam's success or not. I wish him luck...what happens to him will have strong impacts on what others do ...or do not do, I suspect. Too bad....it also makes it impossible to judge whether changes in popularity are rooted in sexual orientation or quality/popularity of the music. Aggravating.....

Sam is like Barry Manilow!
