Such a difference between Sam and Adam in how the media treated them from the beginning. I wonder how often SS gets asked about "being gay." With him, it's more of a non-issue. Adam often had a hard time squeezing in much conversation about his music. People sometimes say that the gay singers who chose NOT to come out before they became famous were not courageous or honest. But in reality, they were just trying to protect themselves and get their careers going without the controversy or rejection. Adam was honest from the get-go and paid the price. Those who followed him don't know how lucky they are. Yep. That pretty much sums it up. Adam is a sexy, talented and gorgeous man. But I don't think he is viewed as unsafe or unworthy except by the bigots and sometimes the jealous. And he is maybe not that appealing to parents who bring their teens and tweens to concerts. Sam is more like Ed, Mendes, Puth and many other male artists who have gone far without being sexy or even all that interesting, at least to me. But US radio plays them all the time to send them to the top of the charts. With that you get the award nominations and performances which help your career. Adam is not denied enough radio play in the US to have big hits because he it too sexy. I think there is a lot more involved than that. And Sam did benefit because they let his music take center stage instead of his sexuality. He is more open now but his career has already hit huge heights. Grammy's, Oscar, Brit Awards. But I am really thankful that Adam has the career achievements that he has. Hopefully A4 will bring him more.

I feel compelled to say Sam WAS a safe gay but he seems to have shed that safe personae and opted to be more open about his sexuality....he even posed and sent out a pic of himself in a dress. We have those few early pics of Adam in the pink dress but other than that, even he has not done this....so....time will tell if this derails Sam's success or not. I wish him luck...what happens to him will have strong impacts on what others do ...or do not do, I suspect. Too bad....it also makes it impossible to judge whether changes in popularity are rooted in sexual orientation or quality/popularity of the music. Aggravating..... Not what I meant. Safe vs sexy. Sam is like Barry Manilow! Sam was careful to wait until he made it big before he chose to be seen in a pink dress. Doesn't make any difference to his fanbase now, although it might have if he had come out beforehand. Adam was in lots of gay-provocative photos from his pre-Idol days and many of them surfaced after Idol. SS may not have anything similar from his past. Adam has always been confident and unapologetic about anything he has done. And yes, Sam is our current Barry Manilow. Perfect comparison. Non-threatening. Not openly sexual. Nice. Nice voice. Barry and Sam have looks and personas that blend in well with most straight guys. Adam simply cannot hide his natural sexiness. It's just a part of him. It oozes out like honey. It's not natural to him to just be like any other straight guy. Thank God for that, but it comes with a price. Bottom line, one singer is accepted with certain traits and another singer with the same traits will not be accepted. There is no fairness involved. No rules. It's all perception and emotion on the part of the fans. We love who we love.

Sam is a safe gay. Adam is a sexy gay. Huge difference in the acceptability! Thank gawd for sexy Adam! Sam is doing things now that he didn't do from the beginning. He was already a major star and accepted for his music long before he started to really express himself. Adam on the other hand was attacked from the beginning on his sexuality. He wasn't given a chance by some once that was known. Don't know why his label let him down after that amazing first album and tour. He should have been non stop on our radio's , TV, award shows etc. Can't go back so forward it is and Adam has taken the bull by the horns and done it his way! Thank God for QAL.

Barry Weiss was at the top at RCA and he was Adam's biggest champion at the start of his career. He even talked about Adam in Behind the Music. He left before Adam's second album and I really think that kind of support left with him. His radio team really worked hard to get Adam radio play. They were let go from RCA when Barry left. Barry went on to head the label that Frank Ocean was on. Frank said it was Barry who got him the money and support to make his debut album such a big success. I really think if Barry had stayed, he would have made sure Adam's #1 Trespassing album had support and radio support. But you are right, we can't go back. But I will be forever be grateful that Barry made sure that Adam went international at the beginning of his career. It really served him well even in harder times.

What don't you agree with...you are saying just what i said...all I wondered was whether Sam's new found openness will have an impact on his popularity....good grief... Sam was 'out' from very early on if I remember correctly...he was just so very 'safe'....which is just what I said. He has now gotten much more open and flamboyant and I just mused on the possible impact of that. I am not a fan of his...I am here am I not?

I think there may already be an impact here in the United states.Whether his second album just isn't as popular or whether he wore high heels and said basically that he feels as much a woman as a man made an impact.. Can't tell. IMHO,His second album doesn't have the numbers the first one did.I respect him so much for being the real Sam.. he's talented, fun and can help to make a difference for the LGBTQ community.. Just hope he opens the door for others..IMO I still think he's a bit of a token in the U.S.music industry.I still feel that Adam was going to be the token until he refused to play the game..I'm undecided on how I feel about Billboard having a gay pride section for gay singers and their supporters..Does it help or stigmatize.. To add, Boy George said ,to paraphrase ,that if Adam was an English singer he would be huge..

Sam didn't come out until Stay With Me was HUGE in he UK & getting a good start in the US. He was not out when Stay With Me first came out. IDK, if it would have made a difference. no way to tell. US radio seems to love UK artists, so he probably would have gotten the play here no matter what.
