You can't overestimate the importance of Z100 as a "leader". I read this about three weeks ago on AO, but didn't want to report it here as it was too depressing. Now, in the current mood, I think it is ok to pass it on. What the fan reported on AO was she called a station in Danbury, CT. The DJ said that he liked NCOE more than "the first single". But he played songs based on what the big stations (like Z100) were playing, and NCOE wasn't getting any play. The DJ said that in the business, NCOE was considered "a stiff", dead on arrival. If Z100 is so important, I have to wonder what RCA did wrong that Adam had not one, but two singles that Z100 wouldn't support. Z100 is important but not essential. It is the #1 Pop station in the US, and the #2 station in the biggest market in the US New York. Because they are so successful, many PDs follow them. Particularly East Coast Clear Channel stations. RCA had WKTU - the #2 Pop station in the US and also in NY on board. They are also a leader station. I think they believed that NCOE would make it and the quality of the song + Bruno Mars connection would be enough.

I would argue that Z100 is essential. Of all stations, this one is essential. You can have a hit without support from LA KISS, but not Z100.

It sounds like Z100 made up it's mind before NCOE even came out...WHY do you suppose they refused to give it a chance?? Very surprised ,they really seemed like Adam supporters for first album.. What changed? Dead on Arrival.. why??

The big mystery, to me, is that if RCA could get Z on board so quickly with WWFM and IIHY, then why not with NCOE? Not even some overnight coutesy spins? :-/ This is what I think happened. All my wacky opinion and probably imagination, so take it with a grain of salt. First, BTIKm was the wrong song for CHR. It didn't get high enough on HAC to crossover. All of that I understand. RCA's choice of BTIKM hurt NCOE badly. Because of this the Z conglomerate, whihc is WKTU, decided that they would 1) Have Adam do their NJ Summer Beach show. 2) In return add NCOE to their playlist. And play it they did. They gave it a good chance to catch on. But, it didn't. I think KTU was the test for Z100 and the song failed. Q102 also tried to get this song some popularity. True, neither of these 2 stations put it in power rotation, but they played it eough to see if it would catch on with fans other than the Glamberts. It didn't. :( ETA: Q3, if Z100 is the 2nd biggest station in NYC, what is the first? I always thought they were the first.

Hello numbers people! I've been out of the country (not the UK) and on a family vacation for a long while, but I was able to scan through the numbers a couple of times a week. It looks like NCOE is over and we are in a holding pattern waiting to see what happens next... Fun!

Because the #"s weren't good on BTIKM? NOCE considered a boring song? THen why didn't RCA know this? this is all so frustating. Will his international sales be enough to salvage Adam?

Didn't Adam say that RCA shopped a few single options with radio PDs and NCOE was the one that the PDs chose? If I'm remembering this corrrectly, then the DOA comment doesn't make sense to me. ETA: Just read mys*&@^#r's comment. This makes more sense. NCOE got some test play and didn't catch on. But I find that somehow more frightening. Because if NCOE was rejected by the radio audience, what incentive do PDs have to play the next Adam single, if there is one? With 2 singles that went nowhere on CHR, why would they go for the third one? Ugh. I need to cheer myself up now. Time to watch some Queen + Adam videos, and think ahead to Thursday's concert. Oh yeah, and get some work done, too. Pesky job.

Oh, looks like the jury still out on the final state of NCOE, judging from this morning's activities. We'll see....
