When I see the number 1500 complaints, what always hits me is that is not very many at all. Weren't there over 500,000 complaints over the Janet Jackson malfunction? I'm sure I've told this story on here before (or on some previous incarnation of this board) but I was in new york during the AMAs and I got to see Adam live on the Letterman show the next day! Yay! (it was recorded monday but aired wednesday). And as I was taking the subway back uptown from times square after Letterman, I was bitching to my husband, who was with me, about the ridiculousness of the whole ABC, GMA thing. And a youngish guy, maybe late thirties, sitting across from us on the subway leaned forward and said, "excuse me, sorry to interrupt, but I couldn't help hearing, are you talking about Adam Lambert?" And I said yes, we were. And it turns out he was a middle-level production type guy at ABC and at GMA, and he had been in the meeting where they discussed the complaints and decided to cancel Adam. And I gave him my best outraged arguments, about how ridiculous I thought it was, and also about how all these fans had come to NYC--flown from far away in some cases--to go to the mini-concert Adam was supposed to give (remember how they were going to have it in this special theater that seated many people for the occasion?). Anyway, he looked sheepish, and frowned, and said, oh, I didn't really think about that, can't they go to the Early Show instead? He kept hedging, and wanting to have it both ways, playing the "people were upset" card, and the "there was a lot of pressure on the network" card, but he himself pointed out that GMA had just had Rihanna on doing a very risque number that everyone loved, and then he leaned in and agreed with me, and said "We only got 1500 complaints--that's like, none--we get more than that for an average episode of DWTS." SO there you go. He was still kinda trying to make apologies and offer some kind of logic for ABC's reaction, but you could tell his heart wasn't in it and that he thought it was all kinda bullshit. He thanked us nicely for talking about it, when we had to get off, but I was still kinda pissed (though I definitely didn't go batshit on him, LOL). But anyway, long story short (too late for that : you're perfectly right, rama--1500 is a Very Low Number of complaints. I got that straight from the horse's (ass's) mouth. And every time I read an article like this touting the number like it's some big thing, I roll my eyes and think about how I know that even ABC didn't think that number was particularly high. You may have told this story before, but it is new to me. Thanks for repeating it. My own personal take on the debacle is that ABC hired Adam to be the fierce, slightly dangerous, beautiful tiger at end their show. They choreographed him in a provocative way. They pimped him. "Ladies and gentlemen, see the ferocious, wild tiger. You won't believe your eyes." They set him up. They unleashed him. And Adam just did what a tiger does when wound up and released. In the process, the "tame" tiger scared the shit out of the handlers. Quaking, they realized they had a tiger by the tail, and canceled future performances. They just couldn't take the risk that the tiger might act like a wild animal again. Plus, having once been bitten, they had to slap that tiger down a bit for acting so fierce. But, all's well that ends well, and ultimately Adam survived and triumphed. ABC, not so much.

I would assume Adam is going because he's a huge fan. And, it would be rude to keep your guest at home, no? You are probably right, but you are "following Adam's lead" which would be the proper way to do it, IMO. Bad bad me - I did sign and wish him a Happy Birthday. But I'm following my own lead anyway, since I've known about Sauli since 2007 like quite a few other Finns who signed that card too, some in Finnish and some in English. Sauli does have his own fans and friends, not everything in his life is or has been with Adam to do. He has lived almost 26 years without Adam, and is a person of his own with his own life too. Edit. did write more but edited it away. Back to lurk hoping for a better tomorrow. zinnia Just woke up and saw your post. You're absolutely right. I can only speak for myself here but if in ANYWAY I offended you I'm really really sorry. This has nothing to do with the Finnish fans who know Sauli or with the new fans he gained with Adam. I got to love him, really love him too, just from a few YT vids.I hope with the other posts you can understand that we're not talking about anyone who tried to trend the happy birthday or signed the card, but for the people who tried to do so for other reasons. Speaking in another language than your own sometimes can twist the original thought you had in mind. Please dont turn to lurking. I got to love you and again I'm really sorry :(

Verrry interesting...! Really enjoyed reading your anecdote, don't remember seeing it before. I forgot that people had flown into NYC for that cancelled mini-concert!

RT mdgz86: At the gaga concert. Got here late but in a VIP booth and adam Lambert is here with a big group. ;D ;D ;D Not "there's a big group in the VIP booth, including that crazy guy from Idol." Not, "there's a bunch of artists in the VIP booth." Nope. It's "ADAM LAMBERT is here with his entourage." Another indication that BB has made it!

But, all's well that ends well, and ultimately Adam survived and triumphed. ABC, not so much. They TOTALLY set him up. That was yet another thing that upset me at the time (the Hicklin letter being the worst). They pimped him relentlessly, using the word "shocking" to keep people glued to their tv sets. And then when he WAS *shocking*, they cancelled his future performances. Blatantly hypocritical. And callous. The tiger analogy is beautiful, but I'm not sure I agree. I don't have any sense that he was caged or on a leash of any kind. That choreography, imo, was designed by Adam, working in conjunction with a choreographer. My sense (and I could be wrong) is that Adam was completely in charge of that performance. I think he was given free reign to do what he wanted. And he got a little over-ambitious, imo. He was like a kid in a candy store, and of course he wanted to do something spectacular. And he was encouraged to do so. I honestly think people were saying "this kid is amazing, let him do whatever he wants, it'll be great tv". I keep thinking of the Zodiac show vid where he wants to have flames coming out of his effin head, and he is gently told "no". There was no one in this instance who said "no, too much" to him. The choreography was kind of a disaster with that song, because along with his nerves it affected his vocals. And after watching the rehearsal footage with the complicated scaffolding, I totally had a premonition of his fall. I almost died when it actually happened. But, Adam being Adam, he transformed a potential disaster into something iconic after all. OMG, I need to shut up about the AMAs. Sorry!!

Delurking to add simply as a point of reference, beginning approximately two hours into the show - or about an hour before Adam took the stage, his appearance was promoted by ABC as: “A performance from Adam Lambert that everyone will be talking about tomorrow.” “…don’t miss the eye-popping performance from Adam Lambert on ABC.” “…spectacular debut of Adam Lambert.” “…comes down to this – an outrageous performance by Adam Lambert.” Think these points were all met or exceeded....
