All the single-selling angst is starting to remind me of the presidential campaigns. As if having all the answers is as easy as pie if we had the right people making the decisions. It is a sucky situation no matter how we look at it but I am not sure what magic tricks fans want Adam's team to come up with. I meant to add to my pledge: if Adam doesn't get Idol then I will refrain from feeling like the experts know less than I do about selling songs to radio and, instead, will assume there is a lot going on behind the scenes that I will never know about and they have Adam's and their best interests and pocketbooks in mind. Why would we assume Adam would put up with anything less? ETA I have always felt that nobody can replace adam--even in backup vocals. His layering is so beautiful. This maybe why I m shocked to find I prefer many recorded songs to the live this era. Sadly, those who have Adam's best interests in mind have failed twice, behind the scenes talks or no. btikm and ncoe flopped on the radio, did not sell well, and did not help the album, which is not selling well. Selling songs to radio is not a science; if it were, there'd be no flops. Since it's obviously not a science, since people responsible have already failed Adam twice this era, there is room for backseat drivers. I will bitch aplenty. Just because Adam, like a great many singers today ,Isn't selling as well as Kelly or RiRi or Bruno Mars or whomever, doesn't make his singles or his album a FLOP. He did make# 1 on BB. The album has gained critical acclaim. Success isn't only about money and charting,It's about being an artist who makes his audience feel..Adam is not only a singer ,he is a performer and a great one at that. IMHO,there are lots of very famous singers/bands who have never been radio favorites and yet they have had longevity and success.Just sayin

Me three. ;D The first couple of performances of BTIKM were done with backing tracks and IMO were pretty flawless and were what I have come to expect from an Adam performance. Those are the times where I can see why "others" think Adam might be lip syncing, because the song sounds so close to the CD. I don't think it has anything to do with the band, backing singers or anything else. IMO, some songs need Adam backing Adam to sound like the songs on the CD. This is especially important when doing promo on TV or big radio promo events like the Jingle Bell Balls, where there are potential new fans listening. The back-up singers can sing along, but I miss Adam's voice in the background on live performances. Sorry, but Imma gonna have to disagree. Why would a live performance of a song need to sound like the CD? If that's what I wanted, I could just stay home and listen to the CD. I think one of the joys of live performance is that it allows singers to try new approaches to songs, to improvise and "play" a bit. And since Adam is so talented, it's exciting to see what he can do with a song. (As evidence, see WWFM and Aftermath live vs. recorded; also, the new live endings to Cuckoo and PTL, the "rap" in NL, etc.). And I don't think Adam has done anything in the live performances of the songs from Trespassing that is a radical departure from the recorded versions. Also, I've got to think that performers enjoy the opportunity to mix things up a bit. Adam says he gets bored quickly -- I think changing things up probably helps keep songs fresh for him. Regarding singing to backing tracks, as much as I love Adam's voice, I'm enjoying hearing him sing with other voices in the mix. Not gonna get into whether the back-up singers are the right voices, but I enjoy the variety. And if I'm paying to see/hear a "live" performance, I prefer that the singing be live, too (if possible). Did you not see this part of my post? "This is especially important when doing promo on TV or big radio promo events like the Jingle Bell Balls, where there are potential new fans listening." If the live versions (during a concert tour) were improving on the CD versions, I would agree with you. JMHO :D

An album that will be lucky if it sells gold internationally+domestically (I know gold is given per nation) is not a success. Two songs that failed to sell or chart are not successes. This era has been troubling all along.

JMHO :D Yes, I read your entire post, and as I said, I do not agree that live performances have to duplicate the CD version ... even at Jingle Balls or on TV. Adam has not done anything so radical with the Trespassing songs that they are unrecognizable compared to the CD version. And I do not think that the live performances to date have been inferior to the CD version. I went to 2 concerts in July and I enjoyed the performances with the band and back-up singers as much as the recorded versions. They sounded different, of course, but not inferior. We'll have to agree to disagree, I'm afraid.

I think there is a big difference between playing to fans in a smaller venue and playing to a broader audience in a larger setting. The kind of song differs as well. Upbeat dance songs such as Fever, Shady, Cuckoo and PTL, for example, are really improved by backing tapes, IMHO. Ballad types of tracks are improved by less back-up with a singer such as Adam as he can add such a sense of immediacy and emotion to his vocal performances as we saw last season with Soaked, especially, and OOL and Underneath...if he ever performs them :-/ ... Some such as Naked Love or Chokehold stand well both ways I think... If I go to a concert and can only 'see' him on the jumbotron, I am not going to really even know if he has live backing or tracks...but I will only know if it does not sound as great/cool as the original....

He's in it, not to just win it, but to establish credibility as an artist& to have longevity. It takes time. Hopefully RCA and Adam's fans will concur.

Just saying I would love for this to be true, but this era is nothing like the last era internationally. Define doing well, because the iTunes charts outside of the US don't really match up with my definition of doing well. :(
