Thanks for the Idol news. I'm not so sure if Kree will go -- there seem to be a lot of country music voters out there. I really hope Candice makes it to the end. I noticed that People magazine singled her out, mentioning her "powerhouse vocals." It was in the Gwynneth Paltrow issue in the television section. Anyhow, I thought that was a nice boost for Candice.

Checked to see what the critics were saying about the Idol top three tonight. They all raved about Candice's rendition of "Somewhere." Found the audio on YT. IMHO she blugeoned the song. Plowed through it hardly any nuance or development. Taking breaths in unmusical places without regard to the phrasing of the melody or lyrics. Yes, she's got a huge voice, but where is the artistry in belting out almost the entire song? Or adding all the ornamentation and riffs on the melody? Leonard Bernstein's melody wasn't good enough?
Contrast that with Barbra's version, live from 1994. (And listen to Barbra's message in the intro; the same as Adam's 15-20 years later.)
And here is the divine Julie Andrews with a more classical voice singing a soft, touching version. Listen to her long, lyrical lines, and warm and effortless tone. She tells a story with the song, builds to a wonderful climax, and finishes with a whisper.
It just puzzles me that folks rave on and on about singers in pop music today, like they are the best they ever heard. Well, maybe they are, which is sad, actually. Not to have heard really exceptional, outstanding singers. Sigh.

Thank you so much for the vids, cassie! I don't listen to much music, but Julie Andrews voice is truly distinctive - love listening to her, she always sounds so warm for some reason. Candice's breathing has always been kinda all over the place through the competition, as far as I can tell. But on oversinging... the first half sounded quite pleasing ("I wonder if cassie is just being nit-picky" )... and then I heard the 2nd half. Oh well, Melinda Doolittle did mention before (on Idology? Idoloonies? with Slezak anyway...) that being on Idol can make the contestants lose some perspective - they'll push harder to show everyone "what they can do". So higher notes and too many riffs start making appearances; and it doesn't help when the (ahem) judges rave on and on about those parts. But those extra riffs are why I'd far rather listen to Disney movie cartoon songs as they were sung during the movie rather than the commercial versions sung by the celebrity singers.

You are right that the first part of Candice's rendition was not oversung. But it did not start out soft or subtle, and hence did not leave enough room to build the arc without oversinging the rest. A great singer sees the movement and direction of the entire song, the starting, middle and end, the storyline, to create artistry. I agree that the judges on Idol seem to love and give standing ovations to renditions that are big and loud and high and decorated with riffs. It's showy. Splashy. Adam recognized that and gave that to them in many songs. The difference I heard with Adam is that, one, he still gives us an arc throughout the song, and, two, the riffs and high notes make sense and have meaning with the words and melody and storyline of the song. (Oh, and they are much more controlled than many other singers.) IMHO. YMMV.

What I was surprised at was the raves she got from the judges for "One". I was going "I've heard this song, she's terrible". Hubby agreed and since he's not into Adam, no comparison from him.

I didn't like her version of either "One" or "Somewhere" -- way too over-praised by the judges. I like Candice, but these were not her best performances. She sounded off-key and "shouty" in places. I'm wondering whether all of these women were simply exhausted -- the schedule for them this week was particularly brutal. I also think part of the problem with "One" was how truncated it was -- it's a tough song to cut down to about 90 seconds. Adam had the same issue in Season 8. He sang the song better than Candice did, but it still seemed to be a bit rushed. At this point in the competition, Idol should let the contestants sing songs in their entirety, not just bits and pieces. I'd rather have them sing 1 or 2 full songs each than chopped up versions of 3.
As a reminder, here is Adam:

I've gotta say that I wanted to hug Laura Saltman when I read this.
