The Man of the Moon[/size][/color]
9.30.12, the 15th day of the eighth month on the Chinese calendar.

Today is Zhong Qiu Jie (Mid-Autumn Festival or Chinese Moon Festival). It is an ancient holiday celebrated in China and around the world.

The holiday is thought to be the ideal time to start, renew or strengthen friendships and romantic relationships. Family and friends come together to revel in a spirit of completeness and abundance with parties and family gatherings decorated with brightly colored lanterns. The traditional food served is the Moon Cake, a sweet yellow cake traditionally filled with lotus seed paste. Other traditional foods are naturally red or colored red for good luck and may include lobster, salmon, pomegranates, peanuts and fatt koh (sweet steamed rice cake).




Accompanying the celebration, there are additional cultural or regional customs, such as:

- Eating mooncakes.

- Matchmaking. In some parts of China, dances are held for young men and women to find partners. "One by one, young women are encouraged to throw their handkerchiefs to the crowd. The young man who catches and returns the handkerchief has a chance of romance."

- Carrying brightly lit lanterns, lighting lanterns on towers, floating sky lanterns.

- Burning incense in reverence to deities including Chang'e

- Fire Dragon Dances.

- Moon rabbit is a traditional icon.

The Moon Festival Tales

The Moon Festival is full of legendary stories. Legend says that Chang Er flew to the moon, where she has lived ever since. You might see her dancing on the moon during the Moon Festival. The Moon Festival is also an occasion for family reunions. When the full moon rises, families get together to watch the full moon, eat moon cakes, and sing moon poems. With the full moon, the legend, the family and the poems, you can't help thinking that this is really a perfect world. That is why the Chinese are so fond of the Moon Festival.

The Moon Festival is also a romantic one. A perfect night for the festival is if it is a quiet night without a silk of cloud and with a little mild breeze from the sea. Lovers spend such a romatic night together tasting the delicious moon cake with some wine while watching the full moon. Even for a couple who can't be together, they can still enjoy the night by watching the moon at the same time so it seems that they are together at that hour. A great number of poetry has been devoted to this romantic festival. Hope the Moon Festival will bring you happiness.


A Discovery

When I learned that today was the Moon Festival, and that Adam was appearing on The Voice of China, I thought it was just a coincidence. Then someone emailed me a tip that it was “more than a coincidence.” So, I started to do some research. I dug through some old files and found that it might not be what it seemed.

NEW Stories of the Chinese Moon Festival

I. The Singer

The time of this story is around 2170 B.C. The earth once had ten suns circling over it, each took its turn to illuminate to the earth. But one day all ten suns appeared together, scorching the earth with their heat. The earth was saved by a strong and lyrical singer Hou Lam Bert. He succeeded in shooting down nine of the suns. One day, Hou Lam Bert stole the elixir of song from a goddess. After drinking it, he found himself floating and flew to the moon.


II. The Rapper - Wu Kang

Wu Kang was a shiftless fellow who changed apprenticeships all the time. One day he decided that he wanted to be a rapper. Wu Kang then went to live in the city – the “Big Apple” – where he importuned an immortal DJ to teach him. First the immortal DJ taught him about the words used to inspire, but after three days his characteristic restlessness returned and he asked the immortal DJ to teach him something else. So the immortal DJ to teach him about rhythm, but after a short while Wu Kang's enthusiasm again waned. Then Wu Kang was given the books of immortality to study. Of course, Wu Kang became bored within a few days, and asked if they could travel to some new and exciting place. Angered with Wu Kang's impatience, the master banished Wu Kang to the Moon Palace telling him that he must cut down a huge cassia tree before he could return to earth. Though Wu Kang chopped day and night, the magical tree restored itself with each blow, and thus he is up there chopping still.


III. The Jade Entertainer

In this legend, three fairies begged for a song from the cosmic wolf, the empire’s greatest vocalist. The cosmic wolf said NO and the three fairies jumping into a blazing fire planning to die. The sages were so touched by the fairies. sacrifice that they let them live in the Moon Palace, a building constructed entirely of Jade, with the cosmic wolf. Each day the cosmic wolf sang and danced and entertained them. Thus, he became the "Jade Entertainer."


IV. The Cake - Moon Cake

During the Yuan dynasty (A.D.1280-1368) China was ruled by the Mongolian people. Leaders from the preceding Sung dynasty (A.D.960-1280) were unhappy at submitting to foreign rule, and set how to coordinate the rebellion without it being discovered. The leaders of the rebellion, knowing that the Moon Festival was drawing near, ordered the making of special cakes. Baked into each moon cake was a message with the lyrics to the Trespassing song and illustrations of choreography. On the night of the Moon Festival when the Trespassing song was played, the rebels successfully formed a flash mob and overthrew the government. What followed was the establishment of the Ming dynasty (A.D. 1368-1644). Today, moon cakes are eaten to commemorate this legend. The reference to the Trespassing song and the meaning of “flash mob” remains a mystery but scholars agree it must have been a very powerful song. Don’t you wish you could hear this ancient song of rebellion?


V. The Voice

In modern times, all across the world, there was a search for “the voice”. The media emperors created programs to find real talent and called these unreal shows, “reality”. They assembled judges from the four corners of the earth. Seven years passed and “the voice” was not heard. Then on one day in September 2008, in San Francisco, a secret audition was held. Not surprisingly, I have learned it was during the Moon Festival. The judges were unanimous that they heard “the voice” and decided that it had to be revealed. Today, 4 years later, the same singer will perform on The Voice of China stage. Some things are meant to be. Some things are more than coincidence.

When I spoke with Adam last night before the Benefit for Marriage Equality, I said how exciting it is to hear his Trespassing single being played in different countries like South Africa and Canada, adding we are eager and ready to support its official release in the US. Adam emphatically said he would DEFINITELY let us know when "the trigger is going to be pulled for Trespassing” here. I didn’t ask about specific dates—it was enough seeing how relaxed and happy Adam appeared to be about what lies ahead for his awesome new single. : )
