Oh, and while I'm ranting....
I normally avoid Fox News like the plague. But it was on in the cafeteria when I went to get lunch today (thank-you dear asshat with the potential explosives who put us all into lockdown mode today so I couldn't go anywhere else to eat), and Ms. Perky Blond in "Oh-The-World-Is-Gonna-END mode was talking to "Mitt Romney supporter Rudolph Giuliani".
So Giuliani then started droning on and on about the tragedy in New York, and what a bad job FEMA and Obama was doing in terms of getting services back to people after Hurricane Sandy. Then, as camera's showed an apartment that was {gasp} still dark, Giuliani started pontificating...
"After 9-11, when I asked for generators, I got generators. When I asked for water, I got water", etc. etc. etc.
Well Mr. ex-Mayor, no matter how bad 9-11 was, it took out MAYBE 10 SQUARE BLOCKS as compared to a storm that hit 1/3 OF THE FREAKING UNITED STATES. There **ARE** no extra generators to be had. Those West Virginians freezing in the blizzard? They want generators. All those people flooded out in New Jersey? They want generators. And generators were sold out BEFORE the storm even hit. And you know what? Whatever generators FEMA can get their hands on? They're going to hospitals and schools long before individual homeowners are getting them.
Does it suck? Yup. Sure does. At lot. But to blame Obama and his handling of FEMA on ELECTION DAY only one week after a superstorm that flooded out the biggest metropolitan area worse than even the worst-case scenario, and paralyzed a huge proportion of the country, you've got some nerve.
Particularly since you are a notably clever man who KNOWS BETTER, and could/would spin that story in the other direction in a heartbeat if it suited you. That newscast speech was purely an effort to sway voters. I swear, the spin on that story was so egregious that I felt ill. And you *know* that a proportion of people watching were going "Yup. Why yes, yer right. Government obviously mucking up. Can't trust them to do anything right,"
[growling more]

Katrina affected an area of 90,000 square miles. Sandy affected almost 2 million square miles. Some Republicans are trying to say that Obama's response to Sandy is no better than Bush's response to Katrina because Obama wasn't able to wave a magic wand and make everything all better within a day after the storm.

Just got back from voting and it took about five minutes. No wait at all but longish ballot. I have voted in California all my adult life mostly in San Diego and now in a small town on the coast, and I have never stood in line more than a half hour. I do not understand why other states have these long lines.
I also think the country is more polarized than I have ever seen it. There are huge difference on social issues, economic and foreign policy. These differences are magnified by each side's media like Fox News and MSMBC (which I love to watch myself).

My parents seem to be somewhat afraid of Obama -- and sadly I think it has to do with race. However, they would never admit it. They have become markedly more conservative since they have been living in Arizona around a bunch of mostly white older folks. Sigh.

I don't think I can watch this on tv all night. I won't have hand left, with all the nail and skin biting.
