Don't assume that your experience with bullying is everyone's experience. There are plenty of kids for whom bullying is a matter of name-calling, and it does make them feel bad--sometimes bad enough to kill themselves. It doesn't have to be a worse-case scenario to be serious. Adam is talking about giving kids the skills to cope with that kind of bullying, and the courage to seek help for worse kinds of bullying.First, albiku I wouldn't even say what happened to you was bullying. It was physical violence and those kids should have been charged and arrested. Yeah it was beyond bullying. It was a crime :-/

albiku, I am so sorry about what happened to you. I hope there is a hell so those people who brutalized you and your family can go to it. Adam's heart is in the right place, but he has waded into something very complex with a very superficial take on it, and is perpetuating a lot of myths. This is worth reading: www.bullyonline.org/schoolbully/myths.htm

Adam Lambert @adamlambert
it's a case by case thing. If someone's being so viciously bullied that its affecting their mental health - yes- huge problem we must stop

But because its become such a trendy way to identify certain kinds of typical teenage angst, I hope it's not making it worse.

Seriously, he doesn't know what he's talking about. So he had no friends and he had to sit alone at lunch. I understand how bad that is, but that's not bullying. Petty bullshit is not bullying. Please, Adam, stop. I have to say it saddened me to read your story and know that you had to go through all that. I know bullying leaves marks that go beyond the bruises. Bruises fade, the rest doesn't. I know of someone who had a similar experience through school as you did, I can still see the impact it had on him then and now. I also know what bullying did to me. Though I was only physically bullied a handful of times (and only one of those would I consider very serious), I had to suffer through years and years of psychological abuse. It was more than petty comments. I wish Adam hadn't used those words. It diminishes the importance of the subject at hand. Scars are forever and they shape the people we become. Although I don't agree with everything Adam's said today, I understand that was his experience and his opinion. He's entitled to it. I just know different. Also have to say I love the discussion it started. My twitter feed is filled with personal experiences from kids themselves, to parents and teachers. Talking helps the healing process, at least a little bit.

Sarah Z @zorabet @adamlambert Again, it is the responsibility of people not to bully each other. It is no one's responsibility to be able to handle bullying.
Adam Lambert @adamlambert @zorabet I disagree. I think it's everyone's responsibility. The only ones we should truly have power over is ourselves.

I wish Adam hadn't used those words. It diminishes the importance of the subject at hand. Exactly. And he's still doing it. He's implying that the victim is at fault for "not being able to take it", for "giving power over themselves to the bullies" when the fact is that bullies take that power without permission. I understand his point of view and why he's saying this, but I disagree completely. And it's going to take me a few days to get over how bad it's made me feel.

Adam Lambert @adamlambert
The irony of course is how this is all viewed outside of school, in the adult world. The celebrity scene is a prime example.
