What I learned from some funny glasses and a tweet

The past few days have been a roller coaster for Adam fans. Like every Adam roller coaster ride, there were some moments of great insight, musing, jokes and speculation. Speculating is part of what fans do. I have done my share and a bit more. And I have been wrong my share of times.

But a brief period of wild speculation about something so small and trivial -- the meaning of Adam wearing some glasses Friday night -- made me step back and think. It was a reminder that sometimes there is no deep meaning. Sometimes what things appear to be, may not be reality.



Yesterday, when the photos of Adam in glasses appeared, I saw some posts and Tweets explaining how Adam actually needs to wear eye glasses or contacts. The proof of this was there are photos of him wearing glasses from 2009, and some with him wearing contacts, etc. Other people were discussing Adam's new fashion statement and critiquing it.

Many fans noticed that there was no glass in the frames and figured that Adam was playing around.

Some fans were just speculating for fun.

But the speculation included a few real speculations. My favorite speculation was that it
was a sign that Adam was working on a hip hop collaboration for Adam 3.

Well, all the speculation stopped when Adam cleared this mystery up with this tweet:




And, indeed those glasses are just empty frames and did not even belong to Adam.

I never believed the glasses were meaningful. But I could have. And just the chance that I could have seem deep meaning where there was none, made me think that I needed to step back a bit and see the forest, not just the tree.

I've decided to become more skeptical. Not in a bad way, just to take a moment to doubt and to determine if I am looking at things clearly.

Even if I am more careful and embrace doubt, perhaps what I "see" is distorted by my lens of perception.

The past few days have been filled with a lot of personal interpretations and observations about love, life and relationships.  I have also done my share, and a bit more, of this interpretation "work". But what do I really "see"?

Each observer sees things a bit differently. We seek out people who see what we see and embrace those observations because it confirms that our vision is clear and true.

Hal Zina Bennett in his cult classic book, "Developing the inner-seeking eye of the modern-day shaman", put forward this description of lens of perception--"the part of human consciousness that creates our sense of reality."

Perspective and perception are indelibly shaped by life experiences, and life experiences are shaped by dimensions of life. I reminded myself that everything I "see" is filtered by my own thoughts, perceptions and experiences -- and emotions. My life is unique; everyone's life in unique; every worldview is unique. We don't actually "see" the same thing.


It’s difficult to separate opinions and feelings. They are intertwined. People are different and their feelings and opinions are correspondingly different. How often have I started to confuse my opinions and feelings with facts? So what is the difference?

Feelings are an emotional state or disposition; quite simply an emotion.

Opinions are a belief or conclusion held with confidence but not substantiated by positive knowledge or proof.


But the most important thing I learned is, I am here for the music, the fun, and to share my joy in all things Adam. Anything, even a cheap pair of glasses worn as a bit of fun, can be turned into a treatise about the meaning of life. I think I have just proven that.



Back to Adam in Glasses

Now to get my perspective back! There is something about Adam in glasses. All kinds of glasses. They just look right on him. A few of the many, many different glasses we've seen him wear.
