Shakira may not be that big in the USA, but she has sold 70 million records worldwide over 9 studio albums plus 5 live/concert albums. She has been filling arenas around the world for at least 3 tours and has a fragrance promotion amoung other things. So, yes, I would guess that she is easily worth $200 million and the exe is asking for half of that as a combination manager & common law husband.
I love Shakira, although not as much as Adam. She & Usher have made this season's The Voice actually watchable.
[wry grin] Also nice to learn the degree of sucess someone can have without a ton of U.S. radio. Good to know.
But most of Shakira's 70 mil album sales comes from pre-digital age, her debut album, Magia, although not a real promotional album, came out in 1991, had 7 studio/live albums prior to 2006, after that only 2 albums so far: She Wolf (2009) and Sale el Sol (2010). And, her unique background makes her much more advantageous in the department of marketing. For instance, her last album, Sale el Sol, sold only 288,000 copies in the US, but 220,000 in Colombia, another 500,000 copies in France (she's huge there) and over 4 million copies worldwide in the end. Also, her songs are actually played a lot on the US radio (especially Latin radio), "according to Nielsen Broadcast Data Systems, 'Hips Don't Lie' was the most-played pop song in a single week in American radio history. It was played 9,637 times in one week." and her "waka waka" video surpassed 1 billion views on youtube.
I agree with dancy that she's easily worth a couple of hundred million but her mega commercial success is built upon from last age.
