Words fail....................... The Russian Parliament voted 436-0, ZERO, to outlaw all mention, support, etc of gay rights or anything related. Damn - just like the good old days. I don't think Adam will be visiting Russia anytime soon. I hope many in the gay community have the financial means to leave Russia.. I fear for their lives. IMHO,The government is working the people up to a fever pitch of hatred and is provoking them to attack anyone who comes across as gay in any shape ,form or way..Government led discrimination with the full backing of the Russian Orthodox Church. The very church that faced years and years of discrimination when Russians were not allowed to practice any religion, communism ruled. This takes me back to the days of the pogroms that drove my family out of Russia.Looked up Pogrom,it is the government sponsored terrorism against one group of people. SADNESS doesn't begin to describe what's happening. [shudders] My family left Russia for the same reason. Back then the major targeted hatred was against the Jews (most who have left). Hatred was pervasive and affected families in all sorts of ways. Still remember the stories. My mom used to tell how her grandmother, after they came to America, utterly panicked when her father tried to join Boy Scouts...because Jewish boys (even at age 10) used to be taken away into the Army "to protect them from influences" and very few ever returned. The Boy Scouts' uniform gave her panic attacks because she truly believed that meant he would be snatched away. Nice to know they've picked a new group to target. But its hard, hard, hard when you need to frantically worry about the safety of your family if you make waves. Januarysnow probably knows best about how things are going, but fear can beget fear very quickly when things like this occur...particularly when people who enjoy bullying know they have free reign. And its so easy to make a minority a scapegoat.

Wow! Just thinking about Adam just being in Russia 3 months ago. Scary!! Don't we have some members from Russia? Yes we have members from Russia and some members who are Russian living in US, Canada and Western Europe. When Adam was in St. Petersburg, I was a bit concerned. That was the only time I have ever been concerned for him -- and for the fans. But Adam knows how not to be provocative when needed. I should not have worried. Reading about Russia hurts my heart. I am so glad that Adam has performed there, even despite a bomb threat. I wasn't really worried about him. But, now, I hope he does not schedule another concert while the country is in the current climate. Yes, Adam knows how not to be provocative when needed. However, just the fact that he is openly gay and a role model and spokesperson is more than enough to make him a target for crazy bigots who have the official sanction. and it appears even approval of their government. So sad for Russian fans, but so tragic for LGBTQ human beings.

[wryly] And for those who always say "Things can't get that bad; people are too civilized", I laugh b/c my husband's grandmother said exactly that phrase in ~1933 back in their beautiful house in Berlin. No matter WHAT year you're in, people can always slide to rabble-rousing intolerance. Its a horrible tale that we humans keep replaying. I live in hope that we LEARN. But its just so easy for a percentage of people to blindly believe whatever the latest talking head than to question and believe for yourself. Right now I watch the waves of tolerance and intolerance crash into each other all over the world, in our states, and our own government factions. In some places, the tides turn...and others the dark waters threaten to take over. I don't know what will happen. I hope. I fill metaphorical sandbags when I can to hold back the water. But I don't know.

ETA: I think Adam would look good dress in traditional Russian clothes. Which is good as I do believe that's what Elton John was "highly recommended" to wear versus his [gay] stage costumes for his next concert. Don't remember where I read that, but it was something I ran across within the last 2-3 days.
