I totally agree. I love the runs, it shows off teqnuqie and the beauty of the voices. I can;t imaging Adam singing without them. As far as the new judge person - I haven;t seen him mentoring except for the posted You Tube - and that was waaaay annoying to see.... You do understand that I wasn't saying that every singer who does runs is using them to disguise a lack of control, right? Nor was I saying that runs don't have their place in some songs. I just think they're often overused, especially on Idol, and especially by singers who, unlike Adam, couldn't hold a note steady for more than a few seconds. Adam does beautiful runs. He is clearly controlling every single note in the run and he knows when to use them and when not to use them. I've heard too many singers on Idol make every note into a run and it's just damned tiresome. When Adam uses runs his notes are controlled but there are times when Adam has used runs unnecessarily. People who don't like his voice say he either uses too many runs or screams. Everyone hears things differently. There has been many times when he sings I think he starts off beautifully and than he throws in a wail or run that loses me. When those acoustic trespassing recording were released last week I can't remember which song it was because it was so bad the ending was like listening to someone scratching on chalkboard. I didn't get how everyone thought it was great.

I guess I am lucky in that I LOVE all those wails and runs and the high wails especially. Those moments are like "endless treasure" to my ear...

Just saw this gif on twitter and and laughed out loud. master faffer @vegas1024 17m This is mesmerizing 24.media.tumblr.com/dc9a233dcb47f37d94cae0ec9290b8d4/tumblr_mru28cFUzG1rnxnvro1_250.gif …

I can't believe we haven't seen a gif of when he trembles in lets dance.
on the run subject I think the idol contestants feel they need to do them (good or bad)simply because that is what the audience responds to.

I didn't get how everyone thought it was great. That was Aftermath. Yeah, you weren't the only one wincing. There were a few of here saying "nope, can't listen to that again".... it was mainly that he COULD do it all that was so amazing. Not that it's necessarily very pleasant to listen to. On runs, I know it wows audiences and stuff, but personally, I'd like to hear the song's melody at least once before the performer segues into runs and ornamentation. And since Idol performances are limited in length, it means that I tend to prefer if the runs are limited to (1) the climax of the song and (2) the end of the song (if they're not the same thing in a 90 second clip ). I'd really rather NOT hear runs from the very beginning.... Maybe because HCJ's comment about not knowing the melody of the song could be more properly applied to me rather than the contestants - for someone like me whose knowledge is awfully narrow, I really don't recognise very many songs. So getting a gist of the melody first is helpful.

I've heard too many singers on Idol make every note into a run and it's just damned tiresome. Murly, I agree. Except I don't think it is because they can't hold a note steady. It's just a habit lifted from the gospel style (ala Whitney Houston), and many singers do it in an elementary way that has become a bad habit. As HCJ said--just sing the song. Adam sometimes does the sort of embellishment that I'm taking about (Xtina being a prime example). But Adam usually improvises in a much more sophisticated way--more like a jazz musician instead of simple runs and melismas that others do. He expands a melody in a way that is hard for me to describe.

Some songs should be retired after a performance like this: One of my favorite contestants (besides Adam)..ever..
Talk about taking a song to school..my god, the phrasing, runs, just all of it.
