Still thinking about what makes a great singer. I'm curious how y'all would answer the following questions? (There are no right or wrong answers.) 1. Does a great singer/performer have to have a great voice (in terms of technique, vocal production, etc.)? Looking at RS's top 10, which includes Bob Dylan, for some the answer is "no." What do you think? 2. Does a great singer/performer have to interpret a song with emotion that moves you? Do they have to impart meaning to the lyrics and phrasing as opposed to just sounding good or making you want to dance along? 3. Does a great singer/performer have to have a compelling stage presence/persona? Do they have to be "entertaining" or can they just immerse themselves in the music? 4. Does a great singer/performer have to be good looking, sexy, slim, young, stylish or any of the above? How important is visual appeal? 5. Do you have to like the genre or type of music they perform in order to think they are a great singer? 6. Do you have to know anything about their personality and off-stage behavior/life? Does that affect your appreciation of them as a singer/performer? 7. Does a great singer/performer need to compose their own music and/or play an instrument? I'd love to read your opinions, comments, and insights. Thanks. just in ,and i quick flick through the thread ,stopped here because i want to answer this there is no answer,!! because they are all different ,AND we all have different tastes ,SO we will never agree to who is the best pavarotti? dylan? and again what genre ? male? female? i could not pick a 10 best because i love so many and so varied , some already mentioned Vallo ,amazing .Lande ,Buckley, geoff tate ,kiske sammet , karevick, gioelli, ,domingo eric burdon jari maenpaa , and of course khan just a few of many ,and the ladies too many ,its personal favs again, i love tarja ,simone symonds ,manuella kraller ,but also beth hart ,striesand ,stevie nicks and how good was dusty!!! but what makes a potential top ten ,is an artist that makes ,you want MORE!!!!!! AND MORE !!!!!!!!!!!
ABOVE ARE SOME THAT MADE ME WANT MORE ,AND THE REASON IM HERE IS BECAUSE AFL made me want more

I happen to like David of the group Il Divo, here is one song that captures his and their essence. I love the bombastic voices at the end especially David, the American. He is the second singer that comes on and tallest in the group. I know some of you will say manufactured group by Simon Cowell, but they have done some good stuff. Just love David. Did I say I love David. www.youtube.com/watch?v=w77SFM7FkscJust throwing in my two cents worth ...I like the looks of the first one but the voice of the last one...the bari...for me, he is the best of the 4. But hey....any one of them could put their shoes under my bed! haha

My two cents worth - Ann Wilson - surely belongs way up there - how was she was missed in 2008 Rolling Stones list? k.d. Lang - would love to hear a duet with her and Adam. Linda Ronstadt - another beautiful and versatile singer who I would like to see get her due. Linda had a beautiful voice - she recently revealed she had lost her ability to sing due to effects of Parkinson's disease. Very sad. Ex was huge Linda fan so I've seen her live many times. She stood very still and apparently had a monitor to remind her of the lyrics BUT nothing could take away from the epic of her voice. She is INCREDIBLE. I was able to go back stage and meet her once. I told her I didn't want the show to end and she replied, "I was getting tired!" That was the first time I realized how much energy it takes to perform.

I am aware that Linda Ronstadt has lost her ability to sing due to Parkinson's. I've never met her, but I have met Ann Wilson several times through my son - while Ann has an incredibly powerful voice on stage, off-stage she is quiet and soft-spoken. And k.d. Lang sings with such beauty and clarity. I just wanted to get the names of these three great female singers out there.
