Good Influences
12.16.13 by Q3
There has been a lot of discussion among Adam fans and Queen fans about Queen + Adam Lambert. Some Queen fans worry about Queen straying too far from their rock roots or about anyone trying to replace Freddie. Some Adam fans worry about Adam not focusing on his own music or being trapped doing covers for the rest of his career. My Adam fan experience has taught me fans live to worry! So I guess many fans are having the time of their life!
My observation about his recent live performances is that something is different about Adam – and I mean different in a good way. He voice has always been brilliant, but now he has more command, more power on the stage. It may be working with Nile Rodgers or his guest star role on Queen or being recognized within the LGBT community or just maturity, but I think a lot of it comes from his work and relationship with Roger and Brian, and the experience of learning to perform a large portion of the Queen catalog.
Roger Taylor made a comment in a recent interview that reminded me of an interview Adam gave last July. Here is Roger’s comment:
Q. What is the prospect of a Queen tour in 2014 given you recently played with Adam Lambert at the I Heart Radio Festival in Las Vegas and six dates before that previously?
A. It was a one-off but it went really fantastically well. He's really come on even more. He's a real dark force now. And he's very theatrical. And he really interprets our songs just brilliantly. And he has that incredible instrument, that voice and I feel he's going away from the pop thing which is good I think. And he's becoming a serious player. He's got a voice which is pretty unbeatable. I do think we will be working with Adam next year, yeah.

It made me pull up this Adam interview from July 16, 2013 on Ryan Seacrest’s radio program….
Adam said he has been “writing music like a crazy person. I’m in love with rock n’ roll again. I feel like there’s such a change happening in the music scene. People are playing instruments again. This whole thing with Queen has been really inspiring. I’m gonna kinda revisit my rock n’ roll roots again–the things that made me wanna audition for Idol in the first place. That’s been my inspiration.” Here is the full interview.

I do not expect Adam’s next album to be a rock & roll album but I do hope there are more "real" instruments, less reliance on synth layers and automated percussion, and that he continues to explore blues-based music – rock, R&B and funk. And, most of all, I hope that Adam truly unleashes his “dark force”.
You may be excited for more QAL or you may think it is the last thing you want to see Adam doing. But either way, you should be excited about how much Adam appears to be gaining from the experience and how happy it makes him to work with Brian and Roger. Listen to his recent performance of WWFM from the TrevorLIVE, a song every Adam fan knows backwards and forwards, and tell me that it is not different. I find it more relaxed and confident, and more emotionally powerful than WWFM has been in the past.
My Dream Queen + Adam Lambert Concert
What should Queen + Adam Lambert perform?
12.16.13 by Q3
Now, that it appears eminent that QAL will return in 2014 for a “string of live events”, I wanted to send my message to the Universe. There are quite a few songs I really want to hear Queen + Adam Lambert perform that they have not tackled yet. Most Queen-watchers expect the 2014 Queen + Adam Lambert concerts will have a setlist similar to Hammersmith. I am hopeful that we get some surprises, but I would love a lot of surprises.
July 14, 2012 Hammersmith Apollo Setlist
There were minor variations between the three Hammersmith Setlists but July 14, 2012 contained all the songs with Adam on lead vocals. Brian sang TSMGO on July 11 and STL on July 12; Adam sang both on July 14. You're My Best Friend was performed by Brian only on July 14.
1. Flash (Intro) (no Adam)
2. Seven Seas of Rhye
3. Keep Yourself Alive
4. We Will Rock You (Fast)
5. Fat Bottomed Girls
6. Don’t Stop Me Now
7. Under Pressure (Roger/Adam duet)
8. I Want It All
9. Somebody to Love
10. Who Wants to Live Forever
11. A Kind of Magic (Roger)
12. These Are the Days of Our Lives (Roger)
13. You're My Best Friend (Brian)
14. Love of My Life (Brian)
15. '39 (Brian)
16. Dragon Attack
17. Drum Battle/Guitar Solo (no Adam)
18. I Want to Break Free
19. Another One Bites the Dust
20. Radio Ga Ga
21. Crazy Little Thing Called Love
22. The Show Must Go On
23. Bohemian Rhapsody
24. Encore: Tie Your Mother Down (Brian)
25. Encore: We Will Rock You
26. Encore: We Are the Champions
Hammersmith #3 had a 26-song setlist with Adam singing lead on 19. I thought it was too short! My dream setlist has 30 songs, 2 reprises and a instrumental section, with Adam singing lead on 21 songs and 2 reprises. (And not back-to-back performances.)
I also added an Adam Lambert cover to my setlist. I have read some skeptics' comments who say Queen will never cover an Adam Lambert song, I disagree. Q+PR performed two Paul Rodger’s covers: “Bad Company” a Bad Company cover and “All Right Now” a Free cover. So I believe an Adam cover is possible with the right song. Adam does not have the "right song" on his first two albums BUT since I think Adam is shift a bit on A3 and this is MY DREAM setlist, I have included the mythical A3 track that features Brian May on guitar – a pop-rock track that does not exist but that I want.
So what will they play?
I tried to be a bit realistic. We know they will perform the 5 big US hits, so they are on the list. I even included a reprise of two of them:
1. We Will Rock You
2. We Are the Champions
3. Another One Bites the Dust (Their biggest US hit.)
4. Bohemian Rhapsody
5. Crazy Little Thing Called Love
They will retain these two very famous songs that were almost Top 10 in the US and big hits elsewhere:
6. Somebody to Love (1976 UK #2, US #13/#9)
7. Under Pressure (1981 UK #1 song, US #29/#22)
And there will certainly be some “no Adam” songs again and these songs or similar songs make lots of sense:
8. These Are the Days of Our Lives (Roger)
9. You're My Best Friend (Brian)
10. Love of My Life (Brian)
11. '39 (Brian)
12. Drum Battle/Guitar Solo
13. Tie Your Mother Down (Brian)
14. Keep Yourself Alive (Brian)
There is one must-include song that Adam could shift to sing backup on so I did not count that as an Adam song in his “quota”.
15. Seven Seas of Rhye (Brian with Adam singing back-up)
There are some songs that are really excellent “Adam Lambert” songs that he has already performed with Queen:
16. Who Wants to Live Forever
17. I Want It All
18. The Show Must Go On
19. I Want to Break Free (QAL performed this in Kiev, and now that he has worked with Queen a bit more, I think it will be even better.)
There is one song that Roger sang in London, that I would love to hear Adam sing – I think he could do justice to its innate theatricality. So I moved it to Adam on lead.
20. A Kind of Magic (1986)
Finally, there are some Queen songs that QAL has not performed, and I really want to hear QAL perform them. Most of these choices need little explanation, however, I included videos just to illustrate my selections.
21. "White Queen (As It Began)" (1974)
22. “The March of the Black Queen” (1973)
Note: They will need to use backing tapes for this or have some backup singers. I prefer backing tapes.
23. Killer Queen (1974) This has been on my “I hope Adam sings it” list since Idol! And hope springs eternal! Maybe this year!
24. Hammer to Fall (1984) I would love to hear Adam's take on this hard driving rock song. Here is the Queen performance from Live Aid.
25. Body Language (1982) I believe this is the most famous Queen dance track. This Freddie Mercury composition was ahead of its time and seems to have been forgotten. I believe Queen has not performed it since 1982. It was a big radio and club hit in the US, but not a major hit in the UK. But it got no love from rock fans. One not-so-clever rock critic said it sounded like the soundtrack to a gay porn film. The music video was so “adult” that MTV refused to broadcast it. I could not find a copy of the too hot for MTV music video on You Tube but here is a link to the official music video: www.metrolyrics.com/body-language-queen-ml-video-exh.html
The Freddie Mercury words and music could have been written yesterday for a Rihanna or JT album:
Give me your body
Give me your body body
Give me your body
Don't talk don't talk don't talk don't talk
Baby don't talk
Body language
Body language
Body language
Give me your body
Just give me, yeah, your body
Give me, yeah, your body
Don't talk
Body language huh huh
Body language
Body language
You got red lips snakes in your eyes
Long legs great thighs
You got the cutest ass I've ever seen
Knock me down for a six any time
Look at me I gotta case of body language
Look at me I gotta case of body language
Look at me I gotta case of body language
Look at me I gotta case of body language
Of body language
Of body language
Yeah sexy body sexy sexy body
I want your body
Baby you're hot
Body language x9
There is live audio of the live performances online but the quality is not great. I could not find any video of this song. So here is the album track:
26. These Are the Days of Our Lives (1991) [OK I posted the entire lyrics just so I could bold “roller coaster ride”.]
Sometimes I get to feelin'
I was back in the old days - long ago
When we were kids, when we were young
Things seemed so perfect - you know?
The days were endless, we were crazy - we were young
The sun was always shinin' - we just lived for fun
Sometimes it seems like lately - I just don't know
The rest of my life's been - just a show.
Those were the days of our lives
The bad things in life were so few
Those days are all gone now but one thing is true -
When I look and I find I still love you.
You can't turn back the clock, you can't turn back the tide
Ain't that a shame?
I'd like to go back one time on a roller coaster ride
When life was just a game
No use sitting and thinkin' on what you did
When you can lay back and enjoy it through your kids
Sometimes it seems like lately I just don't know
Better sit back and go - with the flow
Cos these are the days of our lives
They've flown in the swiftness of time
These days are all gone now but some things remain
When I look and I find - no change
Those were the days of our lives yeah
The bad things in life were so few
Those days are all gone now but one thing's still true
When I look and I find, I still love you,
I still love you.
27. I'm Going Slightly Mad (1991) (It would be a nice mash-up with “Cuckoo” but that is not on my setlist! I have big dreams but I'm not that crazy )
Finally, I want QAL to do a rock & roll cover medley like they did in the early 70’s. And since I am “from” Tupelo, MS (Elvis' hometown), it must include an Elvis cover…Jailhouse Rock.
28. Rock & Roll Medley: Jailhouse Rock/Be Bop A Lula. Just for fun, here is the Queen - Rock & Roll Medley - Hammersmith 1974. This video captures a bit of Freddie's stage personality.
There are three songs from Hammersmith (and many other Queen concerts) that I could live without. I am pretty sure all three will be part of any Queen concert, but two are not on my dream setlist:
29. “Radio Ga Ga" (1984) – this is a great live song but something had to be cut here and there – so I put a small bit into the Encore #2. (Yes, my Dream Concert has 2 encores.)
• Fat Bottomed Girls
• Tie Your Mother Down
Finally, there is one song that Adam loves that I and some Adam fans have seen a lot since it was in the Queen shows and is a cover he performs in his concerts. I have dropped it, because there are other Queen songs I want to hear him sing.
• Dragon Attack
But Adam is OK with the drop because of Encore #1.
My Dream QAL Returns Setlist
1. Bohemian Rhapsody (it was a great intro in Las Vegas, just the intro of the song)
2. WWRY (fast, intro, small section of the song)
3. White Queen (As It Began)
4. The March of the Black Queen
5. Seven Seas of Rhye (Adam only on back-up)
6. Killer Queen
A section with just Queen no Adam
7. These Are the Days of Our Lives (Roger)
8. You're My Best Friend (Brian)
9. Love of My Life (Brian)
10. '39 (Brian)
Adam returns
11. I Want to Break Free
12. Hammer to Fall
13. Crazy Little Thing Called Love
14. A Kind of Magic
15. Under Pressure (Adam and Roger)
A break without Adam
16. Drum Battle/Guitar Solo
17. Tie Your Mother Down (Brian)
18. Keep Yourself Alive (Brian)
Adam returns to the stage
19. Who Wants to Live Forever
20. Crazy Little Thing Called Love
21. Hammer to Fall
22. I Want It All
23. Somebody to Love (Brian lead/Adam on backup harmony)
24. Body Language
25. These Are the Days of Our Lives
26. I'm Going Slightly Mad
27. Bohemian Rhapsody (reprise, full song)
28. The Show Must Go On
Encore #1
29. A3 album song (Adam Lambert cover, intro by Brian)
30. Rock & Roll Medley: Jailhouse Rock (Elvis cover)/Be Bop A Lula (Gene Vincent cover)
Encore #2
31. Another One Bites the Dust (Brian)
32. Radio Gaga (short version, Roger)
33. We Will Rock You (reprise)/We Are the Champions
I know that this is not going to happen BUT if it did, I think it would go down as one of the most epic Queen concerts ever. And it would truly answer the question Brian May asked on Twitter “What does it mean to BE Queen?”

Some Christmas specials are naughty and some are nice but Glee has lost the plot
December 16, 2013 12:00AM (Sun Herald, Melbourne, Australia)
IT'S always depressing when great TV shows drag on just that bit too long. The fans hang in there, waiting, hoping that it might get better. But it never does.
ER didn't recover from the loss of Doug, Carol or Dr Green. The OC failed to transition to college. Grey's Anatomy has been treating the proverbial shark like a skipping rope, most recently when they tried to explain away Arizona's cheating with, "Oh, but they tried to have a baby that one time last year, but we forgot to tell you about it until just now, because, well, reasons".
It's hard to tell when Glee irrevocably jumped the shark. Was it early in season one when Mr Shue's wife faked her pregnancy? Or when they felt they needed to justify Sue's character by ruining her and then randomly making her have a baby? Or when they decided that Brittany was really a genius so they could get rid of Heather Morris?
Whenever the first nail was hammered into the coffin, the recent Christmas episode was the last. There is no coming back from that. While I and many others will continue to watch, it's more for the songs, Naya Rivera and the fascinating inability to look away from such a train wreck than for the actual story.
….
But this year was depressingly awful. Sure, since the introduction of the suckier Glee Club members, the show has been pretty bad, but this was worse. Acknowledging that the 2013 Glee episodes have been among the worst ever (with the exception of the episode with Adam Lambert and Demi Lovato), they set this episode in 2012 and just tried too hard to be controversial. What made the show great, back when it was great, was its ability to offend everyone while making minorities feel like they belonged. But this year they tried so hard to shock delicate American sensibilities that it was just offensive to anyone who likes stories or consistent characterisation. Yes, the costumes were good, but eye candy will get you only so far. You might be able to scrub clothes on Sexy Santa's abs but, until the show gets some of its competent writers back, there's really no point.

Fashion Fails: Adam Lambert, Paula Abdul, Kristen Bell, More

It's Fashion Fail Time! That means we take a break from letting you know how good all of your favorite stars look to show the other side of fashion: the fails!
Adam Lambert's suit could be trying to show cherry blossoms on a cloudy day, but from here it just looks gross. Plus, he buttoned up and didn't wear a tie.
