I just tried to do a search for information on when genre lines became so important in radio play and hit popularity but nothing appropriate came up. Perhaps it is just that I was not particularly observant as a teenager, but I don't remember songs and radio play being so genre divided. Roy Orbison and Elvis and Johnny Cash all coexisted on the same radio station and pop list. So I never really thought of Roy as western and Elvis not....I just loved them all... It isn't until much later that I became really aware of the different genres....and the type casting of each genre's listening choices. Now there is a whole schemata around each musical genre and heaven forbid we should admit liking or not, competing genres.....when did that all happen? Anybody any expertise in this area? Not an expert but I think radio was diversified (genre-wise) through part of the 1960s. Peter, Paul, and Mary were played alongside the Beatles and the Supremes. Something definitely happened. I like listening to a mix.

There were still not distinct genres when I was coming up (the 80s). There were only three genres -- pop/rock, country, and r&b. I believe the splintering occurred in the early 90s when Top 40 radio fell apart. My understanding is limited but from what I've read it came about from a combination of competition from MTV (which weakened the hold of radio as a way to discover new music), the Walkman (the first device that gave users the power to control what they heard any time), and the deregulation of radio stations (which led to many more stations that had to be filled up with programming).

Happycat mentioned "writing camps" being used to put together songs for Rihanna's albums. So I just want to mention that THE NEW YORKER magazine recently (within the last year or so) published an excellent article on how song writers are assembled in camps to pump out songs for Rihanna. As Rihanna does a new cd just about every year, these camps are held on an annual basis. This is also the article that claimed it took about $1,000,000 to get out (write, promote, etc) the first single off an album.
From what I remember, there is ONE BIG DIFFERENCE between these camps and the one that Max Martin has put together for Adam in Sweden. Adam is there, he is present, and is, from what we know, an ACTIVE participant. Per TNY article, Rihanna did not attend the writing camps for her albums, did not participate in writing the songs or have any input into the process.
Participation or not, I just wish Adam could come out of his camp with a great song like "Rihanna's" STAY.

And the New Yorker also did a big piece in Dr Luke...

I was hoping Adam would do a song with this guy. I love STAY...especially after Adam made it his own.

OK....Nile......you are teasing us again!! TALCvids @talcvids 6m Nile Rodgers Confesses He Has An Unreleased Adam Lambert Collab In The Can onepopz.com/nile-rodgers-confesses-unreleased-adam-lambert-collab-can/ … via @onepopz
Funk legend Nile Rodgers is teasing all of us Glamberts.
Nile is pulling our glittery chains, and holding out on us.
Seems the Chic star and legendary producer has an unreleased collab in the can, featuring Adam Lambert and chartbusting Swedish DJ Avicii.
Previously the trio teamed up to lay down the song “Lay Me Down,” for Avicii’s debut LP.
And now, Nile has admitted there’s more music out there, that fans of the three musicians haven’t heard. He posted on Twitter:
“Just had a great chat with @adamlambert in Sweden, about one of the awesome unreleased songs we wrote w @avicii – Yeah!”
Meanwhile, another Swedish musician has admitted she’s recently been working with Adam, in the recording studio.
Swedish singer-songwriter Tove Lo confessed to Billboard that she and Adam have been laying down tracks together, while Adam’s been in Europe.
“He came to Sweden,” she said. “He’s been working with all the producers, the little collective out there, and having a really good time.”
As to what the collab sounded like, or whether it would appear on Adam’s upcoming album, Lo remained mum.
She did reveal that “when you hear the fully produced stuff from the studio, that’s one thing. But his voice is INSANE. I couldn’t believe it!”

This is totally as far as I know only wishful thinking.....but Q3, have you been whispering wishes into Memphis djs ears? LOL
FROM IDF: WITH GRAIN OF SALT! "A Memphis dj on one of our rock stations said he heard that after this first leg of the tour, Queen will hit some of the southern states. I hope he knows what he's talking about."
