There are 81 days until Chicago…and the question I have been thinking about is what will Adam sing on this tour?

Assuming they change out a few songs during the tour, and do 22 – 24 unique songs a night (excluding the guitar and drum solos), there could be around 30 songs performed in these concerts. And hopefully, I get a lot of them in my countdown. But that won’t be easy -- the Queen catalog is so big, the potential cover list is almost a universe, and there is a chance that they could also decide to perform an Adam song.

I have been using the 80's in this countdown to profile some of the more unusual Queen tracks. Most have little or no chance of making the setlist. Today's countdown song, does have a chance and would be a real treat for Queen fans. 


#81 “Spread Your Wings" (1978)
Written by John Deacon.
Released October 27, 1977 on New Of The World; limited release as a single on February 10, 1978.

This is a great Queen song that seems to have been forgotten even though Queen performed it regularly from 1977 through 1979. It remains a Queen fan favorite and is reported to be one of John Deacon’s favorite Queen songs. It was released as the #2 single from News Of The World in the UK Germany, Netherlands, France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Belgium, Ireland, Brazil, and possibly Poland.. An alternate #2 single It's Late / Sheer Heart Attack was released in the USA (no 74), Japan, Canada and New Zealand. Both singles were follow-ups to We Will Rock You/We Are The Champions (October 7, 1977).

It is a theatrical power ballad with uplifting lyrics and a gorgeous guitar break. It seems a lot like a duet between the vocalist and the lead guitar but it is actually a vocal solo and the first Queen single that does not incorporate vocal harmonies.

It is a very hard song to sing (try it for yourself, see below.) but I think Adam voice would just soar if he sang it. It is one of several Queen singles that require someone to hit very high, strong notes.

Here is a great description from Wikipedia:

"Spread Your Wings" is a power ballad by Queen, from their 1977 album News of the World. Written by bassist John Deacon, it was released as the A side of the single Spread Your Wings/Sheer Heart Attack in 1978. It features Deacon on bass, Freddie Mercury on piano and vocals, Brian May on guitar and Roger Taylor on drums. A live version of the song appears in the band's 1979 album Live Killers. The song peaked at number 34 in the UK.

The song is in 4/4 meter, and starts with a simple piano motif in D. It is written in D Major, then modulating up to D's relative minor, B minor in the bridge, coming down to D in the chorus.

The lyrics of the song describe a troubled young man named Sammy who works at The Emerald Bar, sweeping the floor. The narrator (Mercury) of the song encourages Sammy to pursue his dreams, telling him to "spread your wings and fly away".

As with most Queen songs, there are a number of version of “Spread Your Wings”. I am partial to the 1977 BBC Session and the Paris 1979 concert recording. The Jazz Tour (Paris 1979) performance shows some of the vocal changes Freddie was regularly making at that point because he was starting to have some vocal issues but I always like the spirit and style of that tour.

The music video is does not reflect the performances on the recording: The piano is played by Freddie Mercury, although John Deacon mimes it in the music video. And Roger Taylor can be seen singing in the video despite the fact that there are no backing vocals in the song.

The music video was filmed in drummer Roger Taylor's garden in Surrey, England in 1978. The ground was covered in snow and ice, and the band was noticeably uncomfortable. Brian May remarks in the making of video, "looking back, it couldn't be done there - you couldn't do that!" During the shoot, the ice and snow on the ground complicated matter, and according to interviews Freddie Mercury consumed more alcohol than he probably should have.

Brain May played a copy of his Red Special in the video due to the cold weather conditions.
