mmadamimadamm @mmadamimadamm 2m OMG! Guys! Watch this! @thinkprogress: UPDATE: Emotional video of the moment Michael Sam found out he was drafted thkpr.gs/1ohunjf ”
... Sam, who was named the SEC Defensive Player of the Year in 2013, went as the 249th pick. He is only the second person ever to hold that title and fall out of the top 33 picks of the NFL draft. The other was Chad Lavalais of Louisiana State University, who was picked 142nd back in in 2004. Before the draft, CBS had Sam’s prospect ranking at 169. If Sam went so late in the draft because teams were concerned about the unwanted attention that selecting the first gay player, they did not seem to be concerned about such impressions across the board; Zach Mettenberger, who plead guilty to sexual battery after groping a woman outside of a bar, went second in the sixth round of the draft. Prince Shembo, who was investigated in connection with the sexual assault of a woman who soon after committed suicide, was the 139th pick.
Now that Sam has been drafted, he will move onto the next challenge of securing a spot on the roster. He’ll need to make the team over the summer to become the first openly gay player actively in the NFL, and his spot isn’t guaranteed. more... in other words - we have long way to go!

The Eurovision song contest voting was and is still very political Well, it was when only the jurys voted - a little less now that the public can vote too. Even now close neighbours or allies get highest marks but I think it's only natural that the taste in music is a bit similar between neighbours. Austria's song is good. It even got some points from the east based on the music, as it should be. (Don't remember from where and don't know if they actually got to see the performance or was it sensored there.) In Copenhagen there were manifestations today for freedom. The audience cheered loudly for Austria (and Ukraine) and booed when Russia got points. (Well done young Russian twins who managed to keep smile on their face nevertheless, it's not their fault.) Austria's song was good and it is great that the political atmosphere in Europe is inclusive and people all over Europe voted for Conchita. Congratulations!!! I didn't mean to discount her win at all. After all, the country I came from won the 1998 Eurovision with a similar liberal inclusive political point (and a good song of course : Dana International with Viva La Diva www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fv83u7-mNWQ

Of course we have a long way to go for 'equality for all people' with many challenges long the way but, for me, today gives me hope that we are on the right path to that goal and I celebrate this progress. Micheal Sam has the same opportunity as everybody else drafted today to try to make their selective teams' rosters. I celebrate this!
