I'm older and I definitely thought it was a derogatory term. I have a hard time using it but if it's all right with members of LGBT community it's alright with me. I'll get used to it eventually. it is. I hate when groups use the derogatory terms and try to make them harmless. IMHO if the words would just not be used as the population grows older the young ones would never know or use them. Lurker popping in to say that the trend towards reappropriating the "queer" term isn't new. The trend actually started in the 80s or 90s, depending who you ask, and the community has basically succeeded in its reappropriation. Many LGBT groups now actually go by LGBTQIA to encompass more shades of sexuality. T stands for transgender, Q is used for questioning and/or queer, I is for intersex and A can represent asexual or ally. Here's more info: www.nytimes.com/2013/01/10/fashion/generation-lgbtqia.html?pagewanted=allYou'll find academic departments that are called "Gender and Queer Studies." It's pretty much a self-identifying term. I'd never approach a gay man or lesbian and call them "queer" but talking about the "queer community" is not uncommon parlance. I can't remember the last time I've heard the term used in a derogatory way. I think the f-word insult is still in the middle ground. It's used in the gay community in an attempt of reappropriation but is also still largely used as an insult.

I fought hard with my sons to ensure they did not use these words and for them to fully understand what they meant. Not just the gay community but in general. I knew a great glow of pride when I overheard one of my sons tell his friend not to use a certain word and he explained why. and again when one son came home from school all indignant that his health class teacher had used the correct words for the male anatomy and street words for the female anatomy. Adam uses some words that I wish he would not, but the context that he uses them in are so different I just don't know...

Toramenor, I forgot to thank you for promoting EXIT a few days ago, sorry It was a really nice post. So, thank you! Where are you from, by the way? I remember thinking when I saw the post that you must be from somewhere around here. No need to thank me - my older brother was a student at the University of Novi Sad in 2000, when EXIT began as a student movement/music festival, and I went in 2001 (he let his 17-year-old little sister tag along with him and his friends, so sweet ). I went again a couple of times over the years (couldn't afford to go every year) and in 2012 I even got a job there so I had an all-access pass and got to hang out with some really cool people. So, I have lots of personal history with EXIT and people who are involved. I'm from Serbia, too, like you I'm currently living (and working) in Novi Sad, though hopefully not for long. I'm moving abroad next year. Don't get me wrong: I love the city of Novi Sad, but my life is elsewhere

April Marie aprilmarie816 6m If you're at Philly show and want merch they have some outside (broad at north side) before the show! ????????It was legit! Never saw that happen at a concert before. But thought some might have wanted to avoid lines inside
