Golly, y'all. I posted and ran because I'm a wimp, and I was a little nervous I was making a mess (and maybe I was ), but you're all lovely and kind, and your responses are much appreciated. Basically, we all just think the world of Adam and want the best for him.
Adam could never be mediocre/so-so and he will always strive for great success but no one knows what Adam's idea of great success is.
Thanks, glitter, for explaining in better words what I put a little carelessly in my earlier post. To clarify: I have no doubt that Adam's current goal is to be a mainstream radio success, with lots of album sales and the means to finance a large-scale tour (not sure about the stadiums bit). He's on a major label, he has great support both in the industry and from his fan base, why not aim for that? But I'm sure he's also a total realist about the business he's in, and I in no way equate "mediocre" sales (whatever that means in this day and age) with mediocrity of any other sort, and I doubt Adam would, either. I'm confident there are many paths to professional happiness for Adam, and I am also confident that he has the talent, people-skills, practicality, and all-around good sense to make a rousing success of himself, and there are many ways to measure that. Opportunity of one sort or another will always follow Adam around, because it's not actually following him: he's leading it firmly by the hand. He will end up happy and making music no matter what.

I don't think MWP is saying that Adam would be happy and satisfied being mediocre but Adam is savvy enough to understand the business side of music and therefore he is fully aware that it is about more than the quality of the music, it is also about luck and timing, neither thing he can control so as long as he is satisfied with the music he puts forth for his fans he will be satisfied creatively. Adam could never be mediocre/so-so and he will always strive for great success but no one knows what Adam's idea of great success is.
