Before I dive into it, I mentioned that sometimes his vibrato sounds like fluttering (I don't even know, it makes sense in my head!) and it stands out to me on the acoustic Sleepwalker he did in Zurich. It honestly gives me chills & stops me in my tracks everytime - when he sings "feel" at 1:56 but especially on "meeeee" at 2:05. It's just so perfect & beautiful. Sorry, idk how to embed but it's here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=d-9I2TbwwtY I think you and I are responding to the same thing with Adam's vibrato. Singers with a straight tone with no vibrato sound unfinished and dull to me. Singers with a broad and slow vibrato leave me uncomfortable because it almost sounds off pitch. Adam has a "just right" vibrato for my taste. Sometimes almost unnoticeable, like a flutter or a sympathetic vibration rather than a wobble. Enough to warm the tone, but not so much as to sound affected. Um, how far into music theory do you want to go??? It is basically in C minor. More specifically it is based on the C minor pentatonic scale (C Eb F G Bb C). The minor pentatonic scale is used a lot in blues. (Those of you reading who haven't studied music theory, just skip over those two sentences. It just means that the notes commonly used sound very bluesy.) Adam's highest note is G5, twelve steps above middle C. (the upper end of the range for many female mezzo sopranos). Translated, he sings a wicked high note that many women can't reach. Adam excels at runs and riffs (melismas) in his songs. Some (Randy) claim he sometimes goes too far off the melody line, but, like you, I find that his runs keep within the scale, the key and the rhythm of the song. The only times I noticed he faltered were when he first started doing 20th Century Boy, and the first Purple Haze. He was still finding his way within the song. But a couple more times through and he had it down. I know what you mean. But I find most of the time his musicality and technique make it sound so right and so effortless that I can just relax and let the sound flow over me. Then, someone will ask a great question on this forum and I am into analyzing what the hell he is doing, and it is like doing a puzzle. Fun!

Cassie, I just reread-- slowly-- your breakdown of Aftermath and Soaked. Worth it.
And I love the vibrato discussion.. Adam's vibrato is one of the things that "pings" my ears and I almost physically react to it. It is subtle enough to not distract in an annoying way (like sheep or goat bleating)... and yet I would miss it tremendously if it weren't there.
BTW, I have LOVED My Conviction with a passion ever since I discovered it shortly after I found Adam. He really is a masterclass singer.

So, I've been watching bits and pieces of AI this season... usually I'm busy doing something else, and have one eye/one ear on the TV, and the rest of my attention is elsewhere. But I think it was last night that this Jacob Lusk kid comes on and does his little solo, and he's so emotionally caught up in everything he ends up bursting into tears, and I swear to @god, I almost burst into tears, too!
The reason I'm posting this here, is because of his high notes! I believe he's actually "singing" those high notes, not screaming. Am I wrong? And omg he gets incredibly low, too! But one thing I noticed was how he sort of gulps/gasps for breath, and I wondered if this was simply because he was so emotional, or if it's just lack of training? I've never heard Adam breathe like this during his crazy rock wailing. Anyhow, I love this kid, and would appreciate your opinion, Cassie!

The low notes aren't really that low, but they have this rich, gospel Porgy and Bess sound to them. Not as crazy about his high notes. No, they are not screaming or belting, I think they are falsetto. A little shrill to me, but well sung and on pitch. I may have to look him up on YT and see if I can hear other styles. As to the breathing, it could be stylistic, could be he doesn't have the classical type of technique for breathing. In any case, this guy is surprisingly good compared to what I have heard on Idol recently. Hope he can do other styles, and that he goes far.

Cassie I remember thinking during the FS WLL that some of the runs and riffs that he did were like whale song. There is something incredibly emotional and moving about whale song and there were moments during that performance especially that took me back to the first time I heard whale song. Do you hear that similarity and is there some particular quality to what he is doing that invites that comparison?

Wow seoulmate. Thank you. I was going to post that video of Jacob after I saw his performance. It really moved me too and I wanted cassie and the other experts' opinions on the quality and technical stuff. I hope he stays and I hope that was not a one off performance of a song he has done many times. I'm really looking forward to his interpretations of other songs and genres. Artists who really feel the music and show me that they do take me right there with them.

Since it seems i can post here something for AI now that we dont have a special thread for this i would like to share my favorite contestant. I also said this back at ATOP when i first listened to his audition where he celebrated with a melodica his 3 yes's.I said he is my fav from all this season. I dont know if they got him through i havent watched this episode yet, please dont tell me if he made it or not. I dont know if he has the perfect voice or the perfect pitch but i got chills all over my body with his audition and today with this interpretation i'm blown away. You see to me not always is about the perfect voice it's what he can make me feel.
And here is his audition if anyone is interested.I love love love him.

There are many vocal styles in music that I enjoy. This guy did some NICE bluesy jazz stylin'. His is not a classically trained voice --- doesn't have to be for the music he is doing. He has a great feel for jazz at age 19. And I was seriously impressed with his bass playing. Again, I don't know if he can cross genres, but from what I have heard about some of the changes they are making this season, there may be less of that, allowing contestants to stay with the style that suits them best. Damn! I may have to set my DVR for Idol again.

There is something incredibly emotional and moving about whale song and there were moments during that performance especially that took me back to the first time I heard whale song. Do you hear that similarity and is there some particular quality to what he is doing that invites that comparison? Okay, this is one of the more out of the box comparisons I have read on this forum. Whale song??? Reallly??? Damn!! You are RIGHT! Adam sings whale song! I can hear the resemblance strongly in 2:15 to about 3"45. He does not sing a melody or an extended phrase or lyrics. It is just a series of short notes and lines, almost random, up in his mid register, back in his low register, swooping up to notes, swirling around the notes, swooping back down. Even the little almost grunt to start the note which sounds like the little mini explosion of breath/note of the whales. Add to that the substantial reverb of the mic and it sounds like the whale song echoing in the water. Haven't heard whale song? An other worldly experience. www.youtube.com/watch?v=WabT1L-nN-EAnd an other worldly song from Judy Collins using whale song as accompaniment. www.youtube.com/watch?v=qV29xK2xyZ4
