How the hell he can hold the notes while bending all the way back at the end? He's an alien from the Planet Fierce, that's how! ;D Folks have said he must have an extra set of lungs for some of his sustained notes and phrases, but I think he must have steel embedded in his abdominal muscles and diaphragm to have the breath support for this. Or circular breathing--except only wind players do that. :dunno:

I believe he mentioned that he did take band (maybe in middle school) briefly and I think he said he played French Horn or something like that so maybe he did learn a little about circular breathing and incorporated it in to his singing arsenal.

But circular breathing while singing is impossible, isn't it? :dunno: I mean, I might be wrong, but circular breathing works storing air in your cheeks, right? Then, you breath in through your nose to fill up your lungs while using that air to keep playing the instrument. You can't do that to sing, the vocal chords aren't outside your body. :dunno: Nationalglampoon, thanks for telling me your story! I think we all have had that moment of "OH WOW SO AMAZING IHTUITWGRGSWG" when it comes to Adam. Mine came with Queenbert, and after that with Trespassing. I still haven't listened to all the songs in FYE. I wanna buy it, but I still haven't gotten around to do it.

I love how his low register sounds here too. Not as good as studio but stronger than it usually is live. This clip is such a good display of his range in such a short time too

This clip is such a good display of his range in such a short time too Just curious.. can he make the low register sound 'better' than this live if he really wants to? Cuz sometimes I really don't understand him.. He uses his voice to speak his mood...many times his voice sounds very different to me even singing the same notes and words. I've heard many people said they prefered his vocal back in FYE era or the AI era, esp. the high notes.. I think his voice is highly sensitive and very expressive and sometimes just beyond pure technological or professional vocal terms ... I dunno, this is how I feel about his voice.. sophisticated... :-/

Well I think when he sings high for a long time the low notes get harder to bring out, I think that's why he "wound down" so to speak with WWFM before he'd sing acoustic Aftermath.
I like all eras of his voice, personally I don't watch the live Idol performances much cause I hate the vocal dry feed a lot, but the studio performances are his best vocal performances ever to me. If we're talking live performances FYE era was my favourite, you never knew what he was going to do vocally on any given night and it was so over the top and exciting :2tears: I also think the vocal coach he had back then really brought out the best in his voice. I mean he always sounds amazing but his voice just had some kind of extra kick during GNT that I hadn't heard before or since. Maybe I'm imagining it idk :-[

Oh, goodie...discussion about the VH1 promo bits. I posted on the thread that the 'throat coat' vid astounds me. Adam just stalks that mic and hits THAT NOTE! Help me out...have no idea what note it is, I know he has sung it before. But he doesn't lead up into it..he just belts it. Full tilt, on pitch. BAM! I see that as difficult for a vocalist to achieve. Such control.
I'd love feedback from those of you more versed in music..anyone??? That vid blows me away. And it's really not so much about how 'high' the note is, altho I'd be interested. But I am truly wondering about the mechanics of such a thing.
Adam also holds his glory note for like..ever...in another of the vids. Anyone want to talk about breath control? I'm all ears.
Thanks!

Reading nationalglampoon's post just makes me wonder - does Adam ever use a vocal coach when he's NOT on tour? Would there be any benefit to him to do so? I have no idea - do do professional classically trained singers consult a vocal coach occasionally?
.... (not a question, just musing aloud) And I wonder if on his next tour whether he would have one to work with not just for his technique, but also to tweak the musical direction and reduce any strain on his voice... I vaguely recall reading an article about something to that effect during the GNT.

Breathtaking vocals, especially for anyone who has not heard Adam except maybe WWFM on the radio. The high sustained notes and the acrobatic runs are "diva" personified. The note is actually not that high....... for Adam. (Wicked high for most first class tenors in full-voice, as he does it. Not many can sing it.) But Adam happens to actually LIKE that key and that note in particular. He sings it frequently. It is an Eb5, a little more than an octave above middle C on the piano. As far as hitting it "out of the blue" without prep, I don't think he actually does that in the video. I am sure he warmed up, sang the riff multiple times, and the director/producer filmed it all and spliced together what s/he wanted for the promo. S/he may have even directed Adam to walk up to the mike and strike a pose as if he was singing, and they dubbed in the note they wanted later. CAN a singer of Adam's ability walk up to a mike and hit that note spot on, without working up to it? Absolutely. (I am nowhere near a professional singer's talent, but, after watching the video and then typing this, I tried to just open my mouth and hit the Eb5, and was able to do it.) The same goes for the sustain followed by the riff, apparently all in one breath. I have no doubt Adam COULD do that. He has the chops and the technique. (And, no, THAT I couldn't do. My breath control isn't nearly good enough, and I only have two lungs.) However, it seems likely to me that the director produced the sound he wanted from the multiple takes with some editing magic. I suspect that based on the fact that they show Adam in silhouette from the back thru much of it. It is probably easier to film what you want visually and record what you want on audio and then merge them instead of hoping for the perfect take of both at the same time. Not taking anything away from Adam's fabulousness. As I said, he is totally capable of singing that without any editing tricks. And I hope many people see the promos and are blown away. THAT, my friends, is what a true diva/divo sounds like.
