OT, you're warned. ;D Vivlite, I will let the vocal experts answer your very interesting questions, but what you said about the note on the throat coat video reminded me of José Andrëa, former vocalist of the most famous Hard Rock/Heavy Metal band in Spain. Like Adam, he's supposed to be a leggiero tenor (his vocal coaches mistook him for a countertenor at first, even) and he was discovered while he was working as a vocal coach for other aspiring singers. I won't embed the video because it's not Adam-related, but look at the first note: www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Y6gsB7kRJoI've seen him live, like, 5 or 6 times. He lost a lot of voice because of the long, neverending tours, unfortunately. And he has left the band because he was completely exhausted. I've heard he's in another band now, and his voice seems to have recovered nicely. I'm glad, he's a great frontman and one of the best voices in Spanish Rock. ETA: I see Cassie already answered your questions, she's so quick! It took me a while to post this, my internet connection is acting up... Ugh...

Oh, goodie...discussion about the VH1 promo bits. I posted on the thread that the 'throat coat' vid astounds me. Adam just stalks that mic and hits THAT NOTE! Help me out...have no idea what note it is, I know he has sung it before. But he doesn't lead up into it..he just belts it. Full tilt, on pitch. BAM! I see that as difficult for a vocalist to achieve. Such control. I'd love feedback from those of you more versed in music..anyone??? That vid blows me away. And it's really not so much about how 'high' the note is, altho I'd be interested. But I am truly wondering about the mechanics of such a thing. Adam also holds his glory note for like..ever...in another of the vids. Anyone want to talk about breath control? I'm all ears. Thanks! Okay now this is gonna be the ultimate party pooping analysis, so abandon hope all ye who enter here! I think most of the stuff in the VH1 promo is based on one sample by Adam, it's half way between D5 and E♭5, he holds it for a while then does a run down. The glass breaking video is the one I think the sample is taken from, BUT I think the super long note was extended by looping. I mean we've heard him do stuff like that naturally and live so I don't see why, but every now and then I hear a weird jumpy bit in the note which sounds to me like where they start a loop. In the "throat coat" vid, when he hits the note it doesn't sound like it would if he were to just belt it from nothing cause the articulation and stressed consonant you'd get from hitting a whole new note isn't there, that's cause it's (imo) the glass breaking note, which is part of a smooth scale. You splice in a note that was originally mid-scale and it just doesn't sound like a note from nothing. I do the love the vids, but I couldn't help noticing this stuff cause it just sounded odd to me. I might be wrong though 8-) ETA: Ninja'd by Cassie! albiku, that's an F♯5, sounds good :D Loads of metal/hard rock dudes do stuff like that and I love it.

About the Diva promo videos, I heard some little cuts on that sustained high note from the second video which made me think that it was a post production thing. Of course, Adam can do that on his own. He's done some pretty long notes and riffs before (the longest one we've heard was, what? 22 seconds?) But this time I agree with Cassie, I think he had a little bit of help. Aren't those videos just perfect, though? They are so Adam. I love them!   And people seem to like them too!       ETA: Glampoon, exactly. I called them little cuts, you called them jumpy bits.

There is a distinct sound in that which is missing from the beginning of that note on the video. He had to have already been singing and hit that note directly from another without stopping his breath in order for it to sound like it does.

We're ninja-ing each other here a lot. :4OMG: I love that kind of stuff too! I'm a rocker at heart, I've always been in that world. The majority of the concerts I've attended have been of metal/rock bands and vocalists.

Reading nationalglampoon's post just makes me wonder - does Adam ever use a vocal coach when he's NOT on tour? Would there be any benefit to him to do so? I have no idea - do do professional classically trained singers consult a vocal coach occasionally? .... (not a question, just musing aloud) And I wonder if on his next tour whether he would have one to work with not just for his technique, but also to tweak the musical direction and reduce any strain on his voice... I vaguely recall reading an article about something to that effect during the GNT. I have heard or read somewhere that Adam DOES continue to work with a vocal coach. Many trained singers do. It can be like a maintenance check up, to make sure they haven't fallen into any bad habits. Or the singer may be having problems with some specific technique/range/approach and need some help getting over it (like athletes frequently do when they hit a slump). Or, Adam may want to work on a new style or extend his ability to sing in a certain way, and seek out a coach who specializes in it. For example, if he wanted to do more lower register singing in concerts, I would imagine he would consult a coach to help him access that range quickly, strongly, and reliably. Or, if Adam ever accepted a dare to sing light opera for some charity event, (my secret fantasy) he would most certainly seek out an opera coach. Different coaches specialize in different techniques and styles. Adam KNOWS his voice is his bread and butter; the thing that sets him apart from everyone else in the industry. Hence, insuring it (which I am sure he has). When you have one of the best instruments in the world, or one of the best cars, or one of the best wines, you are very careful to protect it, nurture it, and keep in in pristine condition.

Cassie
I don't know if anyone has asked this before....
I was listening to the TP cd in my car this morning, trying to listen to the back up vocals.
Is it Adam singing the back up vocals on OOL? I can't tell. I hear his back up vocals on the other songs but OOL leaves me questioning whether it him or a female.

Albiku, that first note is awesome, reminds me of Rob Halford, one of my favorite vocalists. Thanks for the link, interesting. Rob is great. I'm glad you found it interesting. I only posted it because Vivlite asked about that high note Adam supposedly belted full tilt, perfect pitch in that Divas promo video (which Adam CAN do but didn't really do on that video according to our vocal experts). It made me think of José. He really is a great vocalist, great live frontman, very nice guy (I've met him). It's really sad that he has lost so much voice.
