ON a different note....someone just sent me this rework of REM and I thought I would pass it on for commentary, Cassie. The original: and then the 'new' version shifted from minor to major: Okay, now that is very weird. The song works so much better in the minor key, don't you think? It is haunting. The major key, not so much. I checked out their facebook page and they also did the Doors' "Riders on the Storm". Such a huge difference. Must say, I am much more attracted to the songs in the minor key. vimeo.com/24939393#

Okay, I am hiding my opinions about Beyonce's SSB and Kelly's MCTIT here in the masterclass thread.
Not crazy about the "pop" sound of either voice for these songs. They are NOT pop songs, they are not pop arrangements of the songs, and JMHO, they need singers with a more legitimate sound to their voices. In particular, Adam has spoiled me with his ability to seamlessly shift registers. Both girls flipped into head voice for some of the high notes, and the change was so noticeable and slightly jarring. The head voice just didn't have the power and ring to match the notes leading up to it, and sounded weak. Didn't work for those songs. It bugged me.
Did you notice that they didn't show the Marine Band playing at all during Beyonce? Not only did she lipsync, but, from the sound of the instrumental arrangement, I am pretty sure the whole thing was recorded and played back.
As for Kelly, the pop-y sound of her high notes in the last verse, starting at about 2:25 just diminished the power of the song. The band is playing huge, the words are huge, she is singing the verse up the octave, it should be pure and ringing. Yeah, that's my Adam bias again showing thru. But, the tone just had no depth or richness to it. She sang it convincingly and earnestly, and on pitch, but.... meh. I just would have preferred to have a more "classical" sounding voice on it.
YMMV

The major stuff is so cool. Might try it with an Adam song just cause. In the meantime, 5:14 here is so awesome: Holy shit! Is that a C6? D6? And that's head voice, isn't it? ETA: Taking out the video, since the site won't quote it right.

Damn, I started this long post to answer to Cassie and it disappeared. Ugh.
Anyway, Cassie:
Are we sure she was lip-synching? It doesn't look like it. It doesn't even sound like it. If she was, then she's freakishly good, and that's scary because she could lip-synch whenever she wanted without anyone noticing.
I thought both girls did a good job. They are pop singers, it was bound to sound pop-y. Not everyone can switch genres like Adam, lol. I wish we could see Adam singing those songs live on TV, in good quality. I would love to see what he does.
About SSB, maybe we could bring Adam's versions over here and talk about them?
Glampoon, I know it was reported that Adam could go pretty high in the soprano range, but do you think Adam could do what that guy did in your video? I'm not asking because I doubt his vocal ability or anything, I just want to know what you (and Cassie) think.

I think Adam only cares about if it really sounds cool in his standard.
ETA, glampoon, your CLYG in major key sounds really nice, it really changed the song a lot

I'm not asking because I doubt his vocal ability or anything, I just want to know what you (and Cassie) think. Is Beyonce lipsyncing? I was just going on what was being reported in the news media. Don't know what the original source was. But, after I wrote that I read an article about the BAND pretending to play, but not actually playing. Some of the members of the band were quite upset about having to fake it. It is possible that the media jumped to the conclusion that if the band was faking, Beyonce was also. When I watched I couldn't see any time that she did not match what I was hearing. But with that big microphone in front of her mouth it would be hard to tell. Actually, when I first watched it my impression was "Are they sure it is lipsyncing?" Cuz, it sounds live. What I noted in particular was that the very bottom notes were weak and without much tone. I thought it was odd that they would record it in a studio and not warm those notes up with a little magic, or have her re-sing them. The explanation about why the band was not live sounds strange to me. Why would it be hard for them to play with Beyonce live because they had not had sufficient rehearsal time? Huh? You record the band, and give the recording to Bey to practice with. Then, you play it like you did on the recording. No biggie. My impression of the band track was that it was fuller, with more instrumentation than the live band with Kelly. It sounded more symphonic and less like a Marine Band, if you know what I mean. Now, if they added instruments, or electronic enhancements to the arrangements, they may have opted to just used the recording, period. Sorta like Karaoke. Eh.... who knows. I was complaining about lipsyncing in public performances in general, not about Beyonce's particular performance. On the other topic, can Adam sing a C6 in head voice? If I had to place money on it, I would say "yes." We've heard him sing a Bb5, one step below that in what sounds to me like a full-voice, not just head voice. If he can do that, certainly he can go higher in pure head voice. It would be mind-blowing to hear. Not sure what other purpose it would serve, tho, other than doing it to show he can. Don't know what it would add to his interpretation of a song. If it had purpose, tho', BB could probably do it. And, probably would have by now, don't you think?
