Frankfurt! I have been to Frankfurt a couple of times (major airline hub) and have two specific memories. While it is an industrial city, it has a great art museum. I also had one of the best meals of my life there (who knew?). I have fond memories of Frankfurt for that reason -- and they have a cool train station. I wish I could be getting off a train there today to see Adam! Ah well, we'll have videos, streamers and photos soon.

Q3, I hope you don't mind that I brought this comment over from the Hamburg concert thread. I think cassie started a similar discussion a little while ago, but it was framed in terms of why the success now for the QAL project in the UK. There were some interesting responses in terms of Adam's growth (or even if Adam's growth was a contributing factor in the current success).

I think you're right - and that there are two equal parts to the puzzle (and maybe a third). First the baseline - that you cannot deliver an emotionally convincing performance if you haven't mastered the material. Once he could stop thinking about what he was performing, he was able to then access the emotional content of the songs more deeply. (His comment about winging it to start with and over-thinking).

Doing that was necessary but not sufficient. The second piece was about confidence. You can't connect deeply if you hesitate. Once he had mastered the material, he then could turn his focus outward and master how to perform in an arena and master very large audiences, which is a different skill set entirely. He didn't do it in the first six concerts in Europe - his AOBTD call and response for example, was like a deer caught in headlights. If he is uncomfortable, we feel it. I certainly felt it. Hammersmith were small concerts - about the same size as his own tour concerts. And I still felt his lack of complete ease there. He got stronger and stronger in the first leg of the tour. Then came the acceptance from the UK crowds.

AND, you're right, not only were those arenas large, but they were also chocka block full of Queen fans. Judging. It was a double whammy.

What's interesting about Adam's path as a performer is that it has been one where he has had to constantly overcome obstacles and prove himself - colleagues thinking he was not up to the task of a lead role on a cruise ship, being a chorus boy when he could easily have been the star, unable to get a record deal as a gay man in his mid twenties, coming second on Idol.

He seems to grow via obstacles - the bigger, the more rapid the growth, and it almost becomes a self-fulling prophecy that he puts himself in these situations over and over again. I think he actually likes grand personal challenges. And if that's the case, he has set himself up really well here. And I agree with you, he is now performing on a clearly different level.

I think that a big part of building his confidence has been the repetition of the thunderous applause he receives each time Brian asks the audience what they think. He could not help but be inspired by it and feel the love. Each night overcoming the skepticism after a few songs.

I also think he has been helped by having parts of the concerts that are his, alone - like the call and response - which force him to connect at a different level, other than delivering songs, and the best decision has been to drop Freddie's famous one and to have one that is all his own. Like cassie has said, these are an art form in themselves and require practice. From how I see it, his vocal solo in Montreal was a turning point .... it just got better and better from here, even though there have been steps backwards again. By the way, this is my favourite moment from ANY part of the tour so far - this is an audience completely in tune with him - and he is the initiator of it:

As his confidence grows, there are more spontaneous moments in the concert, he goes off script now in his segues, there are jamming moments, he chats more now - the audience sees who he is more and likes it more, so there is a virtuous cycle of feedback - more confidence, more showing himself, more approval, more confidence ..... and more emotional connection at all levels. The audience becomes more receptive because of it - it is not just in Adam's delivery.

Adam's style with an audience is usually one of friendliness and egalitarian. He connects as an equal - "let's celebrate together", not a star or egotistically different (and better than his audience). What I notice more, is that this is still very much there, but he has also become more dominant over an audience (in a good way). There's a real authority when he commands the audience to sing that wasn't there before.

I think it is also just part of the mystery of his giftedness and sensitivity - as a performer and a man. We can look for reasons, which may or may not be valid, they may even be a part of the explanation, but in the end great performers and loving individuals can just access more depth in ways that defy logic and explanation simply because they are ready and it happens in the moment. I think it is a combination of that spontaneity and being pushed there by this circumstance.

I agree with everything you guys said above, and I would add that these concerts have had really energizing audiences, which Adam loves -- as a performer, an audience full of energy really gives you a rush that translates into energy (the infinity sign idea). I believe these recent concerts are proof of the infinity idea in action. Plus Adam really owns the show now--especially since he received such a warm welcome in England!

BTW, I also tend to grow through facing obstacles and love to challenge myself. I think that is a sign of positivity because it means that you are never satisfied with the status quo, and Adam has said this many times--that he "gets bored" and tries new things. I can't wait to see what this next year brings as he conquers all his new material. It will be epic!
