Joey voice is a gimmick. It's part of her schtick. Her MW was more serious than usual, but it was certainly not in the same class as Adam's MW. It was not hauntingly, breathtakingly beautiful. I feel the same way. Adam's Mad World was epic. The fact that the song is still associated with him tells you all you need to know. Will anyone remember Joey's version in five years? IMHO it was not in the same league. Very good but a universe apart.

Nile Rodgers, one of the most qualified mentors in Idol history ( he’s worked with Madonna, Bowie, Daft Punk, even Idol alum Adam Lambert), made a very special appearance. Good times! Also Jax, the clever girl who wore “ The Dress" onstage a couple weeks ago, eschewed the usual boring Movie Night staples (no "I Believe I Can Fly" for her!) and did… Adam Sandler’s "I Wanna Grow Old With You," from The Wedding Singer. This was the most awesome and unexpected Movie Night song choice since Crystal Bowersox did Kenny Loggins’s Caddyshack theme in Season 9. And even more awesome? Later on Thursday, the actual Kenny Logins showed up and sang “Footloose.”Let’s daaaaaaance! .. Joey Cook – Joey did the Donnie Darko version of “Mad World,” and I am sure the Glamberts will come after me for this, but it was practically on the same level as Adam Lambert’s rendition from Season 8. Eschewing her usual goofiness — no accordion, no ukulele, no wacky dancing or Postmodern Jukebox hyperstylization — Joey gave a simple and stripped performance, totally in the moment, totally connected to the audience and the song. And she thrilled without even getting up out of her chair. J.Lo loved seeing this different side of Joey and compared her to Sia. Harry loved how Joey “chewed on those lyrics.” Keith Urban mused, “You’re such an artist.” I have really enjoyed seeing this once-gimmicky girl blossom, in such a short time, into such a fascinating and multi-faceted performer. Joey Cook is the real deal. (Joey's performance) Joey voice is a gimmick. It's part of her schtick. Her MW was more serious than usual, but it was certainly not in the same class as Adam's MW. I'm not sure gimmick is the word I would use because that indicates it's inauthentic and that she could change it if she wanted, which I don't think she can/could. But I think her voice is very niche and she is more of an indie artist rather than mainstream, which American Idol is all about mainstream.
I liked Joey's mad world but I found myself wanting more (and she's one of my favorites). Adam's was so startlingly beautiful in the way it haunted you afterwards. There was an internal ache from Adam's performance that was missing from Joey's.

IMHO it was not in the same league. Very good but a universe apart. Adam's MW was much more dynamic. Joey's, while good (especially compared to most of last night's performances), seemed to me to be pretty much on one level and without much range. Though of course she couldn't copy Adam's performance either!

IMHO it was not in the same league. Very good but a universe apart. Okay, you made me go watch it on YouTube. If I ignore Adam's version, I would say this one is very good. She has a quirky voice that I do not care for, but if it is your thing, she does that voice well. She captured the angst and depression of the song, but differently than Adam. Her version is dull and lifeless. A depressed person who is totally numb and cannot become passionate about anything. The melodic line she chose also was only six notes in range from the top to the bottom, if I am remembering rightly. No build up or climax to the song, just a monotonous drone. For this song, it works. However, because there is no emotion in the performance, I did not become engaged. I was not moved. I wouldn't want to hear it again. It's not a place I would want to visit, if you know what I mean. Adam's version? A universe apart, I agree. His grabbed me, and made me feel his pain. And the voice was haunting and beautiful.

It was not hauntingly, breathtakingly beautiful. I think we have to stop getting angry and frustrated when others say anything nice about anything Adam has done earlier...it is ludicrous to think we should table anything he sang on idol....or fcs, sitting on a stool!!?? Perry Como famously sat on a stool so using this framework, Adam had no right to sing on a stool. We hate it when A is/was constantly held to the Freddie standard [and often found lacking] yet we blithely do that to others. If you just say 'in my opinion' or 'I have a hard time enjoying' that is fair....but another version is just schtick....that is patently unfair, IN MY OPINION. And it is disingenuous to claim his version was perfect when the last note was horribly off....I love his version and it is epic...but perfect...not. Joey's version was not for everyone, I am sure...just as Adam's Queen is not for everyone [hard as that seems to understand]....but she was really good and I do not for a minute think it was schtick. There are 3 or 4 especially talented kids on the show this year and Joey is one of them, that are really unique and creative. I think that is what has been missing for a long time on the show and it is really good to see. ymmv

Thanks so much Q3, Glitter and PattiHum for the info.
Since, I don't stream and really don't want to stream...other than to help Adam...I'm not gonna worry about streaming for the single. I will buy from Amazon and Itunes. Come album time....I might do some streaming if made simple and easy.... in addition to buying at both Amazon, Itunes and at Walmart. I figure I can buy 10 CDs to give away a lot easier and more stress free than doing 15,000 streams on my PC.

Buying is ALWAYS going to have the most immediate and positive impact on the music IMO. That is why I still buy hard copy CDs even though I have a subscription to Spotify and can listen to anything I want ad free 24/7. Personally, I still feel the importance of going to the store and putting my money down for music that I enjoy. I am paying for the artists/producers/mixers/engineers' talent and hard work and for me, it is worth every penny.

YES!! because 100s of people went into making the music and it is COPYRIGHTED!!! I am so sick & tired of people saying they never buy, they "DL for free!" Umm, no! "free" means the owner gave it to you! DLing without paying for it is stealing! BTW, I liked your idea about NOT buying the album at iTunes because then you are "completing" the album & consequently can not DL any subsequent singles! I am sure there will be fan versions at Adam Official or Adam's WBR page that we can order too. So excited! Can not wait!!

It is so easy and doesn't have the "very busy" pages that the other services have. I never streamed either but I now have my own playlist from rdio. Currently giving spins to Tove lo and Tori kelly!! So easy!

IMHO it was not in the same league. Very good but a universe apart. I didn't like any of the performances last night. Maybe it's just me and my tolerance level is low but these singers just don't cut it for me. The voice contestants this season are a lot better, IMO. That version of Mad World was not anywhere in the same league as Adam's version.
