Hmm. Which confirms my theory that some in the gay community have taken the absolute worst slurs against women (cunt, fish, bitch) and turned them around, owning them as a sign of solidarity, like some blacks with the word nigger, in-group lexicon and speech, wherein it is not necessarily derogatory. FIRST IT SEEMS THERE WAS CUNTY \ A word generally associated and used in gay society. It means an overwhelming feeling of self-conceit or cockiness. Associated with many feelings, usually of being a bitch, cocky, conceited, arrogant, obnoxious and the list goes on. I'm feeling cunty! Ohh she is FIERCE!, cunty! That bitch is being really cunty today... then add a little honey. Need for this kind of slur-owning will likely pass away the more empowered they become and the more accepted within society. Just so wierd as a woman hearing these degrading words we have fought against brought up again. the last time this whole conversation came up I didn't say anything when you posted over and over and over again but I'm sorry I have to say this... your continued use of the N WORD is SO offensive. Clearly I'm not a mod and I don't want irk anyone but I can't just sit here and pretend that that isn't just absolutely revolting to see used repeatedly as if it's nothing. IMO that word has not been reinvented by the black community and it is still a disgusting term I don't care who is using it and why. I believe that you may have missed the point of the reference. There is a large body of research about the transition of mean of certain derogatory terms and use within oppressed, disenfranchised or minority sub-culture populations. Among other things I manage a lot of field research project about youth subculture and trends -- including African American teens -- . and I have miles of video of kids using the N-word to express a wide range of emotions -- and sometimes it is used as a sign of inclusion or approval. Setting that aside, a slur is only powerful if the person it references is affected by it. I have no idea what it would be like to be 18, black and trying to hold my own in an urban subculture -- but my research work leads me to believe that it is much harder than I can conceive of. Finally, I live by the words of Elanor Roosevelt.... I have no idea what Adam meant and don't really care which meaning it meant to Adam. But the Urban Dictionary definition makes no sense to me as a term of endearment for a gay couple. I don't get it!
