the last time this whole conversation came up I didn't say anything when you posted over and over and over again but I'm sorry I have to say this... your continued use of the N WORD is SO offensive. Clearly I'm not a mod and I don't want irk anyone but I can't just sit here and pretend that that isn't just absolutely revolting to see used repeatedly as if it's nothing. IMO that word has not been reinvented by the black community and it is still a disgusting term I don't care who is using it and why. I believe that you may have missed the point of the reference. There is a large body of research about the transition of mean of certain derogatory terms and use within oppressed, disenfranchised or minority sub-culture populations. Among other things I manage a lot of field research project about youth subculture and trends -- including African American teens -- . and I have miles of video of kids using the N-word to express a wide range of emotions -- and sometimes it is used as a sign of inclusion or approval. Setting that aside, a slur is only powerful if the person it references is affected by it. I have no idea what it would be like to be 18, black and trying to hold my own in an urban subculture -- but my research work leads me to believe that it is much harder than I can conceive of. Finally, I live by the words of Elanor Roosevelt.... "No one can make you feel inferior without your consent." “You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience by which you really stop to look fear in the face. You are able to say to yourself, 'I lived through this horror. I can take the next thing that comes along.” “Great minds discuss ideas; Average minds discuss events; Small minds discuss people.” And my current motto for this month because I am tackling a project that "cannot be done".... “You must do the thing you think you cannot do” Since we're stepping back and talking about social science (thanks Skylar, IA w/ your analysis), here's my take on the "c" word: Feminists (some flavors) don't necessarily equal pearl clutchers. It's fine not to love the word in general. Gay men and all women get a free pass using it my book, because if they choose to, it's a form of re-appropriation and can be fun as well as empowering. On the other hand, just 'cause it's ALSO common and considered inoffensive in youth culture and other subcultures used by everyone doesn't mean it still isn't problematic (think of all the other slurs common in youth culture). But unless it's your kid or your classroom, and you want to give a little history lesson, anything more than an eyeroll is overreaction IMO. Honestly language is a slippery fish and changes meaning faster than everyone can keep up.
