KISS Bash 2015 – Part 1

Last night’s concert was full of surprises for me. Good surprises.

The venue is a modern hockey arena. It was designed to amplify the sound of the audience’s roars and increase game excitement. For a concert, it means that the audience noise in this venue is really loud.

Sometimes I go to Adam concerts with friends or family. Sometime I arrange to meet people at the show. But every now and then I go to see Adam by myself. Buffalo was one of those concerts. I bought the ticket on an impulse, and made no other plans. This left me free to just enjoy the music and ignore most other things.

I splurged on a VIP Seat with a M&G. The concert started at 5:00pm and my M&G was at 8:20pm. It was my second Adam M&G, my first having been at the Wilkes-Barre show. I was more prepared this time to capture the fast moment. I tried to pay attention to the artists who were performing by I must have looked at the arena clock every 10 minutes to make sure I was on time. {2 hours and 18 minutes to go.}

My seat was great. It was 7th row center on the floor. I had a lot of young girls around me – mostly wearing various forms of Shawn Mendes T’s. But I was also near a few very nice Adam fans. Adam had the second largest M&G and he got the second most cheers. Shawn Mendes got huge cheers.

There were two stages – the main stage at the end of the arena and a smaller B-stage at the back of the floor. The sound was LOUD, bone-shaking loud. The bass was clearly turned up to 11, or 12.

As these Top 40 radio shows go, this was a very interesting and talented line-up. Here is a brief summary of the show:

5:05 PM Becky G – Main Stage – She was an energetic show opener. She was clearly nervous opening the show. Partway through the performance she even said she was nervous about opening the show. The arena was only about 1/3 full for her performance as people were just arriving and getting drinks and food. She had 4 dancers with her. Entertaining but generic. She did her job well, and the audience was pretty excited.

5:25 PM Jocelyn Alice – B Stage – Jocelyn is a Canadian indie pop artist who I have never seen live before. She can sing but the set was boring. It turned odd when she sang “Oh Holy Night.” It was just the wrong choice for the occasion.

5:50 PM Omi – Main Stage – You may know Omi (pronounced O-Me for non-pop fans) from his big hit, “Cheerleader”. He was fun and charming. His Jamaican accent was more noticeable live.

6:30 PM Alessia Cara – Main Stage – She is a Canadian singer songwriter – I only know one song of hers and expected little. She was one of the big surprises for me. She came out in ripped jeans and a plain knit top looking like a young college student on campus – she seemed very centered. Alessia first broke through on YouTube with acoustic covers. She recently had a hit with “Here”. She is only 19 but really talented. She will be around for a while. Her set was destroyed by sound issues but she can sing, and she can write songs.

6:55 PM Nathan Sykes – B Stage – He was great! I have seen him before and like him – but this was the first time I saw an acoustic set. He even managed to work in a Christmas song along with his hits.

7:15 PM Robin Thicke – Main Stage – I am not a fan. Thankfully I left to get a drink and get to may meet and greet.

8:00 PM Charlie Puth – Main Stage – I was in line waiting for Adam. I would have like to have seen him but PRIORITIES!!

(I get to meet ADAM!!  This was the best moment of the night!! )

8:30 PM Silento – B Stage – I got back in time for most of this set. Excellent.

8:50 PM Shawn Mendes – Main Stage – He was great. He was on stage with just his guitar. The whole arena was on their feet the whole time. He is only 17! He was shiny and bright and new and cleancut. If young girls are going to squeal for a young cute male singer, he is a really good choice.

9:35 Adam Lambert – Main Stage – Last big surprise - Adam arranged to extend his set. So I was expecting only 25 minutes and we got 3 more songs!!

10:15 Balloon Drop – it was great. We were buried in blue and white balloons. Everyone picked up the long balloon and was wiggling them to the music. Trespassing/AOBTD filled the arena.

I am still in Buffalo. My plan was to go skating today before I returned to Akron. They have a beautiful ice complex, Canal Place. Unfortunately, it is 65 degrees here and they have had to close the complex because they can't keep it frozen. It is all melty. Apparently once the temperature goes above 50ish the cooling system can’t keep up.

It in a few minutes I will be heading back across “the used to have snow” belt along the southern shore of Lake Erie. It is usually the cloudiest place in North America. It usually has a few feet of snow. Today I am thinking about sunbathing at the beach in Geneva, OH.

I will post about Adam show later today. I have to check out and meet a friend for lunch – in a sports bar. I had dinner after the concert last night in a sports bar – the only place opened at 11PM, I had breakfast this morning in a sports bar – it came with my hotel. Buffalo – concert in a hockey arena, 3 meals in sports bars, seems right.
