LightLoveAdam Just an Adam Fan RT @jam2885: Of course. RT @siamusic: Adam just texted me. Def no collab with xtina planned, although he said he would love to. Damn. Aw crap!!! >:( I'm not crazy about the messenger either, cause as far as the way Sia feels about fans, I could never support any artist who is so dismissive of his/her fans. I believe the connection between the artist and fans is vital to their career success. Fan loyalty goes far beyond buying a CD. Apparently she doesn't think so. Oh well -Sia - good luck with that attitude. And anyway, what business was it of hers to inject herself into? That was Adam's business. Don't like the message - don't like the messenger. heh. : Personally, I agree with her that fans are not entitled to anything except the product they pay for. I'm not sure it's a wise idea for any performer to state it so baldly, but really--why does a performer owe more to the public than, say, a plumber? You pay a plumber to fix your sink and you don't expect them to give you an autograph when you come across them in a restaurant. Whatever artists choose to give fans beyond the CD, or the movie, or whatever, is up to them, but I don't think fans should feel that anything more is owed to them for being fans. I choose to be Adam's fan; he didn't ask it of me. Therefore, I don't have the right to ask anything of him except to give me performances that are worth the money I pay for them. I may want more from him--I do! I do!--but he doesn't owe me more.

Just as the music business is changing and evolving, so it the relationship between fans and artists. This is in many ways, new territory for the artists and the fans.
Back in the dinosaur age when I was a teenager, I prowled the magazine counters for teen magazines that just might have a photo or a snippet of info on Paul McCartney. I knew everything about him: he had a sheep dog, a townhouse in London somewhere, an aston martin car, an ID bracelet on his left wrist, a girlfriend named Jane Asher. I knew his birthdate, his brother's name, his parents' occupations. A true fan.
Compare that to now. Thru the world-wide network of ninja fans, we know within minutes where Adam is eating lunch, where he is shopping, when he cuts his hair, what hotel he is staying in in Russia, when he has gone without shaving for a couple of days, etc. etc. We probably know every piece of clothing in his closets and every piece of jewelry in the drawer he keeps it in. Many fans feel this irresistible need to know where he is thruout every day. We expect him to tweet us with updates about his life at least every 48 hours or so. Many feel they can tweet him just anything --- about his intimate personal life, his hair, his clothes, his friends, his choice in music, his choice of partners. They also feel they can tweet him about very personal things in their own lives, and expect him to respond to them. It extends past the artist himself, to friends, family, and business contacts. Fans dog them as well for more info.
How can any artist know how to navigate all that? How to live with all that? They have an impossible task to satisfy all the fans and all the paps all the time, never losing their cool, never making the slightest negative comment (when we routinely do so in our daily lives). If they are anything less than gracious and accommodating, not only the fans jump all over them, but so do countless media sources.
We are all learning how to navigate in today's global world. I try to give these artists the benefit of the doubt about what they say and do. The only real expectation that I can have of an artist is that they will produce art which I can choose to purchase and enjoy. Anything else they choose to share I consider a gift.
ETA: Just saw an article analyzing Adam's dream.

:-[ Me too. Record stores and book store were truly magical places. Especially the used ones where everything was cheap and you wondered around until something "spoke" to you, or an album cover made you laugh so you bought it without listening. The store clerks were a wealth of knowledge, almost like a sacred position passing on their secrets to those with the desire to learn, be moved, needed a laugh. I'm reminded of a quote from Black Elk, a Shaman who told the story of his life from the time before anyone had seen a white man and up to the point where they are all living in square houses on a reservation and he's now old and sad remembering when they lived like nature intended, in a circle. " Others came, too, and we made these little gray houses of logs that you see, and they are square. It is a bad way to live, for there can be no power in a square. " That's how I feel about the move to the computer to find our entertainment. There can be no power in this electronic box. But I realize I'm a hypocrite because that's how I found Adam. 8-) As Gilda Radner's hard of hearing character would sat...Nevermind. ;D Good night all.

THIS, THIS AND THIS!!! Seoulmate and Jamie.... Q3, you outdid yourself on your banner page article today!! Thank you.

Hmmmm...wonder what this means. There was a story in the new recently about people doing a flash mob at the Jefferson memorial for some reason--I think a protest of something--and the cops there went over the top arresting them(beating them to the ground, etc) and shit..saying they needed a permit or something...ridic. Lynne--Hahaha yes. Had to stop. Too much terrible made brain hurt. Here is the post I did about it on my site, complete with a link to the original post abt the whole shebang if anyone isn't familiar with the Colbalt Sky crap. Sooo bad. Sooo good. I don't know how anyone would take a movie offer for....that. www.thehomeplanet.org/?p=67499Beating and arresting people for not having a permet? Sounds familiar. I wonder if the US State Department will condemn this?

Wow, Gaga says an album shouldn't cost more than 99 cents. Talk about devaluing an artist and their ability to make some money. bit.ly/kNrBwq Well, she sort of said that: ...the pop star explained that she doesn't think a download of her album should necessarily be worth more than 99 cents. "It’s invisible. It’s in space. If anything, I applaud a company like Amazon for equating the value of digital versus the physical copy, and giving the opportunity to everyone to buy music," she said.
