Hoopla--thanks for posting that link to the OUT interview again. I reread it every now and then because it really is such a wonderful, thoughtful, nuanced interview that Adam gave. It brings me back to how very damn pissed off I got about it all back then. I wrote a long and angry (although respectful) email to Aaron Hicklin about it at the time, and he actually wrote me back immediately a mostly thoughtful response (although he wasn't willing to own some of what he did wrong). Gah, when I read Adam's final comments in part II of the interview (make sure you read part II, guys) I still feel my blood simmering to a boil:
"My job is to make this look easy and fun. That’s the illusion, the vibe I’m trying to create for people to feel. That’s what I want to do as an entertainer, create a mood that rubs off on people. This is scary, and it is a lot of work. And I’m OK, I’ll be fine. But, wow, this is a lot. And I hope that people are compassionate about that. I took a chance, stepped my life up a little, have some opportunities, have a little money, and I’m doing the best I can. I’m doing the best I fucking can, you know?" And to have that quote in your magazine--to have someone be so honest and open with you--and then hit him with that letter......grrrrrr.....(and I'm sure one of the lessons Adam learned, for better or for worse, was to be much more guarded in future interviews than he was in this one)... but this is all water under a very very distant bridge. I bring it up only because we have all variously been remarking in recently weeks (Adam included) about how increasingly comfortable Adam seems with his situation now--how he's settling into his role and his fame and seems confident and happy and ready for next, and it really strikes me, looking back at this quote at that nervous moment in his career, how very very good the "best that I can" was for Adam--he did SOOO good--and he's earned the comfort and respect he has now tenfold. Hard work and genuineness pays.
