But what word or words would better fit into a conversation or interview when Adam is discussing his sexuality? It seems to me, preference and lifestyle are being over analyzed by the gay and lesbian community. My preference is to be straight, but I didn't choose it. How would he phrase it without using either word, is my question? He says over and over again, "I am gay." That's about as blunt and right to the point as one can be. I agree. I think for Adam the word preference shows he's in control of who he is and not only accepts his sexuality but embraces it and actually prefers being gay to possibly being straight. If he were to say "I'm gay, I can't help that I'm gay" IMO it would come across as "I'd change it if I could but I can't" which is the vibe I get from a lot of gays in general. By using the words preference and lifestyle IMO it shows that Adam lives his life on his own terms and his being gay is just part of who he is as a person. As for the lifestyle thing I think he's speaking to far more than his sexuality in that phrase. Adam's "lifestyle" consists of parties and glamorous events and friends who are artistic and off-center. He belongs to a community that is socially libral and sexually probably pretty open. That's the lifestyle he's referring to IMO.

Bridget, et al - What a wonderful commentary this afternoon/evening. I agree with a lot of what has been discussed and you have also offered me some new thoughts to ponder. Having a gay daughter, I am sad to say my evolution has been a slow, sometimes painful awakening and understanding, but life hands us a way of continuing the lessons throughout our lives with new standard bearers.

Since there is really nothing going on tonight, I am gonna pop in here to drop this little gift off....I'm sure you can find use for it in the future. And with that I bid you adieu.

I'm Gonna Crumb!! I am lol :D Thank you for that. When I hear the word lifestyle I am always reminded of the "bohemian" lifestyle of the 50's and 60's or the "hippie" lifestyle of the 60's and early 70's. And I prefer a nice butt over a six pak You are liable to find any kind of cookie in my cookeejar(oops, that's part of my 70's lifestyle)

I love the discussion that you started midwifespal and have saved yours and others responses in a word file to mull over at a later date. You guys rock. By the time I get to the end of the thread, the conversation may have shifted but ... His use of preference and lifestyle have confused me too. I'm glad to see some well-thought-out explanations here. Hugh Hefner and I are both straight, but I can guarantee you that we have different lifestyles.
