It's amusing in terms of our discussions of cheesy lyrics that you have that particular U2 song on your list and say that lyrics are paramount because Bono literally cringes over that song and believes that the opening lines of it are the cheesiest thing he's ever written while the rest of the band totally disagrees. But all of the band insist that the entire embodiment of that song exists in the first 16 bars before a word is even sung. That intro is the heart from which the entire song was created and it took them months to develope the rest of the song in a way that they felt did not loose that emotion and feeling. They spent so much time on it in fact that Eno (producer) at one point tried to erase the track so that they would stop wasting time on it. It has become one of the band's most important songs and they once turned down 23 million dollars offered by a car company to use it in a commercial. Oh, that's so funny! Poor Bono, I sympathize... I don't think the lyrics are brilliant, but they are strong, and the song as a whole is brilliant. I had to have a U2 song on the list, because they are incredible, but it was a tough choice and I ended up going with this because it is epic even though there are other songs of theirs that I personally like more. The lyric for that was actually mostly written when Bono was in Ethiopia after Live Aid. He and his wife snuck off to spend 4 to 6 weeks working at one of the feeding camps set up there to distribute food. Nobody knew who they were but a week or so in someone figured out Bono wrote songs and they wanted a way to teach basic sanitation and health info so they got Bono and Ali to write nursery rhyme type songs about what they were trying to teach and those songs are still taught there to this day. When they were leaving a man tried to get Bono and Ali to take his son saying that if they took him he would live but if he stayed he would die, but the rules didn't allow for adoption so they couldn't do it. Bono says that in a way he did take him in spirit and that is what has driven a lot of his philanthropy since then.

That also happened with David A. He did not sing the lines about "no religion" in Imagine. And that was considered his signature song from that season! But Adam sure sang about "every inch of his love" didn't he! ;D ILHSFM! Exactly!

It's fun to see the top 5 lists. Wow, it's REALLY hard to limit the list to 5, but here's mine:
Voodoo Child - Jimi Hendrix
Black Dog - Led Zeppelin
Fire and Water - Free
Back in Black - AC/DC
The Unforgiven - Metallica

I like most of the songs already mentioned but would like to add another two;
I know this song has been already selected but I just can't listen to this sung by any other artist;

Ohhh MAN!! Soooo many good songs. And so many that would easily make my list. Right off, "Day In the Life," "American Pie," "Losing My Religion," "Gethsemane," HOTM ...
When I first read this last night, I was going to attempt to find some things in the genres I like most, so pop, rock, show tunes. Then I decided to go with the ones that just popped into my head and are MY favorite songs of all time.
BTW, I LOVE Les Mis and "Bring Him Home" and "Dream a Dream" were two I considered. Also "New Years Day" and "Sunday Bloody Sunday" ... But here goes (I deliberately chose versions with lyrics):
Pink Floyd "Hey You"
Elton John "Don't Let the Sun Go Down On Me"
Queen "Somebody to Love"
I stumbled on this version of "Freedom 90" by George Michael, which has always been one of my favs and I love it. Now that I know what he was struggling with, I love it all the more.

And as show tunes there are so many great choices, but this one, when performed live, never fails to choke me up. Don't know if it's the best, but it does kill me for some reason.
William Warfield "Old Man River"

Doesn't include the last two stanzas, but okay It's really the AI producers I judge for the version they deemed was appropriate for the Idol audience. Sorry, this is nothing against Jason-- I do like him. I just have a lot of feelings about this, I guess That also happened with David A. He did not sing the lines about "no religion" in Imagine. And that was considered his signature song from that season! But Adam sure sang about "every inch of his love" didn't he! ;D ILHSFM! What amuses me is the way that has become and "inspirational" song when lyrically I always found it to be the exact opposite. For me the lyrics are imagining a world where there is peace because of an absence of all these things that people care so much about. I always found the song depressing as hell despite its sweetness.

Just an update on the Sauli Central:
The blog translations are now up, some of them have been re-translated. Also photos have been added.
Tutka Roadshows are on the way - Zinnia is working with them. They are a lot of work!
I'll start with the Radio Aalto interviews next.
