Someone asked earlier, "Why no Top 40 songs? Is it because we are too old?" My answer is "Yes!!" << ETA: That sounds harsh! :( It probably is just because many members here have admitted that they do not listen to Top 40 radio. There are lots of great top 40 songs from recent years. Will they pass the test of time? Who knows right now. Only time will tell. This is the first one that comes to mind: Then these: I could go on and on with great songs from the past 5 years. But you get the idea. Finally a person who is posting something not old! Your choices are excellent IMO! I would certainly add these. (LOL I don't know if these songs were on top 40)

Well 3 out of 5 songs I posted were released before I was born or when I was a very young child, so "No", but yes, it is too soon to judge today's songs but that doesn't mean they are not out there. By the way what is that Chunkey's song? Link or it doesn't exist.

What amuses me is the way that has become and "inspirational" song when lyrically I always found it to be the exact opposite. For me the lyrics are imagining a world where there is peace because of an absence of all these things that people care so much about. I always found the song depressing as hell despite its sweetness. The song is grossly misused, I agree. When you really examine the lyrics, the song is deeply radical and revolutionary. It calls for elimination of religion and nationality and ownership and proposes a utopian, socialistic vision of brotherhood and peace. Not sure it's possible, at this point in our evolution as humans, but it's quite a challenge to the listener's worldview. And yes, the gentleness of the arrangement juxtaposed with the radical lyrics adds to the power, even though it probably contributes to people not paying attention to the words and hearing it as a pretty ballad. IMO this song is sacred and should never be sung incomplete.

Bring him home...I have wept to this more times than I can possibly say! When my mother was ill..I lived just over a 2 hour drive from home and I drove there every weekend for close to a year. The Les Miz cd just filled the entire drive...I saw the show live 3 times in reality and at least 2 or 3 hundred times in my mind. The first time I saw Colm Wilkinson perform this on Broadway, I began sobbing so hard I had to go out to the lobby and compose myself because I was disturbing everyone in my row. Whenever I need a good cry, I can put on this cd or watch the 10th anniversary dvd and it does the trick! I've been trying to come up with my own list of 5 best but I keep changing my mind. My favorites depend upon what mood I'm in or where I am at any given moment. I love seeing everyone's selections. You all have great taste in music. We could put the songs all together and make a really great playlist.

Such a cheesy song, but I heard that so many times

This and a glass a wine, cozy blanket and fire... yeah
My fav foot stomper - first heard this on a rainy day, rain streaming down the window, thunder crashing and lighting streaming across the sky
Found this version from Glee Project ;D
Off to search for more....
Q3 note: Amazing Grace is one of my favorite songs but not qualified -- it was published in 1779.
