I always thought that when Adam was given "One" to sing by Simon that half the verses where not TV friendly How can someone sing "did I leave a bad taste in your mouth" or the lyric about being Jesus and come to raise the dead. Adam did a great job with what he could use and then Randy says he didn't care for how he changed it up. What's a person to do????? JMO LOL it does sound dirty doesn't it? There is no lyric about Jesus raising the dead. The lyric is "Have you come here to play Jesus to the lepers in your head (or bed as Bono sometimes sings)" And Bono literally did a spit take when someone pointed out how many lyrical references to oral sex there were on that album. He then sheepishly commented that 69 is the most equal sexual position. The bad taste in your mouth lyric was really because he was improvising over the music and the band had been fighting non stop and was on the verge of breaking up and they were just jamming and when things started to coalesce he just started singing what he was feeling. Thanks Rihannsu for the backround on the song and the correction on the lyrics. I really do like the song but I bet Adam was cringing about the lyrics and trying to get a version he could sing on tv.

Do you REALLY want to live in a world where there is NOTHING to care about, where there is NO PASSION? I wouldn't, would just as soon be dead that's why I find it depressing. I had a moment in my life where I contemplated whether there was anything worth living for and the idea of not feeling any love or passion for the rest of my life was overwhelming. I decided that if I couldn't actually feel any real emotion then what was the use of going on because people in my life would be better off without me. Luckily I made it past that moment but that is the scenario that Imagine conjures up for me. Nothingness, just existance with no feeling a peace not born of contentment but of apathy. I always felt like people who find that song inspirational do so on the feel of the music rather than the lyric or that they only focus on pieces of the lyric without seeing it as a whole. To me Lennon was mocking the whole brotherhood of man thing. Maybe he wasn't but it comes across that way to me. I'm so glad you made it past that moment! And I agree, a life without passion is unthinkable. I'm fascinated by your take on the song because I hear it so differently. I see nothing about lack of passion in "living for today... living life in peace... all the people sharing all the world." It's a vision of moving past the things that cause so much conflict-- religion, nationalism, ownership. But it raises an interesting question about what would inspire art in such a world, since so much of art is fed by passion, and passion is often fueled by some type of conflict. See that's what's so interesting about frame of reference. Most people see living for today as a positive thing and most of the time I do too, but in the context of seeing the rest of the song talking about no passion, no belief, etc. I see living for today as more of a mindless going through the motions type thing. Of course that was what my life felt like then because, to borrow from Bono again, I was "Stuck in a Moment". I couldn't see a future that wasn't just more of the same that was beating me into the ground in the first place. I couldn't drum up any feeling or passion or hope. I was so disconnected emotionally from the world that nothing was getting through and to me the lyrics of 'Imagine' were painting a picture of that nothingness. I made the decision that I would watch the Live Aid broadcast and if I could watch the whole thing without feeling SOMETHING then what use was there to hang around. I was convinced that I was of no use to anyone much less my toddler who I thought would be better off with my mother-in-law raising her than with me. Thank God for Bono because when he jumped off that stage to drag that girl out of the crowd and put his arms around her to just sway to the music I FELT it. In that moment I felt arms around me and a profound sense of LOVE. And that is why I'm still around. My life didn't change overnight and in truth I totally blanked that whole experience out of my memory for years but that was the turning point for me. What's even stranger is that although I remained aware of U2 in a vague way I didn't become a "fan" until 2005 and my exploration of their history gradually dug up a lot of memories that I had blocked out. When the Live Aid DVD came out and I was watching it I started remembering more and more about the day I actually watched it and before I got to the U2 part I had to stop the DVD and let the memories wash over me. It was a very strange experience to say the least.

whatyasay, love that you posted this one! I spent a good two years' worth of Saturday nights dancing to this song in clubs. I had to watch the video just to remember the beautiful Pete Burns before he decided to go plastic surgery crazy.

Since I've only posted one song, I have another to add. One of the best songs to come from the Grunge era: Pearl Jam's Black
I love this unplugged version. I saw Pearl Jam in concert many times back 90's and out of the 100's of concerts I have been to in my life, the first Pearl Jam concert I attended probably ranks at #1.

For those of you into rock, you can scroll by this one. For those who love Sondheim and theatricality, this song is achingly beautiful and sung with such deep emotion, it leaves me in awe.
