What an awesome way to spend the day. It's taken forever to get through the thread since I've listened to every song I'd never heard before, and some of my old favorites ( plus lurking on the Burning Man ustream). 100 is starting to seem like a pretty small number for a "great song' list, but I think Laura Nyro belongs on there somewhere. Her voice, the music and especially her lyrics, really do it for me. She wrote so many great songs, most made famous by other artists. These are 2 of my favorites.
The Blood, Sweat and Tears cover is more famous, but this is a cool stripped down version.

Hi guys!! I watched a few vids of songs that I love & they made me cry. Oops! Not sure how many more I can watch right now...lol! Ok..trying to laugh here. Just really stressed/depressed right now. Will clarify in the personal thread later or tomorrow. But, you all are bringing some awesome songs over here. I so love that. Just so much relates to things past or current that I am going through. Prolly doesn't make much sense, but it will. My Huskers are doing great!! Woot! 26 to 7, .....oops...another td....YEAHHHHHHHHH!! But, one stupid announcer keeps dissing my team, even with us being 33-7 at this point??? GRRRRR I was really up when I first started watching the game and then noticed my sweet pupdog Fosters Husker scarf, hanging there....without him. First time in 10 years that he wasn't wearing it and watching the game with me. It's been just shy of 2 months since he left me. Lost my job on Thurs. Just too much shit going on for this old lady. Sorry...don't mean to be a downer. I'll come back later when I get myself together. I really, really want to watch all these vids. There are so many that are favorites of mine. Just getting too emotional right now. So many amazing songs. Too much time to hear them right now. Right now, In My Life - The Beatles is still my fav. So many more I so love. bbl

I know a lot of the songs seem old and many of us have stated that is because it takes time to determine a song's longevity but here is one that I think will stand that test.

Ok not sure if they have been posted or not but these two are at opposite ends of style on the greatest songs continuum (cheese and sincerity). I couldn't even begin to name my top 5 greatest songs...
Bat out of Hell - Meatloaf
and Sound of Silence - Simon and Garfunkel

willowgarden - I was jsut reading through the whole thread and kept thinking, where the heck is "Yesterday"? How could no one have listed it? Finally, I see it on page 15! I have no idea how I'm going to pick just 5 songs. My taste is very ecelctic from classical to big band, folk to rock, pop to "american songbook" and musical theater to Disney. Picking just 5 songs across all this (well, at least classical is out of the mix) is pretty tough. The only 2 I'm certain are on my list are "Yesterday" - Lennon/McCartney and "Summertime" from Porgy & Bess - Gershwin. Some that I'm considering for my list include: I feel like Jim Croce and Harry Chapin NEED to be included - it's just so hard to pick which 1 song is the best... How about these? Harry Chapin - Cat's in the Cradle Jim Croce - Photograph's and Memories I've seen a little Simon & Garfunkle, but one of my favorites is this: 59th Street Bridge Song I've seen some Billy Joel - but what about It's Still Rock & Roll to Me? Or just because I love a waltz and there are VERY few out there, Can I have this Dance? - Anne Murray And lastly, for now! The most under-rated singer/songwriter (probably because she's female & best known for her appearance) I Will Always Love You - Dolly Parton (Who WROTE it and had a huge hit long before Whitney!) I was really tempted to use my favorite Dolly song, but I think it might be considered obscure - I have no idea if it was ever a single or not - "Love is like a butterfly" www.youtube.com/watch?v=KqZdbZ9udFk

See that's what's so interesting about frame of reference. Most people see living for today as a positive thing and most of the time I do too, but in the context of seeing the rest of the song talking about no passion, no belief, etc. I see living for today as more of a mindless going through the motions type thing. Of course that was what my life felt like then because, to borrow from Bono again, I was "Stuck in a Moment". I couldn't see a future that wasn't just more of the same that was beating me into the ground in the first place. I couldn't drum up any feeling or passion or hope. I was so disconnected emotionally from the world that nothing was getting through and to me the lyrics of 'Imagine' were painting a picture of that nothingness. I made the decision that I would watch the Live Aid broadcast and if I could watch the whole thing without feeling SOMETHING then what use was there to hang around. I was convinced that I was of no use to anyone much less my toddler who I thought would be better off with my mother-in-law raising her than with me. Thank God for Bono because when he jumped off that stage to drag that girl out of the crowd and put his arms around her to just sway to the music I FELT it. In that moment I felt arms around me and a profound sense of LOVE. And that is why I'm still around. My life didn't change overnight and in truth I totally blanked that whole experience out of my memory for years but that was the turning point for me. What's even stranger is that although I remained aware of U2 in a vague way I didn't become a "fan" until 2005 and my exploration of their history gradually dug up a lot of memories that I had blocked out. When the Live Aid DVD came out and I was watching it I started remembering more and more about the day I actually watched it and before I got to the U2 part I had to stop the DVD and let the memories wash over me. It was a very strange experience to say the least.
