SusieFierce wrote SusieFierce I remember I read something about that but it was a looooong time ago, that the producers in Wicked even though he was the best singer, didn't ever give him the lead role because Adam often changed the melody and he wasn't as strict as they wanted him to be. Not surprising now that we know Adam, even though I'm sure he would change it for the better. Also, that even though he passed the auditions on AI he was going to give up on idol, if they gave him the lead role in Wicked. We must remember that, at that time, the only thing that Adam believed he would gain from idol was to have lead roles in musicals, he never thought he would make it as a pop singer. They said no , and Adam went on to AI. I wish I could remember where I read it, but I'm absolutely sure that I did. You are mostly correct. Adam talked about going on Idol because he thought he would get better roles in May 2009 but then really stopped talking about musical theater in interviews. He also had two call backs for Glee but they decided he was too old for the part. If he had been cast on Glee, he would have been type cast as "theater kid" forever. After Idol, he could have certainly gotten musical theater leading roles but then he had much bigger opportunities than I think he ever imagined. That said, there can be no doubt that Adam put a lot of effort over a 6 year period in writing, recording and performing songs -- at the same time as working in musical theater. Thank goodness he did not get the Wicked role!! And I am really pleased that the Idol producers decided to put him on Idol. If he could roll back time, I bet he would have loved to have had the Idol producers focus on his pre-Idol performance career more than Wicked.

I know he DID say that getting better theater roles would be a backup benefit to going on Idol, but it certainly wasn't his primary motivator. That was kind of his worst-case scenario. IF I at least get on TV and get a little notoriety (even if I don't go far), I will have more of a chance to be cast as a Broadway lead ... (The roles were going to TV stars more and more starting several years ago.) He HAD been trying to break in as an original artist at that point and had written a lot of original songs, both on his own and with Monte. He said repeatedly when he got back from Burning Man after having his revelation: "All I wanted to do was make music!" (Not, oh, I just figured out a new way to get a better theater gig ...) In the LA Times four-part interview, he basically stated he didn't get the lead as Fiyero in L.A. because he quit the touring production in Toronto. (He also mentioned leaving "Wicked" in Toronto to become a "rock star" in E!THS.) He had to pretty much beg for his job back when the production came back to L.A. (as his said in the L.A. Times interview). I have never heard or read that he would have passed on Idol if he had been given the lead in "Wicked" either.

Oddly BTW is my fav song on her new album -- but I love Madonna so it was certain to be a hit with me. I had a long drive yesterday and listened to a lot of radio -- every time "You and I" came on I switch stations. It is in very heavy rotation here and has already burned out for me. JMHO -- this Gaga era is not as original or good as Fame/Fame Monster. I really believe that Poker Face and Paparazzi will be played in 10 years but this album will be forgotten. But maybe it is just too much Gaga and over time and with less hype I will appreciate this album more. I'll get back to you in 2021!! ETA: I think Katy Perry's Firework is a really good song, clever lyrics and just plain fun. I guess my taste is questionable too because I like California Gurls. There really needs to be a place for fun pop songs -- a lot of people who buy music are 14 or wish they were. So listening to You and I on the radio yesterday, Nebraska was edited out and Gaga was singing "Oregon" instead -- and it was more than a one word replacement, significant parts of the chorus were completely done over by her. Anyone else heard their state shoutout? I guess it's a unique PR ploy. Corny, but that seems appropriate to the song? (though I've seen a lot more wheat and range land than corn in eastern Oregon) www.propagaga.com/2011/08/25/lady-gaga-releases-customized-state-versions-of-you-and-i-to-radio-stations/Ok glad someone else noticed this! Thought I was losing my mind when one day I saw the music vid and it said Nebraska and then all day on ZY100 it said New York".....interesting but super gimmicky. It's kinda like the Mad Libs version of a Gaga song lol Oh I see she made a Cleveland version.....should I feel *special* now? LOL

I don't think his goal coming from Idol was a lead in musical theater. That might have been a fall back position. If Idol didn't give him his chance to be a pop star, maybe he would get enough name recognition to get a better role in the theater. Adam quit the Wicked touring company in 2005 because he wanted to do his own thing. He went back to Wicked in 2007 because he needed a regular paycheck, it was a sit-down company based in his hometown and he could still work on his own music. He was dissatisfied with theater and wanted a solo career long before Idol. Here's a very good interview: latimesblogs.latimes.com/americanidoltracker/2009/08/adam-lambert-the-ultimate-interview-part-three.html

Ok that Dev Dance in the Dark song is terrible....if you want a good Dance in The Dark song dl some Bruce Springsteen or Gaga's song by the same name which is miles better (and shoulda been a single in her last era imo)....although there is a Dev song I like called Booty Bounce which is totally stupid and mindless but it makes me wanna dance. Plus the video is kinda hypnotic.... www.youtube.com/watch?v=FDfUjM-vygIAnd other than that I don't really know much about her besides she fact that she has a fugly ass haircut that's tragic as all get out. Can she actually sing? Who knows. And yeah shekinda does look like a mix of Kesha and Cheeks! Weeeird.

LOL Yes, I heard the Cleveland version yesterday -- but prob not the best choice to play it in Akron. Whatever. I recall Steve Miller Band and Jefferson Airplane did this decades ago.

I think this may be the one you are remembering. It was a print interview so should be Googleable.

Another thing I always thought strange was in E!THS where Adam says he had to quit his job "just to audition." I think he might have been compressing a bit because I cannot imagine he would have to quit his professional gig just to do the cattle call auditions. Once he made it to the judges and Hollywood Week, THAT I understand, since contestants would be on TV, etc. But if he had to quit before going to the 1 of 300,000? Talk about your HUGE gambles. And on the subject of gambling ... LOL!! American Idol slot machine in Vegas. Adam featured.
