That’s like saying you’re having an olive for dinner. Maybe I’m just not flexible enough in my old(ish - ahem!) age. LOL...You could go in RV/rig up a shower, but that would kind of defeat the purpose for me. Reminds me of 10 days in Summer 1969—heighth of hippiedom—Portland cousins from commune came to visit my little MO town of 1,000—after which I went without showering/shaving etc. for 10 days to see if I liked it. I did. My mom didn't. My summer employer at the Frosty Freeze reaaaaallllly didn't. I have wanted to go to BM since 1988. I'm going next year. I'm not getting any younger. It has nothing to do with Adam, and he could be performing on my patio,* and I'd still rather be at BM. It's a spiritual necessity. *Okay, this example is rather extreme...

Cassie thanks for the Angelina interview loved listening to her analysis of Adam over the years.. The 10,000 hours of practice to get to this point is amazing had no idea what it takes to be that good. The 10,000 hours of practice is something I have heard before, and been impressed with. They say 10,000 hours over 10 years. That computes to 1000 hours per year. You would need to practice 2.75 hours per day, 365 days per year to amass that. Or, if you practiced only 5 days a week, 50 weeks a year, we are talking about 4 hours per day. And we are talking about PRACTICE, not just playing thru or singing thru pieces for fun. Not just playing pick up basketball games. (tho those things do help..... you get more benefit from calculated, focused practice). Very few people pursuing any skill have the determination, discipline, and passion to keep at it that long with that intensity. Those few who do we label as "naturally gifted" or "naturally talented" or "born that way." We label their skill as effortless. Boy, do we have that wrong! And people say that Adam is not a true musician because he doesn't play an instrument!!!! Well, I am very glad that he focused all those 10,000 hours on his vocal instrument. The results are stunning! How do we know Adam did this? Have I missed something? Did Adam say in an interview that he had reached the 10,000 hours milestone? Or is this just something this person guessed at? I'm doubting Adam spent 3 to 4 hours of daily concentrated vocal practice over the past ten years. BTW, the book "Outliers" by Malcolm Gladwell explores the 10,000 hour rule. It's a very interesting read.

Showing my age here ... as I was growing up, we bathed once a week, on Saturday night, I got the bathwater first and my brother followed me in the same bathwater. My hair was shampooed under the kitchen faucet after my bath. Of course that was before puberty so no need for deodorant, but we did play outside all the time and got plenty dirty.
I read a recent article about a bacteria in dirt that kills cancer cells ... maybe all that dirt in my youth is the reason I'm so healthy today? Bringing this back to Adam, maybe his playtime at Burning Man will keep him healthy? But I can't help but wonder if all that sand is hard on his vocal cords ...

BTW, the book "Outliers" by Malcolm Gladwell explores the 10,000 hour rule. It's a very interesting read. No, we don't know that Adam did this. ( And I will check out Outliers as well, as Adam certainly seems to be one.) Plus, it's not like the 10,000 hour rule is a rule of "all-or-nothing." Every hour of practice brings addition skill and mastery. I was looking at it more abstractly than literally. I think I can conclude that Adam has put in a great deal of practice on his voice based on several things we do know. 1. His voice teacher said that Adam first came to her at age 10, in 1992. Adam says he took lessons til he was about 21. Lessons require practice in between sessions. The lessons themselves are for demonstration and explanation. For tweaking. But, the real work is done in the "homework" of practice. So, I conclude that Adam practiced on his voice a lot over those 11 years. 2. As Angelina quoted in her program, when Adam was asked in an interview what he sang at home he said, "Scales." i.e. Practice. Drill. Refining one's technique, even today. 3. Listening to and watching Adam sing, I can hear/see the techniques he employs. One doesn't just do those things naturally. One may have the natural physiology, but one has to learn to use it, and practice using it until it becomes second nature. So, that when one is on-stage, performing to thousands, interacting with the audience, interacting with the band, monitoring the sound, yelling at the sound guy, dancing, kissing, improving, etc. the technique remains a solid foundation that one doesn't have to think about. That kind of automated skill takes a great deal of practice. 4. Many people comment that when Adam sings, whatever he sings, it sounds effortless. Well, believe me, it ain't. It only sounds effortless when one has so internalized the techniques that one can call upon them without conscious thought and incorporate them at will. The appearance of "effortless" performance in an artist, an athlete or a mathematician is a hallmark of many hours and years of practice. So, has Adam had 10,000 hours of practice with his voice? Can't say. In fact, Adam has said that he took to singing because it was something he could do well from the start, and he didn't have a lot of patience with things he wasn't good at. But I will bet a year's salary that he has countless hours of practice to sound as he does.

(Which we know it's his hobby, lol) Can't believe you have those pics, though.
