It continues to amaze me that in all the debates about homophobia and LGBT rights there is nobody pointing to the underlying misconcetion.
Just because somebody is not personally killing gay people does not mean he/she is not homophobic. Homophobia does not mean hate of homosexuals it means fear of them. And fear is very much underlying this debate and of course Adam is right when he says that fear is a result of ignorance.
Bottom-line: for the most part our mainstream population has stopped outright hating gays. We as society are dealing with the fringes where it is still going on (school bullying and hate crimes being two major areas of attention). I don't mean that it is not happening, just that the majority has arranged itself in some kind of 'comfort zone' that is not hateful. They have learned to act politically correct, they are polite, etc. And they think that with this the gay community will feel accepted.
The civil battle at hand deals with equality for gay people. The right to have a public presence equal to straight people (incl. kissing), the right to marriage, the right to equality in all state and federal law, the right to be not discriminated against in work place.....and so on.
The majority is fighting this equality demand by LGBT left and right and you can see it right now in the comments provided to the yahoo article or the youtube video and other articles that were posted that people are not ready to even acknowledge the real issue. People make it an issue whether this was a make-out session or not. It should not matter, because straight people would not be escorted off, even if their kissing were such that most people would find it uncomfortable. They would roll their eyes and try to deal with it. And deal with it is all that LGBT is now requesting and Adam is pointing that out. What is it that people don't get that this is about granting equal rights and that not being a hater is just not sufficient?
The comments under most of this stuff today are really disheartening.

Craazy--excellent points, all. Also, meant to say, as I've been catching up, that I loved your post yesterday (which you quoted from a little today) as well.

I agree with the description of Irate -- and I am certain if it happened to me, I would be irate too.
This seems to be a badly handled situation by a Southwest crew member. But since Southwest has not really responded in any way (just that long tweet statement) -- I now think that they have mishandled this from a PR standpoint.
This is sad considering they are the OFFICIAL AIRLINE of GLAAD and in recent years have been a supporter of LBGT equality.

There is still anger behind this humor. They are poking fun at the words "family oriented". They are still pissed off.

I used to be uncomfortable with the term "homophobia" because I thought that an anti-gay term should imply hate and not fear. Yet whenever issues involving gay rights come up and people object to gays having equal rights, I find myself thinking, "What are they afraid of?" What do straight couples fear if gays are allowed to marry? What does the military fear from the elimination of Don't Ask, Don't Tell? What do churches fear from the very existence of gays?
Anti-gay feelings really do stem from fear, as unreasonable as it sounds. But maybe that's good, because fear can be overcome. As gay people become more visible in our society, acceptance will follow. People who are now fearful of the unknown will realize that extending basic human rights to gay people is not going to interfere with their own rights and someone's sexuality will no longer be a big deal.
