adamlambert Adam Lambert Galliano: BRILLIANT designer screwed up and said offensive things. When can we forgive him and move on? LOVE his clothes. And I'm a born Jew! 1 minute ago And today's lesson is forgiveness. Galliano was tried in a court of law and recieved sentence. He made apologies to those involved and has undergone treatment for his alcohol and prescription med addictions. I agree with Adam that we should move on. If he screws up again (like Mel Gibson's repeated offenses) that would be a different matter. At this point Galliano has pretty much lost everything, his job, his reputation. This is not a case of someone getting off light or free. He deserves a chance to redeem himself. Being addicted doesn't cause a person to hate certain minority groups. It's just that being under the influence diminishes the person's ability to edit himself. Just because he went to rehab, doesn't mean he stopped hating Jews. He's just better equipped to control what he says out loud. It isn't even a matter for court. Each of us is free to make the decision whether they're comfortable buying from a racist.

I like this quote from Tom Ford about style; it describes Adam: "Style is a personal thing. It is what defines you. It is not only about clothes (in fact, it is rarely about clothes) but is about the way that one handles oneself with other people. To treat people kindly, to look them in the eye, to shake their hand firmly and to try to always be proud of ones actions are key elements of style as far as I am concerned. "

You expressed beautifully what I felt but could not find the words for! Excellent!

Didn't this incident just happen a few months ago? The guy spouted racist garbage. Forgiveness is certainly an individual decision and we all vary greatly here, but forgetting it already just because the guy makes nice clothes ... just for ME personally, I'd like to see some evidence that he has learned from his mistakes before I bought from him. Not that I can afford Galliano's clothes anyway!

It's my own fault that I get here too late to participate in some of the meaty discussions that have moved on pages ago. So I have just 2 comments: 1) A certain point of view is definitely not generational, and 2) Seoulmate - Where do you get those fabulous gifs??? I was emeshed in the seriousness of the topic and suddenly I'm in GIF heaven! Also - HAPPY BIRTHDAY ILOVEHAWAIAN!!!

I do not understand the rationalization that because Galliano is a brilliant designer he should be given a pass on hate speech. ETA: I wish he would engage in a conversation on twitter after that rather than just making the statement and leaving.

Definitely true. I didn't know what happened to Galliano after he made those statements (thanks for filling us in, Rihannasu). My HOPE would be that through his rehab, he was able to come to terms with the ugliness inside him that caused him to feel and believe those things in the first place. I have no idea what level of contrition he has expressed since or where he is with all of that, but part of rehab is facing the darkest parts of yourself, and I really, really hope he confronted it and has come to realize how reprehensible and hateful the statements were. I don't know that Mel Gibson has ever sincerely apologized for his statements, but now he's making a film about Judah Meccabe and SOMEONE must have financed this. ??? ??? Mmmkay ... ETA: Wait? Was it just a few months ago? For some reason I thought it was more than a year. Now I'm confused ...

I have a friend who was raised by a father who was literally a card carrying member of the KKK. She has worked consistantly all of her adult life to get past the prejudices that were ingrained into her as a young child and yet with all her work she will still slip into patterns of thought that are racist. As soon as it is pointed out to her she works diligently to change that. Each time she thanks those who point out her misconceptions. Should I have written her off the first time she came out with some kind of racist comment? From all the reports I have read at this point it appears that Galliano is trying to do what is right. Gibson however has constantly tried to excuse his behavior and has had repeated offenses and never really owned up to his actions. Two totally different situations in my book. Off course everyone is free to make their own decisions but many times people find condemnation easier than forgiveness. Forgiveness does take work and it does not have anything to do with forgetting either. ETA: I'm also not saying everyone has to run out and buy Galliano again but what the hell good does it do to throw away clothes already bought or not wear something you already own. If you choose to not buy Galliano again fine but if we throw out all works of art created by people who we disagree with the world would be a much poorer place.

Was it just a few months ago? For some reason I thought it was more than a year. Now I'm confused ... There were 2 incidents: one in Oct. 2010 and one this past Feb. The trial was in June, and the verdict was announced this month. Here are the details: articles.latimes.com/2011/sep/08/world/la-fg-france-galliano-20110909ETA -- Excerpt from Times article above: "Galliano was not in the Paris court on Thursday for the verdict. He was found guilty of making "public insults based on origin, religious affiliation, race or ethnicity" and declared to have had "sufficient awareness of his actions" to know what he was doing at the time of the incidents, despite his addiction and his fragile state. But the judges took into account that he apologized to the plaintiffs during the June trial and noted the "values of tolerance" in his work."

Your friend sounds like an admirable person. Thanks for reminding me that each person has got they're own individual story. And I really know nothing about Galliano's personal circumstances.
