Posting & running. Not enough time to think this through, but my gut reaction is to disagree with Adam on this one. Unless Galliano has done an about-face and made amends for his horrific statements...and I don't think he has. I rarely criticize or disagree with Adam but I feel a little bit of shallowness is surfacing here. He wants to wear Galliano suits. Maybe I'll revise my opinion a bit when I think it through but I don't think so. I feel the same way about Mel Gibson and Vicks. People rarely change their core beliefs that drastically. My first reaction is no, too. Galliano's heart isn't likely to change, but neither is Adam's. Does it matter whether Adam boycotts Galliano when he doesn't really feel it? I'm thinking that Adam's celebrity high profile does make it matter. Anyone else want to weigh in? |

Question - How do you follow someones Twitter feed? I thought it was @person’sname but just shows a few, not the continuous stream I thought it should be

And today's lesson is forgiveness. Galliano was tried in a court of law and recieved sentence. He made apologies to those involved and has undergone treatment for his alcohol and prescription med addictions. I agree with Adam that we should move on. If he screws up again (like Mel Gibson's repeated offenses) that would be a different matter. At this point Galliano has pretty much lost everything, his job, his reputation. This is not a case of someone getting off light or free. He deserves a chance to redeem himself. Being addicted doesn't cause a person to hate certain minority groups. It's just that being under the influence diminishes the person's ability to edit himself. Just because he went to rehab, doesn't mean he stopped hating Jews. He's just better equipped to control what he says out loud. It isn't even a matter for court. Each of us is free to make the decision whether they're comfortable buying from a racist. I agree with this. The guy's statements can't be forgiven just because he had a substance abuse problem. However--in our lives, we buy groceries and clothing and all manner of goods, and in doing so we may very well be putting money into the pockets of people whose opinions we would vehemently disagree with. The clerk at the supermarket might well be an avowed Nazi, but we pay her salary by shopping at that store. Boycotting said store would just deny other innocent employees the right to make a living. I personally would hesitate to buy from Galliano (even if I could afford his clothes) but I'm not going to judge anyone who feels otherwise. It is, as you point out, a decision that everyone has to make for themselves. Many would argue that the guy's talent has nothing to do with his political stance and that's a valid viewpoint. |

Question - How do you follow someones Twitter feed? I thought it was @person’sname but just shows a few, not the continuous stream I thought it should be well it depends on who you are following, even Adam doesn't get a continuous stream all the time. Sometimes are more active than others. Or it could be a temporary glitch in twitter sometimes they don't load although it will usually say that at the bottom of the page. |
