Keeping score…
10.16.11 by Q3
Over the past couple of weeks, Adam and his fans were confronted by the two new unauthorized Adam Lambert albums. First, there is no reason to worry about Adam’s legal and financial interests. Adam and his lawyers will certainly watch out for his legal interests. RCA will protect their huge investment in Adam’s career development. 19R will certainly watch out for their financial interest which is dependent on Adam’s earnings. DMG also gets a share of Adam’s earnings so they also have an interest in maximizing Adam's earnings.
And setting this aside, fans have no legal standing and really have no choice but leaving this to Adam and his legal advisers.
Adam has radio and media support
Adam also has built a lot of support in the radio and media communities. Now all of that hard work and the relationships Adam forged will help him. They are ready and waiting or promote his real album. But if someone in the media starts to promote these albums as “Adam Lambert Albums”, fans maybe album to help.
The Bastard Albums Monitor
I like scorecards and measurement systems. They are a good way to determine if things have sifted and if intervention is needed. So, I decided to create “The Bastard Albums Monitor” to track both BFM and PS. For the next few weeks, I plan to track these two albums and post the info on Pre-Orders/Sales, News and Online Buzz here once a week. If there is a dramatic upswing that requires action, we have an objective way to know about it.
Here is this week’s scorecard on a scale of 0 to 9 where 9 is that best rating.

Rising to the Challenge: Beyond the Comfort Zone
10/16/2011 by NoAngel
Adam has said that he is here to entertain, and I believe him. But I also believe that he is more than a mere entertainer, and is here to do more. There are singers who want celebrity and fast fame; there is nothing wrong with that. In the quest for 15 minutes of fame, many people emblazon their mark onto the sky only to fade with the light of a new day. I believe that Adam wants something more substantial, and is willing to do what it takes to make a lasting impression. His challenge is to keep pushing us, and our challenge as fans is to keep up with him. We may not always feel comfortable, but I think it is our work as fans to figure out what we are feeling and why.
If Adam wanted to take the easy road, he would have done more Mad World and less Ring of Fire on Idol. He wouldn't have pushed for the unabashedly sexy FYE as his first radio single. He would have changed "he" to "she" or "you" on Fever. He would have gone with less eyeliner, more coloring within the lines; less honesty, more ambiguity. If we had wanted to take the easy road, we would have stanned "the other guy."
Art at its heart is an expression of self: Realness. Inherently it is not intended to offend but rather to invite. You can reject the invitation, you can be offended, but that is YOUR choice. Adam asks you to come in, come along, come inside—if you dare. For some, it's too much. And for Adam, that's okay. He's not in this for mass appeal. He is seeking kindred spirits—some who are already where he is and some who are willing to be led there.
So the next time you have a reaction to something Adam does, take a moment to think about it. What does it mean? How you are feeling? Are you uncomfortable, and if so, why?
If it's a photo, does Adam's look make you uncomfortable? Is he wearing "too much" makeup? Is he "too femme" or "too conservative"? It's easy to say that you like a "more natural look" but what is behind that sentiment? If you say you like "OTT Adam," what do you feel when he wears no makeup and a lot of plaid? If he's all up in some girl's business (à la Ke$ha), do you like it or not? How did you really feel about the Details photoshoot? If he's all up in some dude's business, do you like it or not? What if it's not his boyfriend? Do you worry when Adam is posing ~seductively with a man who isn't Sauli? Why? If you wish he wouldn't, is it because you imagine that Adam might be unfaithful? Or that his relationship isn't solid? Or that his partner might not like it? Really think about it—are you putting yourself into the position of the "other"—are you identifying with Sauli? Is the discomfort you feel the discomfort you would feel if your OWN significant other were doing [insert whatever Adam is doing] with someone else? Think of the pics of Adam that you love best. What are they and what is the common theme? Is he completely over-the-top, in-your-face glitz-and-glam? Is he more dialed-back and toned down? If the former, why do you love that look—because it represents a big FU to "pearl-clutchers" or because he represents the wild side of yourself that you may or may not exhibit? If the latter—do you like it because you feel that if only Adam was more "accessible" to people, he'd be way bigger than he is now? Do you think he should work harder at being more accessible? What if he did—would you feel as though it was the right price to pay for bigger fame, or that he had sold out?
When watching an interview, has something Adam said ever made you cringe? Why? Was it something not quite PC? Was he being too real and not quite nice enough? Did he not sound as clever as you'd like? If you are a fan of articulate!Adam how did you feel when he was relatively subdued on the Grammy social media panel? If you are a fan of sweet!Adam how did you feel when he dissed SuBo's album?
If it's Adam's music and you aren't feeling positive about it—why? Not your preferred genre? Are the lyrics too (fill-in-the-blank: risqué? simplistic? silly? serious?) Do you value artistry or accessibility or both? If Adam never sang in your preferred genre (rock, opera, pop, polka) would you still stan him? Would you rather he have critical acclaim or popular fame?
How did you feel about the FYE album cover? About FYE the single? About WWFM the single? About any of two dozen gates? Are you okay with everything Adam does or does your stomach drop when you see him doing something that you feel may reflect badly on him? Is your first reaction to anything Adam-related to think about how others (non-stans) might react? Or do you just care about how much Adam fits into your own vision of him? How often does he disappoint you? How often does he make you proud to be his fan?
I believe that more can be learned about ourselves from our own reactions to something Adam does than about Adam. He is what he is. We know only what he reveals to us. But we ourselves—that is open to analysis. If I don't like something Adam does, it has less to do with Adam than it has to do with me—my values, my opinions, my priorities. Adam will do what he will and I have no control over that. But I can look at myself and maybe, just maybe… learn a little. An artist forces us to look within and challenges our assumptions and pushes us out of our comfort zones. An artist makes us think and makes us feel. An artist asks difficult questions. We may not always like the answers, but it is important to seek them all the same.
I started this essay by saying that I think Adam is not just an entertainer, but an artist. Reading back, I realize that this is my own bias showing through. I admire artists and I think what they do is important. Do I feel the same way about mere entertainers—hmmm, maybe not so much. I define Adam as an "artist" because that is what I respect. Maybe the lesson for me is that it doesn't matter what the title—artists, entertainers—the point is how they make you feel; how they make you think; how they challenge you.
Sometimes what is most important is not the answers someone gives us, but the questions we ask ourselves.
