Hi all - I have to post this here, since I haven't seen it yet, and its tangentially AFL-related. Today a huge court decision was handed down against Prop 8, the anti-same-sex marriage amendment in CA. It is a comprehensive, fact-based decision (making it more defensible legally), which is awesome. It's particularly important because its from a federal (not CA state) court, meaning that an appeal will likely go all the way to the Supreme Court, and impact the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) that prohibits same-sex marriage from being subject to the same federal tax, immigration, and other benefits as opposite-sex marriage. It is a big deal for many same-sex couples where one person is a foreign citizen, as with Adam and Sauli, because DOMA is a huge obstacle for ensuring that a foreigner can stay in the country to be with a partner, even if they lose their work-related visa. yay! Where did you see/hear this? Can't find it anywhere on the internet.

There is an old article from 2010 that is being passed around. blogs.laweekly.com/informer/2011/12/prop_8_overturned_california_huffington_post.phpA Huffington Post article from August 2010 (and updated in May 2011) was littered all over Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and the rest of the Internet this morning. "Prop 8 OVERTURNED: Gay Marriage Ban Struck Down In California," reads the headline. Nope.

I have done this so many times that I now have a quick sure-fire method to determine if there is any BTIKM news: - Open Adamtopia
- Only new posts are in Daily Thread
- Nothing new posted by wal under TRESSPASSING or Adam News Archives
- Dejectedly know that nothing has leaked or Adam has not tweeted
- Read new Daily Thread posts anyway because I just like you guys
You're smarter than I am. I check the daily news, see how many people are reading and how many pages (I get up late 8-) )and then "read it anyway". The number of people reading is getting bigger, so I get my hopes up and then....no yay. Also, I have Twitter alert on my phone for when Adam Tweets. Today I've received about 3 alerts for other stuff, but I can't believe how physically giddy I get when I check to see if it's THE BIG NEWS. : Good lord, I never thought I'd still be this far down the rabbit hole 2 1/2 years later and apparently lodged there permanently. ;D

I LOVE this. Wish my teachers did that. Yep! That's how we learned and I loved it. It's a fantastic social studies lesson. We would act out celebrations from around the world. We would usually do a play of La Posada, the Mexican celebration. It's common to integrate many of the foods and traditions of friends and families we grew up with. My sister and I have made tamales for years (another Mexican tradition). My best friend's family always made Menudo (a very traditional Mexican soup that most Americans don't like once they know what it's made of. I knew, but didn't care. I like it.) I remember playing the "eldest daughter," in our unit of the Swedish celebration (St. Lucia?) in third grade because I was the tallest girl in the class, so I wore the costume of the white robe and crown of candles (not real ones ... ) Hey! I guess that was my first Flaming Headdress. 8-) When I worked in Fort Lauderdale, our department would have a Christmas luncheon and it was so much fun. We had a girl from Trinidad (yum!,) one from Austria (still one of my best friends,) a few Cubans, 2 Brazilians, a Texan, a girl from Gallup, NM who was 1/2 Navajo, and a few ordinary (TX and NM aren't ordinary) Americans (Ohio, PA, MA, GA.) The food was fabulous and exotic, as were the Christmas customs. Two were agnostics, but loved the decorations and the food so were willing to put their beliefs aside to celebrate with the rest of us. I loved those days. South Florida can be a pain sometimes, too many people, too much traffic, but it the coolest melting pot ever.
