Progress is a good thing for gay artists. But no #1 songs or headlines or minor complaints will ever compare to the outrage, hysteria and media coverage that followed Adam's performance at the AMA's. He was bold before bold was allowed and celebrated. His entire career was on the line. There are still effects from it today, imo. Without his extraordinary talent and will to survive, I don't think he would have made it long enough to become the 1st out gay artist to have a #1 album on the billboard 200. That was a feat that can't be taken away from him. He will always be the 1st even when SSs management tried to change it to the 1st two when SS had a #1 album years later. lol. The AMA fallout was very scary at the time and still upsetting to me when I think of what transpired. Thankfully, no careers are threatened over a male kiss or same sex performance today. Just a celebration. Adam has a great career and has grown in stature and wealth. He is a wonderful role model, supporter and advocate for his community, especially for the younger ones. No antics are needed nor points to make. Some opened the door for him and he gladly acknowledges that. And he opened the door for many and took a lot of hits so others did not need to. Progress indeed!

Your said it just right, lurleene. Those two side-by-side photos of Adam and Lil Nas speak volumes about what has transpired in the past twelve years. Yes, others paved the way for Adam, but Adam continues the pave the way for others yet to come. Right after Idol, Adam was asked in an interview if he felt he was a role model for others. He said he was not. He didn't feel like an activist then, but he has certainly become one now.

I wish they had include Adam's #1 album. But I'll take it as he is in good company with Aretha, Prince, Freddie Mercury, Ray Charles, Ricky Martin, etc. 25 Musicians Who Broke BarriersAdam LambertIn 2009, American Idol runner-up Adam Lambert opened up about being “bi-curious” and gay. Lambert helped usher in a new era of gay acceptance simply because he was on a mainstream television show. At the time, only 37% of Americans supported same-sex marriage. www.msn.com/en-us/music/news/25-musicians-who-broke-barriers/ss-BB1d91hw?li=BBnb2gh#image=8

Queen + Adam Lambert lead vocalist Adam Lambert has recently shared both his photo from American Music Awards 2009 and Lil Nas X’s photo of kissing a man on the stage from BET Awards 2021 to celebrate Pride Month on his Instagram account. He drew attention to the change in the people’s perspectives and in their reactions to the similar performances he and Lil Nas X had.
Adam Lambert as an openly gay artist always supported the freedom of the LGBTQ+ community and he reacted the society’s discriminative perspective toward them during his iconic live performances. Lambert kissed one of his male band members during his performance at American Music Awards 2009. Following his performance, he faced a fierce backlash which nearly destroyed his career.
